The cake shop in Liverpool Central Station is brilliant, there's a huge variety of cakes for all…read moresorts of different celebrations. I popped in after getting off the train as I thought I'd have a look for ideas for my wedding, as I don't fancy the plain white tiered fruit cake There are hundreds of photos of all the cakes they have made, actual cakes on display and staff who are willing to chat about your requirements. A couple of the cakes that stuck in my mind were a top table at a wedding with little figures of all the guests, and another was the tiered fairy cakes. The prices are quite steep but the quality is really good, and worth the extra few quid. Also, delivery is available throughout the whole of the UK so don't worry if you're visiting Liverpool and find your perfect cake, but your wedding is down South.

There is seemingly no limit to what shape you can sculpt sponge and icing into, from a football team to your favourite pet or even electrical device. The very centrepiece to your celebration , a cake is the very creative focal point to almost any party so why not go and see what you fancy. I am a real nut for, nuts so they would have to play a big part in any cake-related equations. My nut addiction extends to the covering with a thick layer of moist marzipan an absolute must. And it would be in the shape of the Death Star. It would probably be the most expensive cake in the shop but you have but one birthday/anniversary/Christmas a year. Sadly there is a premium to be paid for such extensive choice and individuality and just a glance through the window here will reveal that although detailed and handsome the cakes are hardly cheap. One in the shape of an iphone (?!) was going to cost almost £100 - do you have any idea how many French Fancies you could get for that!

I'd only ever heard about Fancie and was desperate to try their delectable selection of cupcakes…read more So when mum and I went over to Meadowhall, we ended up leaving with five cupcakes from Fancie (amongst other things!) As it was a Monday, it was quite quiet and we were left alone to browse the selection on offer - of which there was a lot. We were told what the specials were for the day, then set about deciding on what we'd be taking home. We ended up with chocolate for dad, mint chocolate for the boyfriend, cappuccino for mum and red velvet for me. I also bought an extra one - praline. Everything was packaged up nicely by the friendly girls that were working and we went on our way with a bag full of sugary goodness. I can't say too much for what the others thought of theirs, other than the phrase 'om nom nom' was used multiple times! My praline cupcake was the richest, most delicious thing I've eaten. As well as chopped hazelnuts in the centre of the frosting, the frosting itself is chocolate and hazelnut. It was so rich I had to take two breaks to get through the entire thing! The red velvet was beautifully moist and had a very thick layer of frosting on top, drizzled with dark chocolate. It tasted gorgeous. So now that I've had my Fancie experience, will I go back for more? Hell yes. Except next time I'll end up with a box of four for me and a box of four for the boyfriend. Definitely give this place a visit if you're ever in Meadowhall!

I haven't been to the café (but want to visit), so I am just rating the cupcakes. I have managed…read moreto catch them at the Farmers' Market in York and every time I have stopped for a cupcake... or a box of 4. I highly recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding Cupcake. While it isn't swimming in toffee sauce, it is delicious and the toffee sponge base is moist and rich (actually it doesn't need the toffee sauce!). I did just try the Carrot Cupcake and it was so moist... and the best part... it has walnuts in it and no raisins! Sorry, not a fan of raisins in carrot cake (or any cakes for that matter). I do have a Red Velvet Cupcake still in the box, waiting to be devoured, so I will have to update after... UPDATE: I had the Red Velvet Cupcake, it was delicious, but not like Red Velvet as I know it. The cupcake itself could've been more red, but the one thing it was really lacking was chocolate. Red Velvet is a tough one to get right, so kudos to them for trying, but it did need more cocoa and the frosting could've had a bit of cream cheese to it as that is the traditional frosting for Red Velvet. If you are going to treat yourself, get one of these cupcakes. You won't be disappointed.

This very small operation makes little works of art that taste as great as they look. The coffee, tea and lattes are also very good. Now that I know about Cupcakes By Charley I will never venture back to Betty's!
