He then started to patronise me. I replied but then moved on. He responded again after a few days, after he must have checked out my blog and experience. Everything is baked in house at Cuthberts Bakehouse and they have cute teacups and saucers, which we knew his grandparents would appreciate -- a saucer is mandatory with their teacup! We were seated in the back conservatory which was really cute. It's got a glass roof and was nicely furnished with succulent planters and even a Christmas tree for the holidays. We ordered 3 Classic Afternoon Teas, 1 New York Afternoon Tea and 1 Vegetarian Afternoon Tea for the 5 of us (my husband's mom joined us as well). The portions here are pretty big, but its weighted toward the desserts. Each afternoon tea comes with a scone on top, the middle layer has freshly baked treats, and the bottom layer is savory bites. As a group we sampled from all of the afternoon teas. I liked the burger in the New York Afternoon Tea a lot and the fries which came in both the Veggie NY and NY tea. I prefer savory bites, so those were great. For the desserts, I liked the chocolate covered strawberry and the fudge bite. My grandpa-in-law loved the almond cake and my grandma-in-law loved the Victoria sponge cake. I have some dietary requirements as the moment, so there was several things I couldn't eat unfortunately, but everything did look good, but I couldn't try that many items ultimately. I guess I'll have to return! My favorite part of the afternoon tea experience was the unlimited teas, coffees and hot chocolates! How cool! I tried several loose leaf teas including the Chai, Peppermint, Berry (which was my favorite), and the Jasmine. I also tried the Dark Hot Chocolate. This was really fun and I loved trying my way through the menu!

As it was a Monday, it was quite quiet and we were left alone to browse the selection on offer - of which there was a lot. We were told what the specials were for the day, then set about deciding on what we'd be taking home. We ended up with chocolate for dad, mint chocolate for the boyfriend, cappuccino for mum and red velvet for me. I also bought an extra one - praline. Everything was packaged up nicely by the friendly girls that were working and we went on our way with a bag full of sugary goodness. I can't say too much for what the others thought of theirs, other than the phrase 'om nom nom' was used multiple times! My praline cupcake was the richest, most delicious thing I've eaten. As well as chopped hazelnuts in the centre of the frosting, the frosting itself is chocolate and hazelnut. It was so rich I had to take two breaks to get through the entire thing! The red velvet was beautifully moist and had a very thick layer of frosting on top, drizzled with dark chocolate. It tasted gorgeous. So now that I've had my Fancie experience, will I go back for more? Hell yes. Except next time I'll end up with a box of four for me and a box of four for the boyfriend. Definitely give this place a visit if you're ever in Meadowhall!

I have managed…read moreto catch them at the Farmers' Market in York and every time I have stopped for a cupcake... or a box of 4. I highly recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding Cupcake. While it isn't swimming in toffee sauce, it is delicious and the toffee sponge base is moist and rich (actually it doesn't need the toffee sauce!). I did just try the Carrot Cupcake and it was so moist... and the best part... it has walnuts in it and no raisins! Sorry, not a fan of raisins in carrot cake (or any cakes for that matter). I do have a Red Velvet Cupcake still in the box, waiting to be devoured, so I will have to update after... UPDATE: I had the Red Velvet Cupcake, it was delicious, but not like Red Velvet as I know it. The cupcake itself could've been more red, but the one thing it was really lacking was chocolate. Red Velvet is a tough one to get right, so kudos to them for trying, but it did need more cocoa and the frosting could've had a bit of cream cheese to it as that is the traditional frosting for Red Velvet. If you are going to treat yourself, get one of these cupcakes. You won't be disappointed.

The cafe is cosy with a bench of seats in the window and several tables and chairs alongside this. The friendly service we received really made us feel like we'd want to visit again, the guy at the counter was really pleased we'd discovered them online and made the effort to visit.
