Nature had delicately coated…read morethe mansion and grounds with snow that created a sparkle like diamonds dancing in a grand ballroom. My curiosity and excitement to be inside this enchanted mansion turned to delight and grandeur when I crossed the threshold. Our Host and Innkeeper, Tom Boycks, greeted us with his charming smile and genuine welcome. At that moment I knew that I had entered a very special place, because I no longer felt like a weary traveler, but was transformed into a royal that has just arrived at the grand ball. Tom guided us through the breathtaking lower level, describing each room and sharing stories that furthered solidified that the Fargo Mansion was the grandest of mansions. We continued our tour to the second floor where the five beautiful and thoughtfully designed guest rooms were located. Each room has its own luxurious, marble bathroom with bathrobes and toiletries. Furniture and decor placement made each room appear grand and spacious. The room that we were staying in had a lovely sitting area that I found myself drawn to. The spot was so relaxing that I just sat there listening to the classical music that flowed through the air. My quiet meditation was ended when my daughter asked what I was doing. She was in shock that I could just be sitting there doing nothing (not even looking at my phone). Tom had provided us recommendations for our evening meal, which was much appreciated since we were not familiar with Lake Mills, WI. The evening wrapped up with relaxing bliss as we snuggled under the cozy bedding and enjoyed watching our favorite shows on the flat screen in our room. When I woke to the sound of my alarm I was greeted with delicate streams of sunlight shining through the lace curtains. My usual morning stumble to the bathroom was more like a waltz, I knew that the day was going to be amazing. I enjoyed an energizing shower (the water pressure and temperature was perfect). Now invigorated and dressed, I walked down the grand staircase to the glittering dining room where Tom greeted us with a warm "Good morning." The dining table was set for royalty and the breakfast that graced the plates was delicious. I was saddened to take the last bite and drink the last sip of my cranberry juice, because I knew that my visit was about to end. With my bags in the car and sadness in my heart, I said good-bye to Tom. A hug and a see you soon, sealed the deal... I would be back and soon. I pulled out of the drive with a smile on my face, because my reservation was made for my next visit. If you are looking for a life-changing place to visit then you must make your reservations for the Fargo Mansion in Lake Mills, WI. You will be so glad that you did.

I'm hoping that there can be more reviews than just once a year! We stayed at the Sweet Autumn Inn…read morelast night (October 11, 2012). We were only going to be in the area for one night, and I wanted to stay in a Bed & Breakfast instead of a cheap motel. We don't go away much, so I wanted to pamper ourselves a bit. I found the Sweet Autumn Inn on the web and thought it looked perfect. I was right! The house is just lovely inside and out. There are many options for entertainment on the first floor: TV with videos and DVDs, games, books, and lots of neat antiques to look at! If it had been warmer, we could have visited the pond out back or sat on the front porch. We stayed in the Everson room, and it was very comfortable. We checked in and rested a bit before going to the Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson to see "Hello Dolly" (If you can go to the Fireside GO - I'm probably going to write a review of that, too). We took the many throw pillows off of the bed and put them on the chair or bench. When we came back, Teri had come in and whisked them away, left us a plate of cookies, and turned the light on for us. There was also a pitcher of filtered water next to the cookies. The one thing I will say is that the feather comforter got to be a bit much during the night. There's one of those velour-type blankets as well, and we ended up taking the comforter off the bed after a while. That'll be nice and cozy in the winter. The bed was comfortable, and we both slept reasonably well (neither of us sleeps that well away from home, and I don't sleep well in general, but we both were happy with this bed). Oh - speaking of winter, there's a working fireplace, too! Last year's review said that the bathroom was basic and "didn't really match the character of the rest of the room". Well, that suits me just fine. The one great thing about modern times is modern plumbing. Many B&Bs don't have private bathrooms (which I'm not all that fond of - it's just weird, and what do you do when you have to pee and some stranger is in the bathroom? Ack!), but this one does, and I'm very grateful. Ever stay in a hotel or B&B where the shower was just a trickle and not the right temperature? Not at Sweet Autumn! The shower was perfect, and there were plenty of towels and other amenities (Q-tips and the like). I'll take a great shower over a claw-foot tub any day. Breakfast. Ahh, breakfast. Although the rest of the stay was nice, it was breakfast that drove me to write this review. For starters there were pumpkin scones. I've never really liked scones - they're always so dry. Teri's scones were MOIST and full of flavor! She had little bowls of butter for each of us, and that just made them taste even better. There were two for each of us, but we refrained from being little piggies and eating them all. She has a large array of tasty teas, and we each had a glass of ice water and orange juice (or we could have had cranberry pomegranate). After the scones, she brought out a plate with an orange slice, a small bunch of grapes, and a bowl of oatmeal. I've never had oatmeal like this before. My husband said there was some wild rice in there, but that can't be right. There were blueberries, other fruits, nuts? I don't know - there were so many things in there and topped with a tasty yogurt/creamy thing. She told us, but I was enjoying it too much to remember everything. AND! If that's not enough... large slices of candied bacon. Needless to say, we stuffed ourselves. She let us take the scones home, and I'm looking forward to eating them tomorrow for breakfast. This has gotten long - sorry about that. We just really enjoyed ourselves, and Teri is so nice and took such good care of us. If you're on the fence at all about staying here... candied bacon and moist scones. Just go - you won't be disappointed.

