We were visiting Calico Ghost Town today and got hungry. I love to shop local so this was an easy decision. Let me tell you I am so glad we did. My husband ordered the fish and I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak. Both were served hot and fast! It was delicious! They portions are good and you won't leave hungry. I highly recommend this restaurant when your in Calico.

I'm writing this review, from an almost writing a bad review stand point. We got there at 1:25pm, and we saw a sign stating that we couldn't be seated until after 1:30 due to some sort of lunch for a group of people. Alright, we will wait...and wait...1:31pm, waited some more....1:35pm, waited a little bit more...1:40pm, I finally walked in and asked if we could be seated. The waiter said, and I quote, "Not until 1:30pm." I calmly said, "It's 1:40pm" Oops, I'm sorry, yes, please have a seat anywhere. We sat down and ordered a mineral water and a raspberry ice tea. Ice tea was watered down and the mineral water had an ant in it...Yes, an ant....lol...Not a complete deal breaker. Waiter traded it out for another one. The food was good and moderately served. We got full. I ordered the Double cheeseburger meal and a corn dog, wifey ordered the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and veggies. The waiter was very nice and accommodating. Overall 3.5 stars. Pricing wasn't to bad either. I would definitely come here again. I want to try their breakfast.

I HIGHLY recommend this place when your in the calico ghost town, I absolutely adore this place. My burger was juicy and flavorful, but the best thing was the fried pickles, if you love pickles GET THEM!! They were so crunchy and juicy and the ranch was creamy and savory. The service was absolutely amazing, the staff was really friendly especially Brenda, I will definitely return for Brenda. The environment was very cozy and rustic. I will for sure be back

Wonderful please to eat. Menu is limited to a few favorites like their fried chicken dinner which is the best fried chicken I have ever had. Sorry Nana, it's freaking amazing. The crunch of the chicken takes it to 11! The other stuff on the plate was meh. Potatoes needed more seasoning, the veg was over boiled, the roll was not home made. But the star of the plate, the chicken was off the hook. Other favorites on there are chicken fried steak. Really good and big PBJ, Tina sandwiches , busily it's and gravy along with huge salads. The soft drink are huge mason jars. The decor is super fun old western. Feels like classic western. Walter Knott bought this town back in the 70s and restored it. It's fun!

Located toward the entrance of Calico Ghost Town sits this large restaurant. We walked in for a late lunch on a weekday to find the place nearly empty. The interior is appropriately western in it's decor with many vintage photos on the walls. There are an abundance of tables inside which can handle the busy season and quite a few patio tables as well (all under cover). Food is served on old tin plates and beverages in mason jars. The menu is mainly sandwiches and burgers. We sat down inside and our waitress quickly brought napkins & utensils and soon took our order. She was nice and efficient but not one to crack a smile. I ordered a club sandwich with homemade chips. The food came out in 5 minutes. During the short wait we had a few peanuts from the bucket on the table. It's one of those places where you toss the shells onto the floor. My sandwich was simply okay. The toasted bread surrounded some cheap deli ham and turkey, a slice of cheddar, fresh tomato and less fresh lettuce. A strip of deliciously crunchy bacon was also in the mix. It was passable but unmemorable. The chips were interesting in that they were cut in odd shapes and had some sort of unusual seasoning. I ate several, unsure if I actually liked them or not. I'm still not sure about the flavor but I was hungry enough that I finished most of them. For a place in a tourist trap in the middle of nowhere the food will satisfy as long as you keep your expectations in check.

Great restaurant to hit up while camping or visiting Calico. Service - Great friendly staff and on point on orders. Food - Limited breakfast menu but the food is good with decent portions. They also provide you with peanuts at no charge. Cost - Fair prices and I believe it was a bit cheaper than your typical breakfast spots. Views - Beautiful views of the Calico mines and the train from the deck. Venue - Has a charm to it to take you back to the old days with furniture, decor style etc. Will be back for sure in my next Calico visit for sure.

The kind of place where I'd love to sit and rock for a while, hear people's stories!

On a drive to Vegas, in order to beat the traffic, I loaded up the kids in LA in their PJs at 6am and told them I promised to feed them at a small town called Calico. They had no idea that it was a ghost town. I love to surprise them! We pulled into town right as the town and this restaurant were opening for business. I felt like we stepped into Little house on the Prairie the moment we stepped up on their porch and through the front doors. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we walked in. We had the pick of the seating and an amazing view of the mine and train track from the back windows. We didn't order anything out of the ordinary from what we normally get elsewhere for breakfast but the ingredients made it taste more home made and the size made you feel like a guest! Our three-thumb review gives it three finger-licking thumbs up! My teen son was thrilled at the portion size as well. My tween daughter loved her visibly chocolate-coated chocolate milk served in a Mason jar! The THICKest bacon I have ever had has now wrecked me for any other restaurant breakfast!! The server was very friendly and the meal was cooked quickly! Funny, my daughter was not amused by the peanut shells in the floor. I find it charming! Still, we would go again! We were thankful, though, to have a town to step outside and explore and not just jump right back into the car. For a full review of the activities at Calico please check out my blog (link on my profile)!

