I love sushi. There, that's that out of the way.
The first time I had it was from Tesco at least 12 years ago, not the best introduction but the idea of fish and seafood, rice and the obsessive precision involved has stuck with me since than fateful day.
California Rolls sell four or five different freshly prepared rolls to take-away. Now, you're not going to get quite the intrigue and flair you do with The Ginger Tree, there's no crab roe, fresh tuna, clam or deep fried shrimp maki but there are the more reserved and 'European friendly' offerings available.
You can choose either a mango roll, cheese....roll.., California roll or tuna. I went for the classic maki-zushi California. This American take on Japanese cuisine comes from a chef in a restaurant based in LA who decided that avocado was a similar substitute for tuna. Along with the avocado is rice, nori, cucumber and I think crab stick.
It was all perfectly fresh and expertly rolled. It was a change from the heavy, fatty, buttery decadence offered elsewhere in the market.
At around £4 a roll it's good value. I still haven't discovered what the cheese roll is yet but I will on my next visit. read more
