I'm not really sure if we went the long way or there was a shorter way. At one point we went a way we thought might cut thru but it didn't seem any shorter. I'd come back here, it was nice. Plus it wasn't in the constant sun so that was nice too.

We have lived nearby to this lovely park for the past 3 decades. Somewhere in the middle of that…read moretime they banned dogs, and then years later they unbanned them. Now dogs and humans circle this lake in perfect harmony, as far as I have seen. The pond feeds the canal just across Merrick Road, and the spillway always makes for a dramatic photo. There is a gazebo and scattered park benches, but otherwise no facilities. The pond is a treat for the eye, especially during the height of fall. On the north end trail, you often see places where enthusiasts built fairy dwellings next to trees. Then, periodically, the park people come by and clean house. The section along the Wantagh Parkway is the scene of several tragedies, and the park patrols seem more tolerant of roadside memorials than they are of fairy houses. You can make the entire circle in about 25 minutes, and it is always worth the trouble.

The birds and ducks are always cute so that is one plus. There is supposed to be a walking trail, but I tried walking it a couple of times to find it quite short and not much of a trail. There is a playground as well, but I have no experience with that part of the pond. And if you sit at the benches near the parking lot, chances you'll catch second hand cigarette smoke from the old guys who sit in their cars all day most days.

I would like to go back again to run on the massapequa park part of the trail. The first time I went I was still with my ex-husband and we went to spend time with mutual friends and we took both our sons into the massapequa preserve. During that time I think we went into the more woodsy part of the preserve. The bike path is 6 miles (3 miles one way, 3 miles back). When I took my hike on it I was dissapointed because when I hike I don't appreciate paved trails I'd rather feel more woods and roots under my hiking shoes. But to bike on this trail or run on this trail with road running shoes the pavement is pretty nice. There's still sections where you can get lost in nature which is always a favorite part of a trail run or hike for me.

There were information boards and signs along the trail to provide additional information about the area. The beach was relatively clean (maybe because it is now fall and not that many people go there). Great view of the North Atlantic Ocean. The overlook deck and stairs were well maintained. The trail to access the beach was less than 1 mile and it was not a loop. There were plenty of parking spots at the parking lot, however, a $4 parking fee per passenger car was charged (pay at the kiosks using cash or credit card). Overall it was a great experience and easy hike for my kids.

Visit Date: February 20, 2021…read more So I had two adventures in one day, one by myself hiking here and one taking my son to bridgehampton later in the afternoon. I didn't park on Fort Salonga Road to get in, google maps always takes me a different way so I entered the trail from Makamah Road. The hike I took was a little over a 2 mile loop and I did it in snow because I will hike in snow even though it's a little rough. I had a great time looking at all the nature and actually taking time to think about stuff in life and realize what I want, what I don't want, what's in my life that could give me what I'm looking for, what I have to do to go get what I'm looking for. I might come back here with someone I'm currently flowing with if it still keeps up or again by myself or with my son when he's older and can handle a longer hike.

They now had laid turf on the playground replacing the old wood chips and sand that used to be there with the old playground. The playground set has four slides, plenty of climbing areas on and off the set, a balancing walk area and sensory play as well. There are four swings-two bucket seats and two regular seats. I like that it's very clean, well lit and in a quiet neighborhood area away from the busy roads. I know some locals also run through the park which now with the water bottle filling station makes it a convenient stop to rest with some benches. There is also an open field in the back for kids or adults to play ball or picnicking. There is a hill to get down into the park, so it is wheelchair accessible and those parents with strollers or wagons can easily get around. Parking is only street parking and I've never had to walk far to get into the park. I would highly recommend this park.
