Tables, beverages, and TV

I have had this eatery bookmarked for the longest time. I finally took the plunge and visited the place last night. I was in the area to pick up a gently used paper shredder. I already have one that works well. However, the container is small and the frequent emptying of it got to me. My new one worked out nicely. After having picked up my shredder, I was hungry and needed dinner. This eatery was five minutes away from the seller's home. Perfect! California Sandwiches is located in a plaza, across from a Petro-Canada station that I recently frequented. This plaza has a Denny's and Tim Horton's. I parked and walked in. The eatery is bright and clean. I walked up to the counter and immediately placed my order. I have fond memories as a teenager of my dad buying me a veal sandwich from a food truck, so I could have it for lunch the following day at school. I loved this sandwich so much. The veal was tender. It also came with mushrooms and peppers, with a cheerful tomato sauce. Naturally, I went with the veal sandwich. The last time I ordered a veal sandwich, I pilled on so many veggies that they all slid out of my sandwich. I learned my lesson this time. I went with mushrooms only. I got a Diet Dr. Pepper. You don't see too many of those. When I do, I'm at a gas station! You basically help yourself by selecting the beverage that you want from the fridge. I paid by debit. You can also pay by credit card and cash. There was one other customer waiting for his order. I tried figuring out where I wanted to sit. I chose a table with leather seats on one side, and wooden chairs on the other. I was facing one of the two TVs in the restaurant, so I could watch and eat. I was impressed at how quickly my sandwich was made. I had barely settled into my seat and was checking my e-mail when the friendly woman came over with my sandwich. Wow! The sandwiches here are massive! Sure, you are paying nearly $10 for your base sandwich. However, it's worth it. I was thankful that my sandwich was cut in half. I was also supplied with a generous supply of napkins. You will need them! My sandwich was a couple of inches high. Generous portions of tender, lightly breaded veal and sliced mushrooms were in my sandwich, with deliciously fresh, soft bread holding everything together. Memories of eating veal sandwiches as a teenager came back. So good! So messy! So me! The bathroom was clean. I noticed when I got back to my table that there was a paper plate underneath the leather bench. It's the only thing that I can think of that could be improved upon. If you want a delicious, made-to-order sandwich that is ready for you quickly and are a veal fan, I'd recommend visiting this place. I will definitely be back. (76)

This really tastes like breading alone! Maybe shouldn't be flattened quite so much?

This was pretty disappointing. They are definitely skimping on the chicken, it tastes like breading and sauce. Twice now they forgot to add toppings i asked for! Definitely going a lil drive further to the California Sandwiches on Hwy 7 and Weston!

Veal parmigiana and pasta and fagiolo soup

My colleagues and I decided to go out for some sandwiches at lunch time. We had tried this place in the past and were always happy. The service is quick, efficient and accurate. This time I ordered a small veal parmigiana sandwich with cheese and mushrooms. I took the small size because I had a pasta and fagiolo soup for starters. It was my first time having this soup. The soup was actually very good and surprised me. It was nice and hot, the beans were cooked just right and the pasta was firm. The sauce was Tomato based with nice oregano essence. The sandwich was, as usual, simply amazing. Starting with the soft fresh bun to the properly cooked veal and delightful tomatoes sauce with some sautéed mushrooms. Simply delish!

Busy place with OK sandwiches. A little skimpy on the ingredients compared to other Italian sandwich places in Vaughan and pricier too.

Jersey Mike's Subs

Jersey Mike's Subs

Two Tuesday nights ago, I had just watched a concert film at Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan. I was heading to my car and needed to grab some dinner. I saw this Jersey Mike's Subs, which was new to me. It made sense to grab a sub and eat it at home. There was lots of parking in this area. I kept my car parked near Cineplex and walked over to this eatery. Once I was inside the store, there were a couple of customers before me. My usual order is the number 9, which is the turkey club sub. I tend to get the regular, which is the medium size out of the three that you can get. I got a friendly woman who was preparing two subs before mine. She asked what I'd like. I said the number 9. I was a bit rusty, as I haven't had anything from Jersey Mike's for a good year. I forgot to say that i wanted my number 9 on rosemary parmesan bread. This woman didn't ask me about the bread and defaulted to making my sub with white bread. It was okay. However, I would have liked to have been prompted. This woman prepared my sub with one of the two subs that the couple in front of me had ordered. It was weird. Wouldn't you want to work on the two subs that the couple had ordered together, and then separate mine? My sub and one of theirs weren't even the same. The male from the couple had to say something at the end when it was time for him to pay. It looked like she was going to charge him with one sub, when he was clearly paying for two. Weird. The woman got back to making my sub. She asked if I wanted it Mike's way, which meant onions, lettuce, tomatoes, red wine vinegar, olive oil, oregano, and salt. My usual is Mike's way minus the onions. I said that. Mike's way minus the onions. The woman asked me to repeat it. I did. Her colleague behind her turned around to look at me. I looked right back at her. Are you staring at me because you are quietly judging me on my omitting onions on my sub? I don't see anything wrong with it. Why rudely turn around? You aren't working on my sub. Your colleague is. I remember saying the same thing at the Markham location. I got the you-don't-like-onions comment. Nope, that's not true. I love onion rings and French onion soup. I love thinly sliced raw onions. Don't give me thick-cut raw onions. It's the raw burn that I don't enjoy. I found the staring to be rude. In the past, I'd be uncomfortable. I will not be made to feel bad. I will stare you down until you look away, which is exactly what I did to make the rude woman stop. I've ordered this sub without onions at the Kitchener location countless times. No one has every looked at me funny. I miss that level of customer service and respect. At the checkout, you can enter your phone number associated with your Jersey Mike's rewards account to earn points. I have enough points for a free sub. I didn't use them for this order. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and was good. I grabbed my sub and left. I put my sub in my insulated bag. It wasn't a hot sub. Just habit. I'm glad that I did. When I got home, for the first time in my life, a Jersey Mike's sub leaked red wine vinegar and soaked the paper bag. My insulated bag kept my car and me clean. Luckily, I only had to wash out the bag. Still, I shouldn't have had to. My sub was good. It needed my usual rosemary parmesan bread. It was also more soggy than usual. The applewood smoked bacon was excellent, as were the roast beef, turkey, swiss cheese, and mayo. It's hard to say whether this place was heavy-handed with the red wine vinegar or olive oil. I also don't know if it was a wrapping issue. I do know that I had a wet sub bag. It's a three-star review. Let me find another new Jersey Mike's in the greater Toronto area and see if I get more rudeness asking to have the onions omitted in my sub. (399)

We tried these for the first time at the new location... took a while (about 30min) for our food to be ready because of all the orders and they seemed backed up even though they had like 14 people on staff working. Flavors on the subs were nice overall. Chicken was kind of dry on its own and my husband said his Philly steak one was overpowered by the delicious onions that the steak didn't stand out at all. Will probably come back when it calms down a bit
