However, we came away with a LOT more information and history about these buildings. The Mission Memorial Buildings is a complex comprised of 3 separate buildings which face King Street and its closest neighboring Government building is Honolulu Hale at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center. Currently, the 3 buildings are identified as the MMB (Mission Memorial Building), MMA (Mission Memorial Auditorium ) and MRC (Municipal Reference Center). Its Neo-Classical red brick structures are the ONLY example of Jeffersonian style in Hawai'i. TIMELINE: - 1915 to 1916: Originally, these buildings were commissioned by the Hawaii Evangelical Association in preparation for the centennial commemoration of the arrival of American Protestant missionaries in 1820. This complex of buildings served as the headquarters of the Hawaii Evangelical Association, part of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, a non-profit educational institution and genealogical society whose membership is comprised of descendants of the first American Protestant missionaries to Hawaii. The HMCS is also the parent organization of MissionHouses Museum. The Mission Memorial Building (MMB) site was the previous home of the Kawaiahao Seminary and the Honolulu Mission Printing Office. - 1930: The Municipal Reference Center was established as part of this complex where it houses publications issued by and for the City and County agencies. - 1944: The City & County of Honolulu procured these buildings in an effort to ease the congestion of offices in City Hall (Honolulu Hale). Agency offices were located here for decades. - 2003: The City decided to renovate the auditorium from office spaces to its original state. The auditorium is currently used for City and County of Honolulu departmental activities, local, non-profit organizations can also use it, especially for cultural and arts events. All events must be free and open to the public. - 2010: The Mission Memorial Building (MMB) was renovated and houses the Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts, the Neighborhood Commission Office, and the Information and Complaints branches. The Department of Customer Services' Public Information Center is also located inside the building near the entrance. Okay, so it may seem to be "boring" to visit these agencies but I find it fascinating to discover and learn about the history of my home State of Hawai'i. Go out and see what you will discover today or tomorrow.

Other than that, it's a little more peaceful and laid back than the hustle and bustle and crowd on Schofield. There is a pre-school called Armed Services YMCA that you could put your child in, a community pool for Island Palm residents, a car selling lot, a small and quaint bowling alley, and a small PX. I believe the Navy housing is farther back behind Wiliwili. The park is well kept. I'd recommend this area of you're ever stationed here and there is an opening.

I Remember when we first got stationed here my husband said to me Wheeler army airfield? Isn't that the first place to get hit before Pearl Harbor? Yes, yes it was. There's interesting historical signs about it On the main road by the big gray building and others in the pink Amelia Airhart hanger on the airfield. Many of the homes and hangers that got hit still have the bullet holes in them as historical landmarks. So we live here with respect and humility from the past & excitement about the future. This base is small but friendly & traffic isn't as bad as Schofield in my opinion. AVOID crossing between bases if you can in the morning. It will add an hour to your day. Wheeler has a wonderful new small bowling alley (only 4 lanes) with yummy food beer & free pool Thursday & Friday. Unfortunately due to sequestration they are not able to be open on other days At this time. It was built for the barracks next-door but tends to attract more of an older and family crowd. There are nondenominational Christian worship services at Wheeler Chapel 11 am Sunday's with Potlucks every first Sunday. Pagans meet in the church 1 Friday/mth although I hear it's basically a bunch of young gaming kids and probably not super religious. The Community Center behind the chapel has a pool, Small fitness center, and small movie theater you can reserve for parties. There are several great playgrounds all over the base. There is A barbershop, a bank, a delicious DFAC, shoppette, and a gym in and around the big gray building. The only gas station is on Schofield. All of the housing is pretty awesome in my opinion including the older historical WWII housing (except for poor Camp Stover in the back.) Make sure to make your way over to Schofield on the weekends for the KoleKole (sp?) Pass Hike. It's open to the public usually too. It's only .8 mi one way & doable with small kids & the views are phenomenal. I'm going to leave here with such fond memories! And those Mountain View's?! Breathtaking!! Historically Hawaiian Warriors trained on this plateau also (as they still do as part of the Hawaii National Guard.) Don't miss out on learning about the local Hawaiian history while you're here. I recommend the Shakka app if you're driving around the area. And while you're at it, stop at Zippy's and get some local food and donuts, it's kind of like a Hawaiian Denny's. Dole is only 2 Miles up the road for visiting family & tourists. We also make a great 'Gateway to the North Shore .'Last, all the helicopter & air traffic doesn't bother my family & we can't hear much in our house. Aloha Towers is a historic lighthouse that stands near Pier 9 on the Honolulu Harbor. The structure…read morewas designed by Arthur Reynolds and construction was completed in 1926. The style of this unusual lighthouse is Gothic Revival with a strong Art Deco influence. This iconic structure once housed the harbor navigation master, responsible for directing ships into and out of the Harbor. A massive Howard clock tells accurate time on the lighthouse. I took an early morning walk around the lighthouse with my daughter. The structure appears to be undergoing some rehab as the entrance was boarded up. A large plaque tells the building's history with several interesting photos. In the past, visitors could ascend to a 10th floor observation deck and view the harbor. Today, the building is closed to visitors, but is a central focal point of the Marketplace. The Marketplace houses restaurants and shops which were not open during my visit. The lighthouse was a fun discovery for me, but would have been more impactful if the observation deck was still open to visitors. We found parking about two blacks away in a metered lot. There is no charge to walk around the base of the tower.

