This is the first review I've ever written, and it comes after many attempts to address this issue via email and phone over the past six months (which is where I'd much prefer to handle these kinds of things). After reading other reviews on Yelp, it's pretty clear this is a recurring theme, and so it seemed important to inform other people that this continues to be an issue w/ what otherwise is a very special place.
My wife and I were married there last August, and the venue itself was excellent in so many ways. Also, once we were on site the team there was very welcoming, accommodating and on-point (thanks Skip!) over the course of the weekend. Unfortunately the beautiful setting and great people on-site have been significantly soured by the poor organization and terrible communication from the business side. It was the planning, contracting and commercial elements of this that were an absolute nightmare, to say the least. Today, Camp Navarro is more than 6 months overdue in repaying us ~$5,000 that they are contractually obligated to have returned to us (prepayments, security deposits etc).
Our biggest challenge before the event was communication. We signed a contract and paid a significant deposit in January of 2015, and I will acknowledge that they were going through a bit of a management transition during that time, but even when our new point of contact (Deborah) was identified, it was clear we were not a priority for her. There were numerous instances where there were MONTHS of radio silence despite numerous attempts by email and phone to plan and coordinate. This added significant and undue stress to a wedding planning process as we were attempting to provide information to our 130 guests - and the only place we could get that information was from Camp Navarro. To give a specific example, in addition to booking the venue and accommodations we had contracted w/ Camp Navarro to provide a number of meals over the course of the weekend. In April we thought it would be a reasonable time to discuss the specific menus and requested that we have that conversation w/ Camp Navarro's caterer. We were put off as they were interviewing new caterers - which seemed reasonable. Finally, after many requests and prodding, on June 27th, we were put in touch with a caterer. We were pretty frustrated with the fact that it was so late and also with the fact that Camp Navarro did little to no prep themselves with the caterer and we had to give them a download of the event and do all the planning - if we'd known that to be the case, we would have contracted directly with a caterer ourselves and gotten that item taken care of months before. But at that point we just needed to get it done, so we followed-up with the caterer. And followed-up. And followed-up. After hearing nothing for those couple of weeks, on July 8th we received an email from Camp Navarro stating the the caterer they'd put us in touch with was not going to be able to provide service at the price point we'd agreed on w/ Camp Navarro, and that they were going to put us in touch with another, local to Mendocino, caterer to work with. We were 5 weeks out from our wedding at this point with no opportunity or time to find another caterer ourselves, and so we jumped right in with that caterer. Brief aside to note that Oui Chef did an excellent job in turning around menus and providing great food and solid service throughout the weekend (shout-out to Chef Rocco!) - BUT there was so much unnecessary stress put on us and the event in the last couple of weeks (when we had a few better things to be focused on) due to the complete lack of organization and terrible communication shown by the business/planning team at Camp Navarro (Deborah). Just one illustrative example of how frustrating and impossible this organization was before our wedding.
After the wedding, per our contract Camp Navarro had 60 days to perform final review and accounting and perform final closeout. I followed up on November 15, 2015 (60 days after our event, and also during their low season) and was told it would be completed shortly. I followed-up every month or so for the past many months and still have not received any detail or indeed any real response. Camp Navarro owes us $1000 security deposit as well as ~$4000 to refund prepayments we made as part of our deposits for accommodations that were ultimately paid by our guests directly to Camp Navarro on a website they set up for the wedding.
This can no longer be chalked up to a management transition and is squarely on poor management which includes Dan B who seems to have responded to other similar posts on here. If you decide to hold an event here, know that you're getting a lovely venue with some great people on site, but expect enormous delays, terrible communication, a bad contract that they're unwilling to adjust for different events and potentially some financial dispute. read more
