My husband recently surprised me with a getaway weekend in Madison, Wisconsin and a two-night stay at the beautiful Speckled Hen Inn. Heather and Tom are wonderful hosts. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Heather who explained the property's amenities, as well as reviewing a substantial menu with food and beverage choices for the breakfast the next morning. We stayed in the spacious Heywood Hardy Suite with a comfortable king size bed, large ensuite bathroom, a separate sitting room and a deck. The bed was very comfortable and the room was spotless. Heather and Tom serve breakfast to all of their guests at a specific time. Everything is fresh and made to order from your menu choices. Guests are seated at tables of four, and it was delightful getting to know there others staying at the inn. The property is beautiful and there is a field with a horse, sheep and other animals. Heather and Tom make you feel right at home. They're friendly, and love to talk, but they're not intrusive. We enjoyed our relaxing stay at the Red Speckled Inn. I highly recommend it. read more

We stayed at the Speckled Hen Inn 4 nights in December 2025. It was delightful! The facility was clean, warm, quiet, and welcoming. The bedroom was even more so; the bathroom was spacious and brilliantly clean. Although within the Madison area, we experienced it as pure country. The food was delicious, healthful, varied, and allowed for substantial choice on the part of each guest. There is a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker for the use of guests. The other guests were interesting. Most importantly, the hosts are people we would be honored to call friends - thoughtful, kind, reasonable, smart, anticipated guest needs, good to talk with, easily went about their own lives when we needed downtime. We have stayed at the Speckled Hen Inn quite a few times over the years and I must say this was the most memorable! We celebrated our anniversary over the long Labor Day weekend and enjoyed every minute. Heather and Tom are fabulous hosts and truly want to do whatever they can to make you feel comfortable and welcome. We stayed in the Heywood Hardy room. Bed was super comfy, private balcony was our own private sanctuary, and we had a separate sitting room with TV and plenty of room to spread out. There is a fireplace in the room but a little too warm to enjoy that on this trip. Bathroom is spacious and has a seat in the shower and a separate jacuzzi tub. Breakfasts are so hearty and satisfying as you can pick your courses that suit your appetite and dietary restrictions. Ingredients are sourced from the property or locally. It Is very much farm to table. Fresh, fresh, fresh! With all the country air we slept like rocks and awoke refreshed. We spent one entire day in by enjoying our balcony, reading, napping, TV watching, and had pizza delivered by Glass Nickel Pizza which was delicious for dinner. Refrigerator available for leftovers or purchases requiring refrigeration. Lots of seating areas both inside and outside overlooking the pasture. There is so much to do in the area with Madison so close, the lakes, and close distance to Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo, and Spring Green. So much to do within quick driving distance. You can't go wrong with a stay at the Speckled Hen Inn. You will leave refreshed, calm, and grateful. read more

My spouse, Teri, and I just returned from three days at the Speckled Hen Inn in Madison, WI. The fact that this was our ninth visit in ten years (COVID) is testament to the warm feelings we hold for the Speckled Hen and in particular, for the two lovely hosts, Heather and Tom. We make our annual visits during the Christmas season, and even the most dyed in the wool Scrooge would be quickly brought around by the picture postcard decorations and the creative, scrumptious breakfasts prepared by Heather. The sleeping accommodations are marvelously inviting and comfortable to the nth degree, with in room gas fireplaces and large jacuzzies. All this and animals, too . . . Including a llama! The Speckled Hen Inn is located in a lovely country setting, but only a surprisingly short car ride to downtown Madison with all the shops and restaurants and NCAA Division 1 athletics readily available. Go Bucky! Teri and I have stayed at B&B's all over the country, and none exceed the comfort, warmth, and attentiveness found at the Speckled Hen Inn. We offer our highest recommendation. read more

