    Cake heaven!!!
    Anthony M.

We are in a mission to make a Tangled Tower Cake...we found Cakewalk on Yelp and headed out. It felt like a road trip from downtown Chicago!!! We pulled up and it was closed. As I read the sign I learned they were on vacation. I turned to my wife and said, "Lucy...you've got some explainin' to do!" no I didn't say that but I sure thought it. Just then the owner Lori came and opened the door. She said that they were closed but invited me in to look around. That is called Customer Service and deserves 5 Stars!!! Wow a business owner who cares!!! Lori and I talked about my research on making a cake tower and we came up with some good ideas. She was so helpful. I bought edible paint, brushes and other things to start my project. (This is my wives fault because she thinks I can build it...and I've gotta accept the challenge.) My wife also got cool things to make little mini flowers for her cupcakes...I'm also gonna need flowers for my tower too. So now we start building!!! The store was fun and there were so many things to see. Thanks Lori for opening your doors and letting us shop!!! Lori also gave us directions to see the old historic houses and the castle at 103rd street. She is also a great tour guide too. She takes pride in her business and the area she is from!!! I think she needs to start a cupcake walking tour!!! Thanks again Lori!!!

A traveling salesman is driving down an old country road one evening when his car breaks down. He walks to a nearby farmhouse and asks if he can stay the night before going to get help the next morning. The kindly farmer tells him he can stay, on the condition that he does not touch any of the extremely delicious cupcakes that he had just finished baking earlier in the day. In the middle of the night, the salesman wakes up hungry, walks down into the kitchen and eats all the cupcakes. The cupcakes totally let him too, because cupcakes are sluts like that. *Thanks to Brodie Brohkie for that. :) I was at Cakewalk for a cupcake decorating class (yay Yelpppp) with Lori, who is warm and friendly, and came back to buy some supplies once I was inspired. They have everything! Fillings, melting chocolate, guava essence, whatever else you need to bake amazingness. I made some cake pops for Food Friday at work today (it is what it is.) and I made lavender vanilla and then grapefruit guava. Amazing. Anything you need and more, plus classes! I wish it weren't so far... but it's probably for the best.

The cupcakes I got to decorate at Cakewalk with Lori.

He was easy to contact and answered my multiple questions prior to the event day. On the day of the dinner, he showed up promptly and the dinner left every one of us stuffed until the next day! The dishes he created were both familiar and new (for example, our group had never had fried anchovies before). He was pleasant in conversation the entire time. Chef Andrew truly was a pleasure to work with and I will certainly recommend him for any private event you may have in the future.

I've always said if I won the lotto I'd hire 2 people immediately:…read more1) a hair stylist to come to my home to blow-dry and style my crazy curls daily 2) a personal chef While I did win $7 in the lotto a few weeks ago (or most like lost $3) it's not quite enough to cover either of those splurges. However, it turns out that you don't need to win the lotto to hire a personal chef. You just need to know Andrew from Crying Onion. I'm absolutely hopeless in the kitchen...so hopeless that I've even managed to mess up a frozen pizza just by sticking it in the oven. My husband and I used to eat out and order in most nights, but that became more difficult after having our daughter. For awhile we tried Meez Meals*, which is basically healthy cooking for dummies. I was a huge fan for 6 months, but between work and motherhood found myself not having time for the very little time it takes to cook the meal and clean it up. And so I searched the millions of reviews on Yelp for some sort of cooking service that would be affordable and healthy.... I came across Crying Onion's reviews during my research. I got hungry just reading the reviews, but noticed Andrew's business was more for dinner parties and catering. I was about to give up and resort to eating cereal for the rest of my life when I checked out Crying Onion's website and noticed they offer vacuum sealed ready-to-heat meals. I very eagerly reached out to Andrew within minutes to get more information: * How the process works: He has a long list of entrees that covers all the food groups, but is open to other ideas as well. * The cost: Depends on the meal, but I've found most of my meals come to $11-12 for 1 meal (order for 2 to keep the costs down). The portions are pretty big so I usually end up eating the leftovers for lunch the next day. Andrew also requires an order of $225 for delivery, which takes up most of the room in my freezer, but not a huge deal since I don't make it to the grocery store too often. * The timing: Andrew needs about a week to prepare everything and then drops it all off ready to stick in the freezer. I've gotten 2 deliveries from Andrew (both enough for about 3 weeks) and I'm a huge fan. It now takes me no more than 3 minutes to "whip up" one of his meals and there's absolutely no clean-up involved. Most importantly the meals are very tasty! I haven't "cried" (pun intended) over a Crying Onion meal yet, but absolute favorites include the butternut squash pasta, kale and soba noodles, and mushroom pizza. I also travel frequently for work so my husband (who's even more pathetic in the kitchen than I am) is happy to have a meal that he can easily defrost and heat up in 3 minutes. Now if only Andrew styled hair...I'd be one happy girl. * http://www.yelp.com/biz/meez-meals-chicago#hrid:eZGPQX1l3b5jCP1GhVRKGA

I have never taken a cooking class before so I didn't know what to expect, but this was amazing!…read moreRanjana and her husband welcomed us into their home. They were both so inviting and kind. Before arriving, we had picked out the recipes we wanted to cook. Ranjana then prints out those recipes so we can take notes as we go and can take the recipes home. Since Covid, she is only offering private classes (instead of big group classes) so it was just the two of us for the cooking class. We made SO much food and it all came out amazing. Every dish we made was vegetarian, too! We had mango lassi, daal, saag paneer, samosas, halwa and more. I left feeling so full! Ranjana went above and beyond to teach us cooking tips and teach us about the ingredients we were using. We also learned about all the amazing work she has done throughout Chicago and some history of their neighborhood. Their house is easy to get to and has parking right out front. They can give you a parking permit for your car. If you enjoy the class and want to be able to recreate dishes at home, Ranjana sells a spice kit you can purchase. I highly recommend taking this class!

I can't speak highly enough of her and family. These classes were more than a cooking lessons, it's an experience in hospitality. Located in Jackson Park right off LSD you will have no trouble getting there, ample parking also right out in front. A beautiful area and they have a lovely home, make sure to have Vijay, her husband tell you about the area and their home. You will find him just as warm and personable as her, he is also an actor and master gardener and many of the vegetables and herbs we cooked with were fresh from their garden. She is an accomplished cook as well as other professions, some humanitarian. Be prepared to share, you're in their home and in addition to cooking, it's a personal experience. Now to the classes, she will introduce you to the spices, you get to smell and taste them, she will educate you on where they came from and the elements of what makes a dish come together, and where you can improvise, for instance for a chutney, don't have a banana? You can use apple instead. You will also get to participate, be prepared to slice, blend, stir, fry and knead dough. After all how else are you going to learn? She's a patient teacher, it took me a bit to get the creases correct on a samosa. It can be a bit overwhelming, as anything new is and several dishes may be happening at the same time, however it all comes together and will make sense. Nothing short of amazing. Come hungry, you get to eat what you made, you will be full. You also get to take home the recipes of what you made. She also does tours of Devon Ave., I'm planning to take one in the future. Thank you Ranjana for sharing the knowledge and the warm welcome into your home.
