Sure our imaginations were running wild, but it seemed like Junk Bar is the kind of place where that can happen. It begins when you walk through an unsuspecting glass sliding door, through a plush curtain and into the hip and casual lounge bar that you can't possibly imagine exists in this strip of suburbia. Yet, exist it does and forgetting you've just walked off an Ashgrove foot path, here you find yourself in a bar where you're imagining it is all part of a Tarantino flick. But I digress. The cocktails here are around the $15 mark which is respectable and the service is done so with a smile. We ordered bagels from the bites menu, purely for the novelty of drinking cocktails and eating a bagel. Don't judge! Deciding what to drink was the hardest part - I ended up going with a trusty Gin-based Bramble but could have easily been seduced by drinks with names like Pie in The Sky (polish vodka, vanilla galliano, cloudy apple juice and cinnamon) or a Winter Blanket.

When our breakfast arrived it looked good, but as soon as we touched the eggs they were hard and rubbery and our hearts sank. There's not much worse than overcooked poached eggs. Cutting into the eggs, all 4 were hard boiled with an overwhelming smell and taste of vinegar. If the eggs were just hard we would have still eaten them, but all we could taste was vinegar and the whites were rubbery and inedible. The waitress offered to replace them with fried eggs after talking to the cook. She advised that the cook could only make poached eggs with vinegared water and they couldn't guarantee that the same thing wouldn't happen again. We look forward to soft poached eggs with breakfast every Saturday, so we took the chance that if they were cooked properly they wouldn't taste like vinegar...unfortunately that was a very bad mistake. The eggs were replaced with terribly under-cooked poached eggs with raw whites oozing all over the plate. The thin layer of cooked whites on the outside still tasted only like vinegar so we just ate the yolks. The rest of the breakfast was nice, but we left feeling like the cook had no idea how to poach eggs, or had deliberately under cooked the eggs to the point that they were also inedible. Either way, we wouldn't go back.

The cheeseburger is always my go to, when trying a new burger joint and this didn't disappoint me. I observed the melted cheese when my waitress brought the dish and I was salivating. The patty was perfectly cooked, the brioche was light and tasty. My taste buds were doing the samba! Joy of joys! The buffalo wings were flavoursome and absolutely divine! Stopping by on my way to co-working at The Coterie, I loved that they now offer a 4 oz. take-away coffee option. The smaller the better IMO! Almost every table will filled (which is good going seeing as they only opened on the 19th) and amongst the couples and a friends populating the venue, there was one big family table having dinner. It diversity of the venue was comforting and reminded me of the English pubs I spent time in growing up. We had one quick drink on Saturday and tonight I returned to grab a quick dinner. It was quieter tonight, which suited what I was looking for. The menu, in my opinion, is spot on in size. Bat snacks, sharing sized options, sandwiches, sides and bigger plates. It's creative, but not over the top or complicated. I opted for the chip butty, because chips in bread. Come at me. The bread came filled with shoe strings fries, black garlic mayo and homemade tomato sauce. It was crisp and saucy and... bloody perfect really. Sitting at the bar (it's all bar service), I chatted to the bar staff who were just the right level of attentive. I asked for a glass of red to go with my sandwich, a slightly odd pairing, I know. My glass of Pinot was light, velvety and was the perfect match. For a venue that's been open for an entire seven days, they're doing something right. Wait, scratch that. Everything right.

Since it was Ten Bucks Tuesday, we decided to order a couple of pizzas to share and get to chatting. When our pizzas came out, they were the same Vampire Mad Prawn except one was with the death (spicy) sauce. I explained to our server how we had ordered the Mad Man Chilli Spank and he told me that two prawn pizzas were written on his order form. Before I could reply, the lady who took our order asked what was the situation and corrected it immediately by saying they would make another pizza right away and apologized for the inconvenience! Talk about great customer service! No fuss and immediately took care of the situation. She even offered to box up the other prawn pizza for takeaway! The Mad Man Chilli Spank is NOT for the faint of heart. There might have been some tears at the table but I rest assure you not from me. The pizzas are super thin with a nice crispy crunch and the toppings were tasty as well. The salami for the chill spank was tasty and I am so glad it was on there to diffuse some of the heat. The porter beer was a huge hit and they also had little creatures IPA, white rabbit white ale, and pip-squeak apple cider on tap. Great place to hang out with friends, catch up with someone special, or have dinner and drinks. They were super friendly and I will definitely come back!