My wife and I celebrated our 9th anniversary at the Speckled Hen in October of 2024. We stayed there when we got engaged and have been back a few times in between. We think the Speckled Hen is the best Bed and Breakfast there is. The hosts, Tom and Heather, are wonderful people. They are accommodating, friendly, professional, experienced and always have a smile and their faces. The rooms are always very comfortable and clean. The food is so good, we wish we could stay for more. The property has a nice walking path and they have a variety of animals outside that are fun to interact with. My husband and I tried out the Speckled Inn Hen as part of a mini road trip for our anniversary. We loved it! The grounds are beautiful, and we had a nice view of the pasture outside of our room. We took a walk in the morning and were entertained by the llama and the black sheep living up to its reputation. Our room was very spacious- we were in Token Creek I believe. The bed was wonderful, and we both slept well. The jetted tub was so relaxing, and the large walk in shower with double heads was a dream. Though I wish we could adjust the shower heads. The food was delish! I want to make the kale, sweet potato hash at home. We typically prefer to eat alone, but as there was only one other couple staying there we were okay with the shared experience. All in all we hope this won't be our last stay. read more

We loved spending our wedding anniversary weekend at this charming B&B. Innkeepers were kind, welcoming, and generous while also ensuring privacy and sense of serenity. Breakfast selections change day-to-day with the freshest eggs possible (thanks to the hens!) and home-grown veggies and fresh fruits. The views of the pasture are idyllic. And then there is the bedding - what a luxurious treat! My wife and I decided to get away for the weekend and found this B&B. What a find it was! Sitting in 50 acres of land with a creek running in one of the boarders. There is of course a hen house and lamb and sheeps. The house is beautiful. A touch of Victorian but updated. Our room was the Cedar Creek room with a bathroom and whirlpool and double shower and gas fireplace. Extremely clean throughout. Very quite. The place has 5 rooms, 2 down and 2 up and a fifth outside entrance. A gathering room that is very large with every amenities I could think of including a very good variety of winds that is priced very nicely. Homemade cookies and other snacks. The sheets was Egyptian and I can't even imagine what the thread count is because we don't even have this type at home but is amazingly soft. We are looking forward to Pat's breakfast soon. More to come! We got to meet Bob at breakfast and really enjoyed talking with him and Pat. All their food is grown here. Fresh squeezed orange juice, eggs, Bober bread, bacon with maple syrup, baked tomato with pesto. Absolutely fabulous! Bob and Pat are two of the greatest people I have met and we highly recommend this B&B to anyone. Wonderful setting, great food and the accommodations is well above expectations. The University of Wisconsin-Madison cancelled our sons graduation event due to COVID-19. In turn, through no fault of ours, we canceled plans to stay at the Speckled Hen. I am sure it is a lovely place. We were looking forward to the visit. They apparently had no other guests at the time and their total outlay of energy for our reservation was minimal. Yet we received no refund or even partial refund for our first night's stay which was paid in full. I realize this is their stated policy. However, it seems like a pandemic might be a good time to revise the policy. read more

