When students in your child's class reach out to you (the parent) disrespectfully and under assumed names (Demon S). This is a clear indicator that the school does not have things under control. Worst school ever. You can tell by the constant bickering and pettiness of the staff. Its more like a prison than a school. The staff turnover when my daughter attended was high. A well established group of dedicated teachers, therapists, staff and administrators. A place for students who are welcomed and who are truly understood. Flexibility seems to be incorporated into this institution that demonstrates honest trustworthy care, academic integrity, empathy, compassion and accountability. An absolute sham. A relative just (shockingly!) graduated from this "school." Calais ignored the fact that the child missed in upwards of 50% attendance at the previous high school (for 3 years in a row) and didn't require the child to make up any of the work. The child's attendance was also abysmal at Calais, but tolerated. Every red flag that pointed toward an abusive/neglectful home life was ignored. They are only interested in $, not the welfare of their students. They had a chance to save that kid and didn't lift a finger to do it. Avoid! read more

I've been at Calais for 2 years and I hated it! I was there from September 2017-June 2019. The 1st year seemed nice but the 2nd year was a living hell. The teachers would treat me like a child and I was bullied a lot and depressed. I had to have speech and OT and I was given a chart for a 2nd grader saying "Nelly's class goals" by my speech teacher and I'd be forced to mask my autism by looking directly at people while speaking which is hard to do because of my autism. I have really bad sensory issues and one of the staff members tried to "fix" me by giving me exposure therapy by forcing me to listen to a sound that I hate over and over until I completely masked my sensory discomfort. I had a "friend" there who betrayed my trust and got me in trouble all the time. She spread false rumors about me that I drew pictures of other students that I NEVER even drew and got almost the whole school to gang up on me. She and her friends would laugh at me, talk trash about me behind my back, and would possibly call me names. Calais even has a lot of drama because my counselor confiscated my friend's phones and looked at all their texts which is a violation of our privacy, and even goes too far by printing out their texts. They would make such a big deal out of nothing! The worst person was my counselor there for the high school students. She verbally abused me and didnt understand my special needs and would always put me down. She'd accuse me blocking out the world, being rude, and not listening. Almost everyday, she'd call my mother complaining about me and saying bad things about me behind my back. The teachers and counselors do nothing to stop bullying. They let it happen until the child has to leave. The staff even walks around with walkie-talkies like it's a jail! I've never been to a school where the staff has walkie-talkies. My counselor and the other counselors would lie a lot and say that they'll "handle" the bullying but they really don't because obviously they don't care. They love these manipulative bullies because they make themselves look innocent around adults so they don't get in trouble. They even take sides by saying that these bullies are "sincere" when they are just a bunch of spoiled brats. The staff there even called me Nell instead of Nelly and most of the papers said Nell on them which really made me furious. The school is also rule-oriented because they have so many strict rules like "no pictures of other students" "no phones in summer school ALL DAY" and the bathroom doors were always locked and if I couldn't wait any longer, I'd have a big accident. This is one of the worst schools and DO NOT send them here!!! This place is a living hell and this school will ruin their lives and scar them for life. It doesn't encourage students and it makes them feel bad about themselves and mask their autism. I used be very skinny but from so much stress from being in this school, I drastically gained weight in May 2019 and gained 40 pounds in 7 months, from May-December 2019, all because of this school. I started losing that excess weight in August 2022. This school is so messed up and needs to be shut down for good and that's one of my wishes!! Now I'm in another special needs school and it is way better than Calais! I started in September 2019 and I'm going onto my 5th year there and will be graduating there in June. The students and staff members are so much nicer and there's a lot more peace and fun events and the rules are a lot less strict. I definitely don't recommend Calais based on my experience. This is one of the worst schools for neurodivergent people! This is America and I'm entitled to have freedom of speech because that's what America is all about! read more
