Calimax is the Mexican version for "el super" as known in California. same owners; I learned this from my bestie as we made a visit in Rosarito Baja California this past weekend. It is such a unique grocery experience, very clean and stocked up well. As soon as I walked in, I noticed they have a hot and ready station stocked up with meat-not chicken-but meat! that is already cooked and ready to consume. I ended up buying the T-bone steak. The meat itself was seasoned well, however a bit too rough to chew. I'd rate it 3/5. I'm used to only chicken in America being ready to go! They also have several alcoholic selections, beer and other spirits. This store offers self check out as well as the cashiers who are ready to assist. They also offer pesos exchange currency which is highly suggested to carry around when visiting Mexico. But this store also accepts debit/credit cards. The eggs were the iconic topic of the weekend; coming at a pack of 30 for $5.47 you definitely cant beat that in America's current prices. We survived off eggs for our four day weekend in Rosarito. Food definitely tastes different compared to California's groceries, but that's because they probably don't use pesticides in their veggies and such. Most of their produce is grown near by so I'm sure that's where the stores get their supply. Overall, this store was a huge convenience to have next to our Airbnb stay, walking distance makes it even better. Parking lot is big as well. read more

This place reminds me of Food for Less. Price is comparable to US. Selected choices and parking is limited. The good things here are: They provide EV charging station close to resorts. Close vicinity to restaurants. Employees working here around the clock. Ensuring the surrounding parking is clean and no cart has been left everywhere. read more

This visit wasn't so great. It was like check out line Armageddon. There was no rhyme or reason to why everything was taking so long. Normally these stores aren't too bad and the people were nice but the checkout was a nightmare. I don't live down here and everybody that was living down here was asking me me if it's like this all the time and what is the proper time to come to the store so this doesn't happened. I'm imagining that's early morning. I found the things that I needed and the people that helped me find them were great. It's just that they have to get this check out thing on your control troll so things don't look like the picture that you see that I posted. read more

Had a good visit at the local Calimex in Rosarito recently. As a full service grocery store you should be able to find most and basic needs. Meats, poultry, fruits, veggies, breads, beer and liquor, all is pretty much here. Picked up some pretty good tortillas, queso Oaxaca, fresh salsa, veggies, drinks, ready cooked chicken and other items and called it a day. I liked that that they checked temperatures prior to entering the space. If you're not up to par on the currency rates, the register systems provide the price in dollars as well. The parking lot is good sized and there is an ATM inside. The prices are reasonable as well. read more

Pros: Plenty of parking available. ATM inside. Large variety of products. Great dollar exchange rate (to pay with). Pretty good prices. Good produce and bread. Cons: Terrible meat condition, I would not buy meat from here or take it even if it was free, specially the chicken. Very dusty items, as if it has been on shelf for a long time. Sometimed the change is in pesos if you pay with dollars and the change may be wrong (Make sure you do the math and ask for dollar rate). Overall well calimax has some products cheaper than walmart and the parking space in the area sometimes just makes it worth the stop. read more

Full service supermarket with lots of choices of great homemade salsa! They even had fresh and frozen turkeys with most of the American fixings during Thanksgiving. Like this store, lots of places in BC do not take debit cards, but they have an ATM Machine located inside this store. During at least 3 visits, I didn't run into any store employees who spoke any english, FYI They sell liquor, beer, and wine but they do not sell liquor before 10AM ...must be the law. Another thing - Don't forget the lbs. to kilo conversion or you could end up with way too much carne asada like I did! read more

Nice, clean, full service grocery store if you need something while visiting Rosarito. We were able to find everything we needed to stock up our vacation rental and it was quite a deal. There was no longer a salsa bar that the other reviews had mentioned but they do have an extensive butcher and fresh made cheese counter at the back of the store. They have a very limited booze section but if you are just looking for Mexican beer it will suffice. read more

Full service grocery store with butcher and bakery. Salsa tasting bar, warm freshly made tortillas, produce. Great prices. ATM machine. Accepts credit cards and cash - US currency is okay. They'll give you UD$ as change. No debit cards accepted at check-out. Good exchange rate. Ice, liquor, beer, just like Von's in the USA. Make sure you notify your credit card company or bank you're in Mexico, I had two cards denied because I didn't notify them I was traveling out of the country. The people that bag your groceries at Calimax are usually seniors or teens that do not get paid by the store. They work for tips so give them a few pesos for every bag they bag. Pesos are preferred over dollars, but either will do. A dollar or two would be generous. read more

This place is sick!!! It's the Mexican version of a Super Walmart. It's cheap, clean, modern-looking, plenty of parking, and has literally everything under the sun that you would need as far as food and clothes goes (if you need that). read more