Better this time around. Soooo much better. Last time, it seemed like everything on the menu was fried (dinner menu) and came over-fried (blech.) This time, the food was soooo much better (lunch & kids menu.) I went for the pulled pork sandwich- (there is nothing healthy on the menu FYI) and while it was a bit tough, I have to say it was delicious. It wasn't a menu option, but I requested fruit as my side- same for my son's child menu item. They were happy to oblige. Service is always friendly here. They do get busy so I don't expect crazy-fast service. When it's slow, service is efficient and professional.

I'm be star off because their restrooms need some major attention; either a good scrub or complete renovation.

It was a Saturday morning around 9:30ish and was surprised it wasn't that busy. We found a booth and saw we had to scan a QR code for the menu. OK, I admit, I hate that. Then they had instructions to download the app to place your order. I assume this was put in place for COVID. Finally, a waitress came over and said she'll take our order. Thank goodness! I ordered French Toast with sausage patties, which I totally prefer over links but it's so rare to find them on the menu, and my partner had a breakfast burrito. The food arrived fairly quick and it was perfect. I'm not into fancy breakfast foods so keep is simple and I'm happy. The breakfast burrito was HUGE and my partner wasn't able to finish it. The entire breakfast with coffee was about $40, which I felt was very reasonable by today's standards. We both mentioned how we recently went to famous SoCal fast food hamburger joint (not In-and-Out) and it was $30 for 2 people, and not as good. My wife liked the tortilla soup, but the spaghetti and meatballs wear subpar. Now I guess, I shouldn't expect good Italian food from basically a sports bar but I'll have to say it just was relatively bland. I ordered the habanero pineapple boneless wings thinking they would be spicy-- they were not. Now I will admit, I've gotten used to hot sauce so maybe that's why they weren't that spicy. I'm not sure if they're supposed to be soft, but the boneless wings were not crispy, maybe the sauce made the better soft. But, I did not like it, I was expecting more crispy. But again, maybe is this is the way that they're served. The ambience is okay it's a sports bar. Kind of small as well but very busy. The service was great. I was greeted within less than 2 minutes from sitting down, and I had multiple servers taking care of my table. So definitely they're not lacking in service. Around 12 or 1230 we noticed some commotion at the bar. Much to our surprise, your "new manager" was causing quite the issue with his boyfriend. Earlier in the night, he seemed to be actually managing the bar, however, at this time he was what seemed to be belligerent drunk. This went on for some time, even continuing out to the patio with customers trying to end the chaos. He was cussing, yelling at his boyfriend and demanding the Bartender serve him another drink. Once his boyfriend, was able to get him to leave, we even witnessed him punching a chair on his way out of the bar! I don't know the owners of this bar. I think they would like to know what happens when they are not there. This place used to be a great place to hang out with family and friends. This is not the first time we've witnessed drunk behavior from this manager. I have to say,, your Bar has a couple really good bartenders. And that is a reason we continue to come back. Which in this day and age of throw away customers and compliments means a lot. I will definitely be coming back to this. Black Bear Diner and I have upgraded my review to a solid 4! Wow. That was underwhelming. I like Black Bear diner, I've been going to them for a long time, and as I was heading back to Las Vegas I thought I would stop here and grab a bite to eat as I have always had a great experience there. Well this time, it was an exception to the rule. It was busy so I was not too concerned about the wait time, which was minimal, and they got me seated pretty quickly. Quickly. I like the little newspaper style menus as they were fun to look at and interesting to read while you waited for your server. I already knew I was going to get the mini volcano, as it just sounded like the perfect combination of stuff for me to eat for breakfast. The waitress came by, really didn't look at me, which was odd. And went back to put it in. She came back with my coffee and said the order was in. Should only be a moment. This was great news cuz I was ready to eat and get back on the road. The food came to the table and it looked appetizing enough, they had the two pancakes and my fried egg on top and a piece of bacon and a link of sausage. Flanking the pancakes with a nice garnish of an orange slice on a lettuce bed. Here's the problem. Everything was lukewarm now it did come out pretty fast which was surprising to me that it wasn't really hot. But literally everything on the plate felt like it was sitting in a dish in the back with a warmer waiting just to be built. The pancakes there are usually really good this time. They were terrible. I was very very sad about this cuz I really like their pancakes a lot. The egg was cooked well but again it was lukewarm at best. Same with the sausage and the bacon. The sadder thing was the flavor just wasn't there. Normally they have some personality to it, but these felt contrived and run of the mill. Now. I don't know if they, like Everyone else is having to downgrade and downsize because of the cost of everything, but whatever it was it was not working for me. Again, I will say that I like Black Bear Diners but the one in Barstow I will be avoiding every time I drive through. This is sad, and I hope that someone in corporate reads this because it would be great to have this restaurant be top notch when you're driving between Orange county and Las Vegas or vice versa. Bottom line? I seriously doubt that I'll ever come back here. Which is a bummer, because I am a big fan of this particular chain. There are plenty of other great eating establishments in the Barstow area. So this one I would kind of drive past. ************* Response to Black Bear Diner Corporate Thank you for your heartfelt response. In fact, it was one of the nicest chat GPT responses I've read this week. At least you got my name in there which was a nice touch and made it feel more personal, however, when you forget to put your email in there for me to respond to, that leads me to believe you really don't care. Thank you for the response albeit a very perfunctory one.
