My boyfriend and I spontaneously decided to go up to Madison, WI for the day last weekend. We wanted to stay somewhere over night, close enough to Madison, but just off the beaten path so we could get some R&R. We ended up finding Prevailing Winds Lodge, and lucky for us there was 1 room available. 2 days later we had to force ourselves to get back to Chicago for work, but we could have stayed there indefinitely. This place just opened up in May, and it's run by a husband and wife team. I have stayed in many bed and breakfast's over the years, but this was the first time I was blown away. There are 44 acres of prairie on the grounds, including a chicken coop that provides fresh eggs for the guests, exquisite wildlife and hiking paths, a firepit, and breathtaking views all around the property. Indoors a 20+ foot tall stone fireplace, antique organ, and gigantic black leather sofa and chairs, sets the rustic feel and puts you at instant ease and comfort. 24 hours a day guests have access to fresh water infused with different fresh flavors such as lemon, cucumber, or berries grown on the property, as well as freshly baked goods such as scones, bars, and brownies. Detailed wooden furniture and artwork keep your eyes wandering and curious from room to room. As a photographer, this place was a dream come true for me. Now onto what makes this lodge the best bed and breakfast I have ever experienced: the food. It was heavenly. Steve and Jen bake goodies fresh every day. While we were there, we enjoyed brownies, chocolate-caramel granola bars, mullberry scones and muffins, chocolate covered cake balls, and chocolate covered strawberries. We stayed out late and missed turn-down service twice, so Steve brought us the goodies in the morning. Guests also have 24 access to tea and freshly ground coffee. For breakfast day 1, we enjoyed yogurt, granola, and fresh berries as well as freshly baked bread, butter, and mullberry jam. Then Steve asked us how we like our eggs. He ended up cooking us each a pepper, ham, and cheese scramble which was out of this world. He even added jalapeños because I told him how I like my eggs spicy! We were served unlimited bacon and his homemade hash browns as well. Day 2 there was baked french toast with an array of sauces- and there is always fresh squeezed orange juice at the table. On day 2 we had unlimited sugar-cured bacon... And anything you want, Steve and Jen will customize for you. They really put you at ease and make your stay as comfortable as possible. My boyfriend looked at me as we enjoyed some Morrocan Mint tea while watching the sunrise outside on the patio, and he asked me " Did we die? Is this heaven?" Lastly, the rooms are 5 star, possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. And the bathrooms are great too- luxurious soaps and shampoo are provided, as well as lush, cotton robes that we never wanted to take off. So call it a bed and breakfast if you will, but Prevailing Winds Lodge goes above and beyond my high expectations. We felt like Royalty, and there is nothing but great vibes there. STAY AWAY!!!!! HORRIBLY INSULTING MANAGEMENT! My wife and I received an email that our reservation had to be cancelled "due to family circumstances." Fine, these things happen! Needless to say, my wife and I had made upteenth plans and arrangements so someone could watch our children, while we had a chance to get away for a night for our anniversary (and we had received the night as a gift, via gift certificate). Instead of any reasonable offer, as the email said they would not be able to rebook a room for us, they offered to double the value of our gift certificate (valued at $180), IF we rented out the entire B&B for three days (at $900/night). So instead of a gift from my sister and brother-in-law to spend a night there, we don't get rebooked unless we rent out the entire B&B (so we get $180 off a $2700 bill, not including taxes!!). So, basically, we lose our gift certificate unless we spend over $2300+... $2700-$360, which is double the value of the original gift certificate. So not only is it not fair, and is not in any way to our advantage, or even equivalent to the room we reserved, it works only to their advantage (to their big advantage), essentially, selling out their rooms for them at our $2300 expense. An OFFENSIVE and INSULTING offer is what is is. When I emailed them back, pointing out how insulting this was, I got an utterly rude response from them. STAY AWAY... From the ambiance and quality of the home to the service and attention to details by the owners, our expectations were exceeded across the board. We enjoyed our stay immensely. We stayed at Prevailing Winds in early July to celebrate a family member's milestone birthday. It was the perfect place to unwind, eat well and celebrate. The property itself is in a great location - close enough to Madison if you wanted to go, but far enough away that you truly felt out of pocket. And the lodge and the rooms are gorgeous - decor that is tasteful and luxurious. I'm still dreaming about the heavenly bed. Food was incredible and farm fresh - one day savory and one day sweet. And the owners are the best type of people around. This is a true gem that you shouldn't miss! read more

