Portion sizes were large and you won't be walking away with an empty belly. The choice is plentiful and the beef (even though a topside cut) was mouthwateringly tender. I had the lamb, well just come try for yourself, I left smiling :) One thing that needs a special mention; We have been to many pubs in and around London (where we live) every Sunday trying a new place for the books and I have to say (including my mother who is from Yorkshire) that the chef makes the best Yorkshire puddings we have EVER come across. They are just the right consistency, not too heavy or dough like, not too dry and crispy but just right...light and fluffy with enough spongy volume to almost classify and the perfect Yorkshire pudding. Lady's and Gentlemen, if Yorkie's are your thing - this is the place! The sweet potato fries are a great side, the cauliflower cheese was also very very good; almost crispy on top but with a cheesy creamy sauce underneath. The scotch egg is also worth a mention as this is a British classic and it is cooked to well here, highly recommended. Other things to note; bread and butter pudding was a big hit, so was the crumble. I had the millionaires cheese cake and although the most popular desert I found it to be a little rich and well, more chocolate than cheesecake. Not really a cheesecake texture but more a hardened chocolate based moose. One last thing, although there were a number of staff members we found the table service to be a little slow and needed improving... but surely this place, with these portions and those prices will be a hit everytime! Highly recommended

Great Pub! My…read moreco-workers took a bunch of us here for lunch to experience a very traditional English pub. The Royal Oak did not disappoint. Both the beer and food was terrific. My fish and chips was served on old newspaper (a nice traditional touch). The building looked very old from the outside and yet the inside was very clean. The entrance is located on the beach, and I mean literally on the beach. The water is actually a stone's throw away. I've got to imagine the tide water rises up to the front door whenever a storm surge comes into town. In the front is a nice long bar with many beers on tap. In the back are some separate rooms and the kitchen. We sat in a back room and it ended up working out great for lunch. I'd definitely return again.

Sam's Bar is a Southampton rarity, a charismatic attempt at something other than the determinedly…read moremainstream which seems to be the benchmark for this city. Sam's is an attempt at an American themed cafe bar and it lives snugly and quietly around the corner to Debenhams. Half diner, half greasy spoon it's an amazing throwback to 1950's neon Baltimore mixed with 1970's British pie house grime. It has the buzzing signs, chrome, guitars on the ceiling and a juke box replete with Neil Sedaka, Frank Sinatra, Presley and the king himself Buddy Holly. It also has an ill fitting bakery counter, chain wine bar shelving and tables and chairs straight from a working man's club. The menu is disappointingly mainstream -more greasy spoon than sloppy joe. Sam's however is a place with huge potential. Sam's is a concept that is yet to be fully realised. Given a minimal makeover, an American counter, some rounded brightly coloured diner style furnishings, a soda fountain, a short order chef and a complete menu overhaul Sam's could be a shining chromefied beacon in this town. Sam's is a bar awaiting discovery and begging for a definitive style of its own. While it is patiently waiting, go there for the jukebox and the possibilities alone.
