Tacos are $6 each, or grab two for $10. Trust me, you can't just have one... they might have other 'especials' so look at what the board says. My husband and I shared two tacos between us (I know, I said you can't have just one... I still mean it), and an agua fresca. He had the Beef Juan/Beef Barbacoa, and I had the Tacos de Calabacitas/Veggie taco. Oh my goodness, the veggie taco was NOM-nom! It takes a lot to impress me with vegetarian Mexican stuff, but these guys were genius having those roasted peptides in the mix -- it gave it the whooop! Out front of the ordering/pick up window is a shelf of bottled hot sauces. Yes they have Tabasco, but please, please, don't pick that up. Try the Cholula, ok? Seriously, give them a go...

Since moving here I've been searching for a place that makes legit tacos. I am so happy that I found this place, and they have amazing prices (for Australia that is, I'm still getting used to the difference). AND they have Horchata, which is a delicious cinnamon rice water, and Jacaima, which is super refreshing. I ordered the Beef Juan, which originally came with pico de gallo and salsa verde, but substituted that for white onion, cilantro, and salsa roja (my favorite). The best part is that they even include a lime! You really can't have too much lime. After eating one taco I went for another. Can't wait to eat here again! I really really recommend this place. Best tacos around.

I've definitely had GYG before but I have to fess up that I'm one that has stuck to the foods I know best such as their burrito bowls/burritos. Sadly I pass on the quesadillas & tacos as I don't believe in paying that much for the quantity you get (3 small tacos or quesadillas for $10++): especially if you've experienced way better for less elsewhere. But I ordered the grilled streak salad at GYG & it was great. When I first opened the takeaway container box I was a bit sad to see small little pieces of steak sprinkled around the salad, but when I started to eat it, it made sense that the steak pieces were that small as it was definitely more convenient to eat & enjoy as I could imagine how annoying it would be to cut through big chunks of steak. GYG is one of those places you have to take advantage of when accepting the freebies. I say this because my salad was quite boring before I added the extra jalapenos, cilantro, red onion & my choice of smokey chipotle tabasco sauce. If it weren't for the extras I wouldn't be as satisfied. The interior of GYG makes it a nice place to hang. There's a place to wash your hands as they know the food can get messy, they serve alcohol & the servers were attentive even though they were trying to survive lunch rush. I also liked their new value meal promo at the moment where you can get a mini burrito (still a decent portion), with a side of nachos, guac & a drink for $12.50. This is great since my salad was already $11.00 - if I ordered this $12.50 meal like my brother did, I know I would've happily abused the sauces & sides (freebies) section once again.

Tables on the street were too crowded next to each other. Kept bumping into the other people on each side of us, so we finally went inside. The menue is misleading & the food is more from Honduras than Mexico. I've been to Mexico on multiple occasions and I know the difference between a burrito & a turd wrapped in a tortilla. My wife had an Enchillada - I think the chef should google it. Not even close. The salsa's were some form of art project and when I asked for a side of jalapeno's, I got one deepfried. c'mon guys.... keep it simple. If this is Mexican, I'm going to start taking LSD to get my mind into the same plateau as the chef so my expectations will be lower. It's kinda hard to mess up Mexican food, but hey - now I know to avoid the place. Over priced @ $45 for two in relation to what we ordered, and what we got. Good luck if you go here. Staff was friendly though, & they did try 3 times to get our order right. Chips were stale and cold & nothing to dip em in. Obviously, neither of us were thrilled & will not be going back.