Inviting, comfortable, quite, homey, elegant, and friendly are words that come to mind when thinking of our stay at the Speckled Hen. My wife and I came here for our anniversary and we were not disappointed with any aspect. Upon arrival we were met by the Inn Keeper, Pat who gave us a warm welcome and brief tour of the gust areas and our room. The guest area, or as they call it, the "gathering room" is very warm & inviting. Here you can sit to meet with others, read a book, select a wine, or enjoy complementary drinks such as coffee, tea or soda with some light snacks available as well. The freshly baked cookies are awesome. There is also a computer to use if you wish and there are several binders and folders with local attractions or restaurants to try out. Our room, the "Madison Lakes" was outstanding. Large, and outfitted extremely well. You will not be disappointed. There is a king sized bed, a gas fireplace, nice sized TV, with good cable channels, or use of a DVD (you can borrow DVD's from the gathering room), free wifi, a small fridge, sink, and two comfortable chairs to melt into. The bathroom is ginormous, with a large whirlpool tub, a huge walk in shower complete with steam and rainfall shower head, all of it being very nice. The grounds of the Inn is really a small farm, with fruits, veggies & fresh laid eggs that find their way into the ingredients for breakfast. Around the far there are several trails to use, winding you past the barn, sheep, a lama and various beds for wild flowers, herbs and vegetables. As my wife and I walked the grounds and headed back to the Inn, we passed a good sized gazebo which seemed to beckon us in for a look. Inside there are a few comfortable chairs, wine cooler, a DVD player (with aux connections) and some wine glasses just waiting to be used. We sat in there for a while and we actually had plans on going out on the town. However, this entire scenery before us was extremely relaxing... the woods, birds singing, farm animals grazing about, all made for an extremely, wonderful relaxing environment we simply could not walk away from. So, we concluded our evening by enjoying ourselves in this tranquil environment accompanied with some wine. Ahhh... a very memorable time which we shall cherish for some time to come. After a sound sleep and outstanding shower, we headed to breakfast where we dinned with two other couples who clearly were enjoying their stay as well. The breakfast freshly made by the Inn Keepers, Pat & Bob, is made up of several courses; fruit, scones, beacon and eggs, all of which was eaten with delight and a perfect ending chapter of our stay at the Speckled Hen Inn B&B. The attention given by the Inn Keepers, Pat & Bob is perfect. They have really taken care of many of your needs in advance simply by setting up the Inn & Grounds really well. They are both attentive and engaging while at the same time not being overbearing. They really do have it well balanced! Obviously, my wife & I will be checking back in here again. So, if you are looking for a place to get away from to unwind, (which is only a short drive from the Capitol Square) or in need of some quite time, then this is the place for you! Bob, Pat, and Happy made my stay memorable and enjoyable! I stayed in the Token Creek room which is located on the ground floor. The room was so comfortable and clean! There was a little plate of cookies waiting for me along with water and a tiny bouquet of fresh flowers. I loved waking up and opening up the blinds to look out on the little farm that they own. It was so peaceful! The Inn is also centrally located (it took me 15 minutes from the time I left their inn to drop off my rental car and get through security at the airport) even though it feels like you're in the country. I don't think I left a 10 mile radius while I was there and was able to see everything I wanted. Every breakfast was phenomenal. Bob smoked the breakfast meats himself, ham one day and bacon the next. The eggs came from their chickens, the cheese and cranberry juice were also sourced from Wisconsin. I love eating local! We had some great conversations about food, wine, work (pre-running the Inn), entrepreneurship, and owning your own dream business. Last but not least, they're golden doodle, Happy, made me happy every time I saw him. If I wasn't flying home I might have tried to steal him. ;o) I will be recommending this Inn to anyone who is traveling to or through Madison! read more

This was our first bed and breakfast stay. I wasn't sure what to expect, but upon entering the grounds,it immediately felt like home. Pat and Bob we're welcoming and very personable. The food was amazing and so fresh. We came to Wisconsin for work and then to get away for a couple days. We didn't walk the grounds much but did visit the llamas on property. The room we stayed in (Heywood Hardy) was beautiful, immaculate, and incredibly comfortable. And the breakfasts....unbelievable! Homemade deliciousness, most of which was sourced from their very own farm. Looking out over the pastural property made for peaceful perfection. We even got to spend some time petting the friendly sheep. I wouldn't even think about choosing any other place to stay if/when we return to the Madison area! We have stayed at Speckled Hen Inn numerous times throughout the years & have never had bad experience there. The inn has new owners since our last visit 4 years ago & they are the most kind & nicest people & hosts. The inn felt like home. Everything was clean, bed was extremely comfortable, jetted tub added to our relaxation. Through the years we have stayed at Haywood Hardy Suite, which is located on the second floor & has amazing views of the farm & animals! This last time we chose newly remodeled & very modern Madison Lakes suite. We absolutely LOVED that suite! So beautiful & comfortable & private! And probably the best part was breakfast - 4 course meal, made of only organic ingredients, some of them grown locally by the owners on their farm. So I highly recommend this inn - we left extremely relaxed & very well fed! So grateful to the owners for their amazing hospitality! read more

