Cake decorating aftermath.
Ben B.

As a birthday treat, my girl took me here to learn how to decorate my own birthday cake. A sweet gesture. Be forewarned that Cakewalk Chicago isn't in the greatest neighborhood. I mean, I like abandoned factories and adjacent train tracks as much as the next guy, but it's very outskirts-y. Also, Cakewalk is basically in a shack. It's a run-down old house. Up front is a room filled with cookie cutters, cake decorating accessories and other baking supplies. On the day I arrived a trio of small tables were set up for our class. God forbid you have to use the bathroom in the back. This place barely has running water, which makes you kind of worry about the fact that they're handling actual food here. Despite those major setbacks, the class itself was fun. Chef Lori will give you a quick & dirty tutorial on how to decorate a cake like a pro. Whether your cake comes out looking like a pro did it... that's up to your skill. It was a fun couple of hours, and it was nice to take home an edible souvenir. Oh, and it was fun to have the added floor show of Lori browbeating her husband every now and then. He'd come up to start asking her a question and she'd answer before he'd finish speaking. And then he'd have to ask his actual question again and she acted annoyed. Good times! If you want to learn something fun in a building that should be condemned, Cakewalk Chicago is for you!

Cake heaven!!!

We are in a mission to make a Tangled Tower Cake...we found Cakewalk on Yelp and headed out. It felt like a road trip from downtown Chicago!!! We pulled up and it was closed. As I read the sign I learned they were on vacation. I turned to my wife and said, "Lucy...you've got some explainin' to do!" no I didn't say that but I sure thought it. Just then the owner Lori came and opened the door. She said that they were closed but invited me in to look around. That is called Customer Service and deserves 5 Stars!!! Wow a business owner who cares!!! Lori and I talked about my research on making a cake tower and we came up with some good ideas. She was so helpful. I bought edible paint, brushes and other things to start my project. (This is my wives fault because she thinks I can build it...and I've gotta accept the challenge.) My wife also got cool things to make little mini flowers for her cupcakes...I'm also gonna need flowers for my tower too. So now we start building!!! The store was fun and there were so many things to see. Thanks Lori for opening your doors and letting us shop!!! Lori also gave us directions to see the old historic houses and the castle at 103rd street. She is also a great tour guide too. She takes pride in her business and the area she is from!!! I think she needs to start a cupcake walking tour!!! Thanks again Lori!!!

Luckily, I went with a big group and got to try and number of things off the menu. I will point out that some things listed on the menu was not available such as their Lobster Bisque & the Caesar salad. The food was phenomenal. It did take about 30 - 40 mins for our food to come out but I'm assuming that's because it was made fresh. There was only one worker & bartender working at the time which is fine because it wasn't that crowded but the customer service was a little slow. Plenty of space for seating (tables and booths). This place is perfect for Sunday brunch or dinner! Lastly, I love that it's located in Blue Island!

Thank you Deja, our waiter for the recommendation. My friends had the steak frites and the steak was delicious! Moist for sure. I didn't try the wings but she said they were good. Looking forward to going back for brunch!

What a wonderful experience, what a great time!…read more My company/department for work had a team meet-up. Often times we do activities. And thhe activity thisntime was baking cookies at Cooking with Curves! This is a very adorable location. The owner and staff were very kind and accommodating. There was about 12 or 13 of us. Cookie selected to be baked: Strawberry Lemon(with buttercream). It was a nice time from start to finish. Everything we could need to create the cookies was made available to us. The owner walked us through everything step by step. When it was time to mix, there were 3 hand mixers we used one at a time. The process was enjoyable. Simple cookie baking. As we waited for the cookies to bake, we playes games: Baking/cookies scrambled (were you figure out what words the letters create). Cookie/baking bingo (yell out COOKIE) And lastly Baking trivia. The time zoomed by as we played and waited. After the cookies were done, they cooled off, and we engaged each other and cleaned up. Soon we were icing our cookies with the buttercream we created. Some enjoyed at the location. I waited to get home. This was a great interactive meet up. Fun, easy and yummy! Kudos to the owner and her team for making the time and space wonderful. They have group rates, weekend fun for all,and even kids classes. Thanks again for a sweet time in baking! And just like always, you don't have to believe me, GO GET YOU SOME!