But of course this also means to make way for these fresh new options, older establishments have had to close their doors.. As seems to be the cycle of life along this busy strip. After today's visit I'm a firm fan of La Cantina Mexicana, one of the very freshest new-kids-on-the-Oxford-St-block, and I sincerely hope the locals and visitors will embrace its casual and fresh atmosphere. On our visit today we were welcomed by beautiful bright and cheery fence palings outside the restaurant. The scene was completed by the two men sitting at the outdoor bar on stools with icy cold Coronas. The traditional (and amazingly not cheesy) music filled our ears as we entered the restaurant and we were instantly transported to what I imagine a real Mexican cantina to feel like. Staff were very welcoming and courteous. We chose indoor seating at one of a few mosaic tables with comfortable leather benches over the less formal option in the adjacent room filled with tables and bar stools - I would imagine this other space being used for drinks and bar snacks and could be used for functions. The menu was everything you would expect from a traditional restaurant with many Mexican favourites. I was pleasantly surprised to see some interesting extras such as the snapper with avocado salsa. We settled on the fish mentioned above, with the tacos with chicken and two Coronas to accompany the meals. The men sitting outside did their job selling the idea of an early afternoon beverage. We were quickly served our drinks along with a starter "on the house" which consisted of the most creamy and deliciously spiced corn I have ever had. Staff explained that this was usually a drinking snack over in Mexico, and we were asked to report on how we liked it. The meals arrived quickly after the starter was polished off and our fingers were licked. My tacos were presented on a long plate with many lovely small jars filled with spiced chicken mixed with corn and beans, guacamole (wasted on me as I'm allergic), sour cream, shredded tasty cheese and a mild chilli sauce. I had great fun filling the tacos up and having them crack all over me! We decided tacos were definitely not a good first date meal choice, but thankfully after being together for 6+ years the man-thing was fine with seeing me with taco filling all down my chin. ;) The tacos themselves were thick and delicious, and all of the ingredients tasted very fresh. The snapper was served in a lovely buttery taco shell filled with salad. Two jars contained the avocado salsa and sour cream. The fish itself was deep fried and crumbed, and was rather dry. Everything else was lovely according to the man (I couldn't taste the salsa) - very fresh and seasoned beautifully. I would have liked to have seen the fish steamed or fried without the coating to let the flavour of the fresh fish really work its magic. It came to just over $50 all up; very reasonable in my mind. I advised the staff the corn was delectable, and they were happy to hear we would be coming back very soon - most likely with friends in tow for a few evening nibbles and drinks. I don't think this place will have any issues competing with La Quinta Inn further down the strip. The atmosphere in this little eatery is more casual, light, and bar oriented than their more formal sit-down restaurant counterpart. I am dying to go back and sink a few more coronas and get stuck into their margaritas.

I tried this place out on a public holiday and they obviously wasnt expecting so many people as they were fairly under-staffed. This meant that the service was often slow but it couldn't really be helped - it wasn't like she was just standing around ignoring us! The menu is extensive with local dishes from all over the latin america precincts. Further, they do a great taco deal where you can buy any four of the 19 different taco (including 4 vegetarian options) for only $24! The soft shell tacos are well sized so by the time you have finished the fourth you are perfectly sated. The restaurant is decorated with various Latin American ornaments which adds to the cozy atmosphere with their bright colours and funky patterns. Its a shame that all the tables are covered by a big paper sheet (were we meant to bring our own colouring pens for when our conversation drys up?) and some of the plates were plastic but this may be aimed at families with kids which are messy or something...?? It looked like a family run restaurant and they obviously work well together creating a successful business with many patrons and since I'm definitely going to go back, they've certainly worked their latino voodoo well!

Brooklyn Standard is a very cozy underground bar, themed (as per the name) in a very American way. Having just come back from a 3 week holiday in America, this place just totally appealed to us in just the right way :) It has a very casual feel to the place, and you can easily sit at the bar, or hideaway in a booth. They've got a good selection of beers including our personal favourite American Beer - Blue Moon. Some on tap, some in bottles. They've also got a very interesting selection of cocktails, one that even includes root beer, which is absolutely delicious! To make things even better, they have live music every night from about 7.30pm, and serve free pretzels. Beers are about $8.50, cocktails range from $14-$16. Note though, and this has also been mentioned in other reviews - those pretzels are the only food that you will find here. This is purely a drinks and cocktails bar. Still, I rate this 5 out of 5, and will definitely be back.

Brooklyn Standard is classier than Coyote Ugly but not the type of place to have an exclusive guest list, this "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" venue gives the CBD a cool and classic bar to enjoy a few brews (or cocktails) with a live band playing. It's frills and whistles are few but, you know, when you're the cool kid you just are. You don't need to do a song and dance about it. And that's Brooklyn Standard. It was a grand spot to catch up with a girlfriend and we enjoyed table service. There is no food menu - it's a bar in the truest sense and the most you'll get to devour is a bowl of tasty pretzels. Between her beers, my one cocktail and a cider we left satisfied and surprisingly not a lot poorer. The prices are reasonable and not about to skin your purse alive. The underground cavern is cosy and there's table & chair dining or booths for the more romantic gestures. Of course, it's early days but I can't wait to return. It's the friend you don't have to pretend around - you can just be yourself.