This was our fourth time at the Speckled Hen and the first since Tom and Heather took over in 2016. We had a little bit of trepidation: would the breakfast be as good as Bob and Pat's? Would the atmosphere be the same? The answer to both questions is a resounding yes! There are fresh-baked cookies and refreshments in the common area, along with board games, books, a home theater, and a selection of wines. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and impeccably clean. The hosts are friendly and engaging, but give you space to enjoy and explore the property. Best of all, you're treated to a different breakfast each morning, usually consisting of three courses and made with food from the Speckled Hen farm. You could pay $250 a night to stay in a chain motel with paper-thin walls and a boring continental breakfast, or for the same price you could book at the Speckled Hen Inn, which is quiet, clean, relaxing, and serves a sumptuous farm-to-table breakfast every morning. My friend and I decided to stay at The Speckled Hen Inn in large part because the reviews and website stated that it was someplace "quiet" yet still near Madison. After I spoke with Heather I was also looking forward to using the promised "galley kitchen", since after covid there was no breakfast being served and we were planning to cook food we had brought. Upon arriving I was surprised by the Inn's proximity to a loud 4 lane highway, though initially I'd hoped the sound would be muffled once inside. It was not. From inside the fairly tight "Badgers Den" the sounds of passing cars and trucks could easily be heard throughout the night, or any time we were in the room. As for the galley kitchen, the stovetop, I was informed after asking, was disconnected years ago. I also couldn't find so much as a knife or cutting board to use, since the kitchen was essentially stripped of anything useful other than silverware, basic dishes, and a large number of corkscrews if you wanted to purchase their displayed wine. Another selling point for me was the fact that I was told we would have "the entire first floor", which I suppose we did since the other bedroom was not being used. What I wasn't told was that there was a staircase going right up from the front room, directly opposite the kitchen, to the second floor where Heather and her family are living. So while we were trying to quietly make sandwiches we could clearly hear talking and television/music coming from upstairs, not my idea of either privacy or quiet. I can say that everything was clean. However, the fact that there were at least 3 printed cards in each room explaining very specific rules, and that the Inn has no cable, leaving your only option your personal Netflix account, made us leave after only one night of a paid 2 night stay. Bizarrely, Heather didn't even ask why we never came back when it was clear we'd taken all our stuff the morning after we arrived. read more