The Chef and the Baker DID THAT!…read more Excellent presentation & the food was mmmm....mmmmm.....good! ## The Chef and the Baker -- A Chicago Catering Gem That Delivered on Every Level! **When I tell you The Chef and the Baker understood the assignment... THEY UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT!** While planning a special convening of Chicago's philanthropic and community leaders at the historic **Blackstone Branch Library**, I was intentional about finding a local, Black-owned catering business to support. I actually discovered **The Chef and the Baker** by asking ChatGPT for recommendations for Black-owned caterers near the library. They were one of the few that popped up! After visiting their website, exploring their menu, and reading the wonderful reviews, I had a feeling they would be the perfect fit. And BOY, was I right! Our gathering brought together an impressive group of community leaders, CEOs, vice presidents, and professionals in Chicago's philanthropic space. We needed a menu that would appeal to a variety of tastes and dietary preferences. I'm vegetarian, and we also had vegan guests, so flexibility, freshness, and flavor were important. **Well, let me tell you... THEY CAME THROUGH!** Let's talk about the FOOD! - **Rosemary Lemonade:** Refreshing, delicious, and such a lovely touch! - **Assorted Wrap Sandwiches:** Something for everyone! The Southwest Wrap was MY personal favorite! - **Potato Leek Soup:** Absolutely delicious! - **Macaroni & Cheese:** OOOH-WEEE! That's all I'm going to say! - **Guacamole:** YES, PLEASE! So fresh and flavorful! - **Ranch & Balsamic Dressings:** I don't know if they were homemade, but they certainly tasted like it! - **Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies:** Now THIS was a surprise! You honestly couldn't even tell they were vegan. Delicious! And it wasn't just the food. From the assorted chips to the beautiful presentation, everything was thoughtful and well executed. Their team arrived ON TIME, was professional, personable, accommodating, and an absolute pleasure to work with. Even when we made a few adjustments to our menu, they handled everything with grace and flexibility. **The entire experience was TOP TIER!** What made this experience even more special was introducing The Chef and the Baker to our Chicago host committee and philanthropic leaders. Many of our guests had never heard of them before. **WELL, THEY KNOW THEM NOW!** Let's just say The Chef and the Baker walked away with some brand-new fans, followers, and, I suspect, future customers! And can we also celebrate that this is a **Black-owned, husband-and-wife business**? We LOVE to see it! Supporting Black entrepreneurship, especially businesses rooted in community, makes experiences like this even more meaningful. To **The Chef and the Baker**, THANK YOU for helping us create such a wonderful experience at the Blackstone Branch Library. Your food, professionalism, hospitality, and attention to detail did not go unnoticed. **You haven't heard the last from us!** Our Chicago Host Committee and I look forward to working with you again. If you're in Chicago and looking for a caterer who delivers exceptional food, excellent service, and a little extra LOVE in everything they do, look no further! **The Chef and the Baker -- you have officially earned your flowers! ** With appreciation from a very happy customer! \#SupportBlackOwnedBusinesses #TheChefAndTheBaker #ChicagoCatering #BlackOwnedChicago #BlackExcellence #ChicagoPhilanthropy #SupportLocalBusinesses

My friends and I are three high school seniors completing a…read morecapstone project on cultural enclaves in Chicago, and we stumbled upon Ranjana's Indian Cooking Classes -- having visited Little India and being devoted eaters of Indian food, we were naturally interested and emailed Ranjana to set up a date. First, after hearing that we were students, Ranjana very kindly offered a student discount on an already well-priced class, which was incredibly sweet of her. We chose a North Indian menu, and we were delighted by how many delicious options there were for such a low price: we got to make masala chai, imli and coriander chutneys, samosas, roti, paratha, papad, pepper jalfarezi, eggplant curry, pulav, paneer, tofu curry, and kaju katli (a tasty cashew dessert that I will be trying to make at home!). The experience was intimate, as it was hosted in Ranjana's home, and we really enjoyed getting to learn about the history of her neighborhood, about her family (seriously, a family of changemakers and geniuses), and especially about the significance behind and cultural context of the ingredients we were using and the dishes we were eating. She is patient, funny, and not scared of hot things! Her house is full of art, music, and culture. It is clear she cares deeply about what she does, be it her advocacy as LGBTQ+ ally and former executive director of Asian domestic violence shelter Apna Ghar, or teaching this wonderful class and engaging with her students. And the food... the BEST samosas I have ever had, no joke. I've never had something so flavorful and crisp and just the right bit of greasy from a restaurant. And the roti with the pulav and an array of vegetables with a nice cold glass of water was just fantastic. As my friend said, you might not think, as a meat-eater, that you can have a full and truly nourishing meal without meat. But Ranjana's classes will dispel your beliefs: I left her house stuffed, warm, and smelling like the all the aromatic spices of her kitchen. Such a wonderful experience and educational where you wouldn't expect it. I cannot recommend this enough! - Daniel, Alexa, Lia

Every dish we made was vegetarian, too! We had mango lassi, daal, saag paneer, samosas, halwa and more. I left feeling so full! Ranjana went above and beyond to teach us cooking tips and teach us about the ingredients we were using. We also learned about all the amazing work she has done throughout Chicago and some history of their neighborhood. Their house is easy to get to and has parking right out front. They can give you a parking permit for your car. If you enjoy the class and want to be able to recreate dishes at home, Ranjana sells a spice kit you can purchase. I highly recommend taking this class!