I was looking for a place to spend the night in Lake Mills and the choices seemed pretty limited…read more Luckily I found Sweet Autumn Inn. My stay was for a single night in July 2011. I booked The Everson Room. The house is easy to find as it is right on the main road south of town. It was set far enough back though, so traffic noise was not a problem. Guest parking is in the rear of the house. The guest entrance is in the front. So you get to go for a short walk to get from one to the other. After ringing the doorbell, we were met at the front door by Terri, the innkeeper. She cheerfully got us checked in and gave a quick tour of the house. The house smelled of baking cookies. Sweet Autumn Inn is much smaller than some of the bed and breakfasts that I have stayed at, but let's just call it cozy. It felt very intimate, like I was visiting my mother's house. There are only 3 guest rooms, so it is not like the place was crawling with people. During my stay I only saw one other couple and that was at breakfast. The Everson room was lovely. It was tastefully decorated with just enough old fashioned charm to make you feel comfortable without feeling like you were in an old antique store. There was enough room to move around, but not a lot. The attached bathroom was clean, but basic. It didn't really match the character of the rest of the room. The bed was very comfortable and I slept wonderfully. The room came with its own window unit A/C and a ceiling fan so I was able to get the temperature to be just what I wanted. There was not a TV in the room. This was not a big deal to me, but some people need one. (There was a TV downstairs in a common room.) I didn't spend a lot of time in the house because we had plans to visit Tyranena Brewing. It turns out that when Terri is not running her wonderful B&B, she works part-time for Tyranena. She was very enthusiastic about the beer and gave us some tips before we headed out. Breakfast was served promptly at 9AM in the dining room. Terri had asked us the day before if we had any dietary restrictions or special requests. Since we are not picky eaters, we assured her that we would love whatever she served. Breakfast was delicious. There was a selection of juices and coffee. We started with some fresh berries and a dollop of honey yogurt. Then a hazelnut pastry, before jumping into the main course which was some kind of multilayer baked version of french toast with bits of ham in it. We ended our stay by chatting with Terri about beer, the house and Lake Mills in general. She was a very engaging host, which always makes a B&B stay even better. Overall, I would definitely recommend Sweet Autumn Inn and I know where I will be staying the next time I am in Lake Mills.

We checked in around 3:30 in the afternoon and met our host and hostess who were very nice and gave us a brief tour of the second floor rooms before we got settled. We stayed in the Egyptian room, which has a small bathroom (sink and toilet) as well as an in-room jacuzzi and a small sitting area. Since it was cold during our stay, we didn't use our balcony, but did use the small heater which they keep in the room to help warm up the room. The bed was comfortable, and in the morning the breakfast was very good--Trader Joe's yogurt, pastries, fresh pineapple, orange juice, tea, coffee, eggs, and sausage--served at a cozy table in a breakfast nook accompanied by pleasant conversation with our host and hostess. Considerations: * Watch yourself if there has been snow recently when you visit in winter. The parking area was a bit slippery, and since it isn't perfectly level, you can slide if you aren't careful. * If you have cat allergies, understand that they do have some friendly indoor cats. (My husband is allergic, but our room was extremely clean and he had almost no problem while at the castle.) * If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs. My husband could hear the cats prowling, pouncing, and meowing above us at night, making it difficult for him to sleep soundly. (I had earplugs, so I slept through any sounds entirely.) * There is no Wi-Fi, and there are no TV in the rooms, although there is one available in a common area. Overall impression was good and we were glad we stayed there this year. If you like solitude and quiet, it's a great choice for a unique country getaway for a night or two.

Cameo Rose Bed and Breakfast A Hidden…read moreGem Inside a Rushed and Busy World If you're searching for peace and quiet, five-star customer service, a clean and very healthy environment featuring the best breakfasts you'll ever enjoy then the Cameo Rose is for you. Cameo Rose is one of those B&B's just off the beaten track just outside of Madison, Wisconsin you should enjoy at least once in your life. With the Victorian Architecture, spot-on accommodations surrounded by 120 acres of rolling hills, and my wife's favorite Fireflies lighting up the early evening you'll ask yourself, "Is this Heaven? Nope, it's the Cameo Rose." Yes, I stole that line from the movie Field of Dreams, but it's still true. Over the past 30+ years, Dawn and Gary Bahr have created a magically delicious home that welcomes you from the moment you arrive. You can feel the stress leave your body as you drive up and meet Dawn. I say delicious because you'll be in the presence of a true culinary chef. Her talents and creativity in the kitchen are truly top-shelf. Just between you and me, Dawn doesn't know how good she is. From the tasty layers in her quiche to her handmade scones, her Eggs benedict, and desserts that can make a grown man cry. Every breakfast is created with the freshest ingredients that combine to become gifts for your pallet. My favorite part of the morning is her description of each ingredient of the meal and what detailed joy goes into each expression of her talents. On a personal note, Dawn knows I'm diabetic and changed my meals which became a diabetes-friendly experience. This just does not happen in most places, and I've traveled extensively. Each morning sitting on the large front porch drinking a coffee listening to the menagerie of birds singing their morning songs or at night with a glass of wine I realized these moments are the best and most wonderful ways to start and finish your days at the Cameo Rose. Thank you Dawn and Gary, Rick and Julie, Seattle PS: There are two beautiful cranes that wander the property. We named the Libby and Delbert. Please say hello for us.