Our family had a wonderful overnight visit at Prevailing Winds B&B. The bed and breakfast is a true log structure and is beautifully decorated inside and out. The owners Steve and Jen have invested in some very nice and high end features. Their hospitality was wonderful and they paid great attention to detail for their guest's comfort. Our children said they were going to barricade themselves in their room and not leave. My wife and I felt the same wanting to spend the remainder of a rainy day in the comfort of the bed and breakfast. Breakfast was a special treat with fresh juice, double cut bacon and homemade French toast with berries, granola and yogurt. We would love to return. They truly offer a special paradise. read more

This was our first B&B experience and it was fantastic! The owners were very friendly and showed us to the Mountain Pine Room with a king size bed from heaven. I'm sure that this is what it is like to sleep on a could. So amazingly comfortable. The shower and spa jet bathtub were great, too. The ambiance of the whole place was very cool. A softly lit log cabin that exudes warmth and coziness. We sat outside at the firepit and also inside by the indoor fireplace. We kept the windows open at night which made it extra cozy in the bed. Breakfast the next day was also amazing. We had blueberry french toast with bacon. Everything was amazing and the bacon was phenomenal. Overall we had a great time. We had our wedding weekend at Prevailing Winds Lodge over 8/15/15. We rented the lodge from Thursday through Sunday and held our rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception there right onsite. We can't say enough about our experience with PWL. The lodge itself is just beautiful; we stayed there those three nights as a group of 15 (the wedding party) and spent our time hanging out in the living room or outside on the incredible grounds. The setting for the ceremony and reception was incredible, up on a gorgeous hilltop with circumferential views of the surrounding prairie and farmland. Walking the long but gorgeous prairie aisle with my parents up to the ceremony site was one of my favorite memories of the wedding. It was great for our size of wedding (about 65 people) but could have supported a lot larger crowd as well. Being able to stay at our venue with our favorite people/wedding party for essentially a weekend-long celebration was the other huge benefit for us, as most of our guests were from out of town and we felt like we really got to spend quality time with them. The owners, Steve and Jen, were incredibly helpful throughout the planning process. They responded to loads of emails and questions. Steve was available for questions/help during our weekend, helped coordinate with our tent rental company to make sure things got set up right, and help us move some of the heavier things like tables, etc up and down from the ceremony site. They were wonderfully friendly with my family and guests and were great to interact with throughout the day. Doing our wedding at PWL worked out to be exactly what we wanted- a laid back but beautiful outdoor setting. It definitely took more legwork to have a wedding here than an all-inclusive type setup at a hotel or something like that, and we perhaps had more to do in terms of coordinating vendors, setting up tables/chairs/décor ourselves and other tasks than at a more traditional venue, but we loved every minute of it and looking back, we wouldn't have done it any other way. For a couple wanting a unique and gorgeous outdoor setting for their wedding, we definitely recommend Prevailing Winds Lodge. read more

A friend and I went to prevailing winds to celebrate graduation, and I couldn't have asked for a nicer way to celebrate and relax. I have stayed at several b&b's, and this is easily one of my favorites. They had every amenity that I could have asked for. The decor was beautiful but comfortable, and the breakfast was amazing. The bed was so comfortable that my boyfriend wanted to buy a mattress like the one there. I definitely recommend staying here. -Jen read more

We are repeat customers to Prevailing Winds Lodge and we will keep coming back! We've been in the summer and now the winter-it's lovely for all seasons! Steve & Jen always make us feel right "at home". It is such a cozy, rustic lodge-yet elegant too. The food is fantastic! We are outdoors people-so being close to Blue Mounds state park is great-in the summer for hiking and biking and in the winter for x-country skiing or snow shoeing. This B & B has become our favorite & we'd highly recommend it! read more

We had a wonderful time here. We only had one night away, desperately needing a break from the city, and this lodge was the perfect choice to make. The fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies with sea salt and orange-water were a great welcome at the door (as were the pooches!). The room and lodge in general were comfortable, quiet, and cozy when needed. It was the best night's sleep in a very long time. The hosts know what they're doing. We would highly recommend this lodge and plan on returning soon! read more
