A secondary proof of residence is ONLY when buying a hand gun in California. Not a rifle. But the owner had a hissy fit when I tried to prove it using his own rules and regs from his copy of the DOJ rules. He refused to read the next paragraph where it clear states my point. I started talking with Jim one day because I wanted to pick his brain about 1911s and ended-up booking a lesson. He was great at figuring-out quickly what I already knew and was comfortable with, and where I needed new instruction. At the range, he had me shoot a couple of different 1911 designs, as well as a couple of other firearms chambered in the same caliber, so I could get a feel for what I like. My heart was still set on a 1911, though I left thinking about a couple of potential future buys that wouldn't have occurred to me otherwise. After we finished at the range, he walked me through all the options I had at the shop and helped me pick out my first gun. Jim also introduced me to his partner Aidan, who was really great at helping me to get started stocking up on ammo to learn with as affordably as possible. I've already made another appointment for some follow-up instruction after I do a little practice to lock-in what he taught me. If I could afford to, I'd sign up to learn just about anything Jim or Aidan had to teach me. They've both been a great resource to help me get off the ground with shooting.
