Black Pearl is divided into three parts: the wholesale warehouse, the retail shop, and the cooking school. This makes it rather difficult to review the place as a whole, especially as I've never attended any of their cooking events, but I will do my best!
Another review has likened Black Pearl to a foodies lollyshop, and this is certainly an apt description: ethnic supermarkets may have a monopoly on those cool, hard-to-find ingredients at ridiculously low prices, but Black Pearl is like walking into the pantry of your dreams, with every high-end food product you can imagine, from 20-year aged balsamic vinegar to absolutely gorgeous single-origin chocolate, and everything else in between.
Unfortunately, I have never had a lot of luck in the retail store: a number of times, I've turned over an item to find it well expired, and staff were often snobby and rude: thankfully, this seems to have changed in the last 6 months and everyone is lovely! But the retail store enables you to see a large portion of everything they sell, and is a huge amount of fun to look through.
If you're not sure what individual item to buy, they often have gift packs.
The wholesale warehouse is where the real magic is though. I came to pick up an order one day and, as we walked through the warehouse, was told "Wait, you have to smell this": it was a bag of saffron, just arrived. And then you walk past the rows and rows of different chocolates, and sauces and... honestly, I could spend several days in there, just looking through everything one by one. (chances are, unless you're a wholesale customer, you will probably only be allowed in the retail section)
If you have that foodie friend who you can never quite figure out how to impress, get yourself to Black Pearl and you'll be sure to find something that will knock their socks off. (and try some of the properly aged balsamic vinegar: you won't regret it). read more
