Many campers attend multiple sessions & I believe this is because the staff truly enjoys their work and the campers. It is such an awesome place, if only I was young again....

Working 12-hour shifts with children who require constant one-on-one care is incredibly demanding, yet staff receive very little time to rest. Most days, I only had about a 30-minute break despite the physical and emotional demands of the job. The camp is consistently understaffed, which places an enormous amount of pressure on counselors. Instead of feeling supported, I often felt completely on my own. When counselors needed assistance or guidance, there was very little support available. There also seemed to be no meaningful resources or concern for employees' mental well-being, despite the challenging nature of the work. The pay is extremely low considering the level of responsibility required. Caring for children one-on-one all day is difficult, skilled work, yet the compensation does not reflect that. It often felt like there was no ability to advocate for better working conditions or raise concerns without them being ignored. Another disappointment was that the position I accepted did not match what was described during the hiring process. Expectations and responsibilities were very different from what was advertised. I truly care about the children and hope they receive the support they deserve, but the way employees are treated made this one of the worst work experiences I've had. Better staffing, fair compensation, more support for counselors, and honest communication with prospective employees would make a significant difference. The children deserve better, and so do the employees caring for them.

We had them on our Fridge for months after and continue to follow them through the year. Watching your child begin to make friends, hang out with other kids while very well supervised is wonderful. I CAN RELAX while he is there. The counselors are kind and watch everything going on. The admin staff has been nothing short of amazing as they've listened to my concerns and concentrated on what I chose to be his focus for the session. i.e. watching that filter free mouth, learning to listen to other kids, learning to keep your own space and of course, getting out of his comfort zone and canoeing and swimming every day ! Learning how use tools in woodshop is his latest favorite !! There isn't a better site for your child - I've looked - when he/she needs that 1:1 supervision. Asperger's is hard - and this was a place for understanding. WE LOVE YOU CAMP STARFISH and looking forward to this year's session.