At 99 and going close to 100 years old it's still shows proudly the Aloha Spirit going strong as to this day mom remembers vividly seeing this tower greet her as she arrived with dad to Hawai'i and to this day is one of the prominent structure easily viewed in many directions though in the past the observation deck gave you the stunning views the Oahu shoreline provides it now is closed and is just majestically stands there to welcome all with Aloha. You can find the tower easily right besides some shops and currently Old Spaghetti Factory and even Aloha Tower Luau "Ka Moana Luau" which offers a buffet dinner provided by Chart House along with a beautiful undisturbed view of the waterfront and evening sunset. Was invited to the annual luncheon as a guest at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and was very…read moredisappointed with the organization of the event. It was bad enough that there was a lot of construction and congestion at the HHV because of the chosen time and day (Friday lunchtime) and all the tourists. Then it went downhill from there. Here are some of the lowlights: - no signs setup for finding your way in parking, - no signs along the concourse to find your walking route to the Tapa Tower ballroom, - no guide hosts (like Douglas Trade Shows always has at their events), - you register, and they don't give you a name tag (until people ask you where your name tag is, and then you have to go back to the registration desk and ask for it, while they flip thru pages of lists trying to find you, and then point you to someone else at another table, and then they send you back to the other table you were at). - when the luncheon starts, and there is like 100 tables, and you try and sit down and then people tell you that it is assigned tables, and you have to go back to the registration desk, and then they give you a card with your table number on it. All they had to do was print your table number on your name tag, or give you the table card when you first showed up, instead of going back to the registration desk line 3 different times?! - Food was horrible, Hawaiian food that wasn't really... Hard lumpy white rice. Served in microwaved ceramic bowls too hot to hold, and the server doesn't say anything and just puts it down on the lazy susan and leaves. But I guess that is more the HHV hotel's issue?! So I'll review that on their page. - parking for just a few hours is $24! I thought downtown was bad. - Later in the day I found out that the registration desk had parking validation. Nobody said anything or asked me if I needed validation but then again, I never got my name tag and pretty much everything else. Who knows what else I'm missing? - Blaring music during the President's talk, I swear that it was a mistake, but then it kept playing, and they kept doing it for other awards, so I guess that is how they do it. They should have faded in and out to be more professional, and so we can hear what the people on the stage are saying. - To top it all off, after paying 1/4th of a century bill for parking, the departure traffic jam in the structure, just to leave, was over 25 minutes of exhaust fumes, and wasted time and gas. But again, that is the hotel, so I will review that there. Highlight: The only good part, was the networking, but that happens at any event, anywhere. Probably gave out 20 business cards. We'll see if any of that pans out. I even called and left voicemail, and even emailed them at their cochawaii.org web site to try and give them feedback, no response so far. They need to hire someone really good, like Douglas Trade Shows, who knows how to organize and put on a event. I have been impressed by their events 100% so far. Reminds me of all the conventions and shows I attend in Vegas, San Jose, San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia, New York. Very professional.

Thank goodness I was with a group when I first visited the Kaniakapupu Ruins. We were feeling a little adventurous so headed to the ruins from the Lulumalu hike parking area. We ventured off into the thick thick bamboo forest. The route we took initially had a path to follow then it eventually disappears. When we got there, the site was well worth the journey of getting lost. The ruins are breathtaking in its own way. This was once the summer palace for royalty so when you visit appreciate the beauty, respect this historic site, and don't take anything from the site. Kaniakapupu Ruins is one of Oahu's best kept secrets and should be enjoyed by all.

At this point I'm pondering whether or not I should post directions...so if you can make it to here based on my directions, kudos to you! If not, it just wasn't meant to be. Nestled discreetly in the heart of Nu'uanu Valley lies Kaniakapupu Ruins. Through the bamboo forest and amidst the shady, grown trees sits what used to be the summer home of King Kamehameha III. What remains is a couple of walls, a stone walkway and an outdoor kitchen. This place is considered sacred for many Hawaiians. Even if you are a non-believer in spirits and such, you would be wowed by the presence of something spiritually powerful and present there. Allow yourself to quiet your soul a bit and you will feel what many believe to be a strong "mana," or spiritual energy. I walked around the ruins and gasped at the thought of having 10,000 people gather at this place many, many years ago and I felt a strong energy around me, untouchable and unseen but nonetheless harmless and powerful. I got goosebumps (or as locals say, "chicken skin") all up and down my back, neck and arms. The peacefulness and serenity of the surrounding forest lends to the magical feeling I felt. There are many directions of how to arrive at the Ruins, however the most accurate one was that from fellow yelper Eric Robert R. - Get on Pali Hwy - Get on Old Pali Road - Look for a small looking type water plant/bldg. **Now the difficult part - the opening to the trail is opposite the water bldg; discreet and well hidden to the passerby. It's an opening in the bamboo forest - refer to the pictures on YELP if needed. If you stay on the (main/obvious) trail - you will hit a waterfall and stream. The trail does not have an obvious fork in the road, however if you veer onto the trail on the left you will see a worn path, stay on that path and trek a short 10 minutes. The forest opens up and therein lies the enchanted Kaniakapupu Ruins. This is more of a "nature walk" rather than a hike. Expect it to be really muddy and "sticky" after the rains and always apply mosquito repellent prior, as the mosquitos here are quite hungry. As with any local historical site, DO NOT disturb the building, rocks and plants here. It truly is a beauty and the historical value is priceless. There is something very special about this summer home that words alone cannot describe. This walk is perfect for children and for the novice hiker or nature enthusiast. I'm told that large groups are discouraged from coming here however, upon exiting the trail we did see a small tour bus full of tourist congregating to commence the walk. I don't know about you but I'm a little selfish when it comes to things like sharing "treasures" with the general tourist population aka large groups only because you cannot assure that the "treasure" will not be destroyed. I'd venture to say that it'll be just a matter of time before attempts to preserve this gem on a larger scale is realized.
