Our return to Calfkiller couldn't have been better. Honestly the term "hidden gem" these days is overused but this venue merits it !! We stopped in on a Friday afternoon and had pints of the Special Kind of Evil, a hoppy IPA style pour and the All Hallows Ale, a riff on a porter. Porters aren't my thing but this was really good with all sorts of spice - cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, etc. The IPA was a nice balance between a regular one on the hoppy side and a more Imperial style - ABV landed between 6 and 7%. The atmosphere here is just something special - it reminds me more of an English pub, where friends hang out together every day to catch up and fraternize with their neighbors. And the service is both knowledgeable and generally friendly, emphasis on genuine. Oh and their merch! Not your normal merch! A lot of it is handcrafted - really nicely done leather items, hand crafted. I really wish I could pick this place up and take it home with me to Ohio! Very unique and look forward to a return visit on our next trip to Tennessee. As the sign says: "Brewed Free of the Tyranny of Stylistic Oppression" Live on Calfkiller! Loved this eclectic craft brewery! Super cozy with lots of outdoor seating and games. Dog friendly! They have a couple of fire pits as well. Beer was good, menu was limited, but I enjoyed the Sergio's Ole Evil-Ass Devil Bullshit Ale. Super friendly staff that were very helpful with samples and recommendations on what to drink. Let me just say amazing! We came for the coffee but did enjoy some samples of four different artisan beers. Definitely will be back. The young lady behind the bar is very knowledgeable so feel free to ask questions. Loved the outdoor seating area where you can just take a cold glass of brew or a hot coffee to enjoy in the middle of nature. This place is of the beaten path so grab that address and plug it into your GPS and have a nice drive. They do have a variety of merch from mugs, shirts, blankets and assorted items. I'm a patch collect for my denim jacket and yes they had them! I did notice an array of homemade soaps, lip balms and oils. If you are not accustomed to stronger aromas then it may take you by surprise. I'm very sensitive to smells but found it pleasent. We were advised it's best to call and make sure the coffee is available. The guy hand roasts the coffee beans right out back over an open flame! They can grind them there for you but I'd suggest getting your own grinder so you can enjoy that fresh unlocked goodness with every brew read more

My father in Law has been dying for me to stop in here with him. While we were in town for the holidays, we stopped by for a drink When we walked in, we were greeted with a warm welcome. They asked us right away if we had been there before. It was my first time so they walked us through a taster of each of the beers that they had on tap. With each tasting, they told us about what to expect from the beer. It was very nice to figure out what we wanted to try. AfTer the samples, I grabbed a pint of their brown recluse. It was a very well balanced beer that was super smooth. I could drink this all day. While enjoying our pints, we settled out in their front courtyard. It had ample seating and was a great spot to chill and hang out. Once we were done with our beer, we rushed inside to grab another because last call was coming up. I inquired about seeing the brewery and they welcomed us back. Once back there, we got to BS with one of the owners for about half an hour. Awesome bunch there. Had a great conversation while enjoying a nice cold beer inside the brewery. After we were done chatting, we got some growlers filled and check out their wares. They had everything from custom leather koozies to nice blankets and steins. I grab my growler for the road, a super nice, custom stein and a nice warm blanket for the wife. If you are thirsty for a beer, swing into this spot and grab a cold one. Come from the beer and enjoy everything about this spot. 10/10 can't wait to come back! read more

This is one of the most quaint taproom/beer gardens of any brewery that I've visited. It's not a very big place as the brewery itself is only slightly above microbrew status. They have a small indoor seating area at the bar with four or five stools shared with a smaller area for selling merch. If you're going to stay and enjoy a few pints, I'd recommend going outside to the front area and enjoy the nice porch and multiple seating areas. Today they had a fire going in the sunken pit which was nice while the temperatures were still below 50°. Now to the beer. As stated before it's not a large operation... it's a family run brewery by two brothers and their spouses and possibly a few more employees... Thus, Calfkiller brews what they want as they want. Today on tap they had Pine Devine, The Grass Roots Ale, The Brown Recluse, and The Calfkiller Deadhorse. I was hoping they'd have a bit more selection as they have several listed as mainstays or on perpetual rotation but only the Grass Roots was available. It seems they only have four taps at any time so you may want to check what they're serving before making the trek out. I was glad to get to try a few new ones but would've loved to had a few more. Overall, each beer was good but nothing was spectacular. The fun descriptions on the website may be a little exaggerated as the beer fell slightly short of expectations. That's not say anything was bad... just not as great as I had hoped. We'll definitely make another trip out in the future to try a few more once the selection changes!!! read more

What a great brewery! We came here for a tour and tasting back in February and we'll definitely be back. The owners and all the workers are great people with great senses of humor and it was one of the most fun brewery tours I've been on. The beer they have is great and they make a ton of varied styles, which is always a plus. We didn't get one, but growler fills are ridiculously cheap and it's just an overall awesome place. First of all the founders/owners are great group of people. I went to high school with a couple of them and I must say that they haven't let all the deserved success go to their heads. The brewery is amazing and fits perfectly off of River Road along the Calfkiller River. The Tours are fun and informative, plus you get to sample! I am a picky beer drinker, but every brew I have tried out of the CBC, I have genuinely enjoyed. If you are near or far, it is worth the drive to experience this great local brewery. read more

If you own a motorcycle and love a well crafted beer... why the hell aren't you there now!! It's a beautiful ride from Nashville (or any direction really) to Sparta! Yes, those that know me know the temptation to kick shit over and yell "THIS IS SPARTA!!!" Is strong, but I resist in respect for a great place with a fun staff. The indoor space is an all wood wonderland for the eyes, the outside, a chicken roaming, beer drinking oasis! Great shady patio areas that make you feel like you are drinking in the backyard of a rich friend instead of a brewery. Oh did I mention the friendly fowl? As if kickin back on a nice southern day wasn't enough to de-stress your work a week wage slave self, sip an incredibly crafted brew and watch perfectly plumaged party partridges parade around the yard. None of the 5 star reviews do this brewery justice. First you'll read about how the brewery is made from salvaged materials 100%. When you arrive, you'll discover the many layers of quirky middle Tennessee freedom. The freedom to make amazing craft beers, all while allowing random customers to come in and talk your ear off. Chat about the beer, the equipment, stand their during the mash while fermenters are cycle cleaned and every piece of hardware goes through by my count a 4 steps process that always includes 100% equipment disassembly and sanitation. It is impressive the AdHD that takes. Then you can enjoy the quirkiness of no pints on draft. Growlers and tasters. But the trick and gift of love is you'll be granted a 6oz? Taster sample of everything on tap. Borrow a growler and fill 2 pints for $5, that's $2.50 a pint. Better yet, spent the extra $5 each time and walk away with 4 or more growlers. Then begin your scavenger hunt. First up Cliff Williams from AC/DC if you are lucky. Then find the porcelain spice grinder next to the Constitution on the wall somewhere. What's in that skull near the bar? Howany different bar stools are there? Count the kegs, distance of HLT to bathroom in meters, find the keg washer. Actually wash a keg, who knows what might be allowed among friends. Because that is what you are at Calfkiller. But really, super nice guys and gals in the brewery, very good beer from Sergio's Ole Evil-ass Devil bitch ale (pale, wheat, oats, honey, hoppy slight, yummy), scorned hooker, the neighbor J. henry ale, simple stout, and Theoretical Ales bye the bottled sour. A store full of merch, both handmade and larger qty. But overall ikagine going to your cousins in the country and you are treated like its a lazy Sunday afternoon Tennessee sippin hour.