This place was wonderful all around. I would return and I would recommend. It is a bit higher price point, but it is such a great space it is worth it. If you are looking to get away, relax, have a romantic weekend, enjoy nature, this is a great place. If you just need a place to sleep you might want something less expensive (unless you can afford it). The first floor of the house is very clean and neat, but has a very comfortable and cozy feel. There is a small kitchenette stocked with coffee, tea, cold drinks and lite snacks. If we stayed longer I could see relaxing down there enjoying a glass of wine, playing a game or reading. There is a nice selection of wine available to purchase so you don't even have to go out. Our room was very nice. King sized bed, robes, our own deck with a great view of the sheep. The bathroom had a big Jacuzzi tub and a large duel-head shower. We enjoyed glasses of champagne on the deck before heading out to explore and hike around their land. He had dinner downtown Madison which was an easy drive to and from. When we returned we were happy to have the fireplace in our room and cozied up with some of freshly baked cookies left out for guests. Breakfast was delicious. Farm fresh eggs from their hen's, herbs from the garden and all the other ingredients were local. We had good conversation with the other couple staying there as well as the owners. Our stay at The Speckled Hen Inn on August 7/8, 2018 was really terrific. Heather and Tom Shannon communicated frequently with us in advance of the trip to prepare us for our stay and in fact upon our request, provided a list of activities to consider while in the Madison area. The Inn was clean, quiet and very homey all the way down to the welcoming sheep and Lily the Llama in the pasture next to the Inn. The website is very user friendly and provides extensive background on the area. A small number of the guests had some very specific dietary needs and Heather and Tom happily prepared breakfast for these guests without missing a beat! Tom took the guests on a tour of the property and encouraged us to sample the fresh berries in their garden. We will definitely return and we encourage prospective guests to give them a try. This may be the nicest, most relaxing B&B my wife and I have ever stayed in. We have stayed there about three times when we make an annual pilgrimage to Madison for a gardening conference at Olbrich. It's in a farm house lovingly converted to a B&B. The owners are lovely, friendly people and excellent cooks too! One morning we were the only couple at breakfast and the food was fabulous!!! Their dog was present while we had breakfast; that makes it seem more like home. I wish that the llamas would come over to the fence so I could pet them. As we were looking for a place to stay during the CrossFit Games, hotels were limited, so we decided to book a stay at the Speckled Hen Inn. This was the GREATEST decision we made! This place is unlike any other. Tom and Heather are very friendly and inviting, always striking conversations and learning about their quests. The Inn is near Madison, but still secluded in over 20 acres. The setting is quite, peaceful, and beautiful. Morning Breakfast was hands down the best food! Heather cooks fresh breakfast every morning, utilizing as much food from their farm as possible. She is a wonderful cook with three course breakfast every morning. During the CrossFit games, she even researched and cooked health breakfasts for her quest, keeping the food natural and mostly paleo. She was very accommodating. Me and my wife absolutely enjoyed staying here and will definitely come back for a relaxing stay!!! I cannot rave about this place enough and assure you will not regret a stay here! read more

We had looked into some area hotels but, the website of the Speckled Hen Inn B & B was very inciting and truly sparked our interest to try it. SO GLAD WE DID!! From the moment we were greeted by one of the owners, we felt welcomed and comfortable. Beautifully clean, decorated and comfortable. The room we chose was amazing....the privacy, quiet and relaxation was just what we wanted and loved. (luxurious bedding, tub and shower) Breakfast was truly delicious and thoughtfully prepared. Just one other couple was staying at the same time as we did and it was fun and interesting to have breakfast with them and the owners Pat and Bob. Love their "greeter" Happy the dog...he is just as his name says...Happy (sweet and friendly too). We were sad to go and look forward to coming back in the near future for more than just an overnight. If you have never experienced staying at a B & B, THIS is the location to try. By far the best B & B I have stayed in (I have stayed in about 5 in my life thus far). Huge breakfasts that were yummy and a lovely, relaxing atmosphere. My co-traveler and I honestly decided to stay in the inn rather than go into Madison on a Saturday night because it was that cozy. We are not 80 but in our late 20s/early 30s! You can hear the highway when you sit outside, but it's kind of like the sound of strong winds. It's hard to believe that the property is that close to downtown Madison, yet it's a farm. Although I like to try out different B & B's, just for different experiences, I would strongly consider staying there again for a weekend getaway. read more

The Speckled Hen Inn Bed & Breakfast really is as good as it gets. My husband and I stayed two nights in the Heywood Hardy Suite, which was stunningly clean and beautifully appointed. Seriously -- you could eat off the floors, that's how clean it was! The four-poster canopy bed was super comfy and luxurious. The premises were gorgeous, just as advertised. We admired the sheep and the llama and the chickens as they did their thing in the pasture. Happy, the goldendoodle, was a fluffy and friendly and fabulous co-host. Absolutely fantastic. We were immediately and warmly greeted by Pat, the Inn Keeper, who gave us a thorough rundown of all the amenities Speckled Hen had to offer. She showed us to the Madison Lakes Room and it was everything we were expecting and more! Very clean and modern and set against the backdrop of a gorgeous and quiet property. Breakfast was delicious and again blew away expectations. This was my first bed and breakfast experience and could not have been happier.
