If you like regular sized, flavorless cupcakes with more icing on top than there actually is cake AND being charged way too much money for it, then Cake in a Cup is the place for you! Yes, this store won Cupcake Wars. Have any of you who have proclaimed that in your reviews ever actually seen the show? It's pretty much a war of attrition versus a true battle of skill. Watch one of the weirder episodes where bakers have to figure out how to incorporate jalapeños, oysters, or avocados into a cupcake. (These were all in actual episodes.) Just because some other poor bakers couldn't nail down a gravy and stuffing cupcake (Christmas episode) doesn't mean the winning team has the best tasting cupcakes. Seriously people, get over that hype. That being said, I wanted to like Cake in a Cup. I've been there a few times to see what everyone else was talking about. I've had many cupcakes from them...cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate, and even the most overhyped flavor of overhyped dessert in history, the red velvet cupcake. I wasn't impressed with any of them. Peanut butter chocolate desserts of any kind usually speak for themselves when it comes to bold flavor, but not Cake in a Cup's. I could tell that the specific flavors were only mildly present in each cupcake, but it took a backseat to the disgustingly sweet mountain of icing on top and so-so cake. I scraped off most of my icing on each cupcake, which doesn't leave you with much flavor. When you're charging $2.50 plus tax for one regular sized cupcake, it should be super moist, bursting with flavor, and have my inner fat kid wanting to buy out the whole display case. Cake in a Cup does none of these things for me. (To be honest, and I hate to say it, but Costco (seasonally) has better red velvet and carrot cake cupcakes, which are about 4 times the size and about $1 each. They're so big, I usually cut them into halves or thirds and make several desserts out of them.) I do want to echo other reviewers by saying that yes, the Cake in a Cup staff is very friendly, and when the owners are working the counter, you can tell they love what they do. Past that, there's not much to talk about. Don't get me wrong...I always value service highly, but when then service is just operating a cash register and handing me my order, that leaves the other 90% to the product, which is easily below average at this cupcakery. read more

After reading the positive reviews, I was really excited to check this place out. I have driven past many times, but they are usually closed. Finally, I found them open and stopped in. I chose a red velvet and my wife had a dark bottom chocolate cupcake. We were both sort of unimpressed. I mean they were good, but not for the price. Hers was even a little dry. I recently moved here from Los Angeles where there are gourmet cupcake shops on every block. I wasn't expecting to find one in Toledo but when my mom recently ordered me some for my birthday I was pleasantly surprised at how DELICIOUS they were!!!!! They frosting is to die for and the cake is amazing!!! Beats a lot of cupcakes I have tried in LA!! I would recommend the Hostess with the mostess cupcake, the Snickerdoodle, and the Devil wears Prada!! But I imagine they are all wonderful, can't wait to try them all!!! read more

Pros: Wonderful, friendly staff. Very clean place. Cupcakes lovely to look at. Red velvet is awesome. They have a banana one that is #1 for me, but seldom have it. I'm no food expert nor claim to be, but to say Cake in a Cup's cupcake are tasteless? You clearly have no taste buds. These cup cakes are amazing!! To compare them to grocery store cupcakes? I'm almost offended for them. NOT EVEN CLOSE! People who complain let the cost affect the taste. I have no issues with their prices and have already booked them for my wedding. Their flavors are always changing/rotating. I will admit that the regular sized cupcakes do have more icing than I would need, but I just take a little bit off. OMG, my aunt told me about this place and I was glad I visited because it was heaven. The place is small and quaint. They offer sample sizes of the flavors of the day. I was almost ashamed when i sampled every flavor they had, and even more ashamed that i bought 6 of the full size cupcakes and ate them myself... This place maybe small but it packs a big punch. The snickerdoodle, chocolate, vanilla, the devil wears prada... OMG... The frosting is the best, i feel like a kid everytime i have their cupcakes because i eat the frosting first and then the cake... Amazing cupcakes!!! I had the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting - it was amazing and my dad had the same. He was equally impressed. My daughter had the Neapolitan and said it was the best cupcake she ever had. Also had a peanut butter chocolate - if you love peanut butter and chocolate this is the cupcake for you!!! $3 each is a little expensive but reasonable for such an amazing cupcake and a special treat. I was waiting for my car to be repaired down the street and was checking out the area. I decided to stop and give this place a try. When I walked in, it was dark, like the lights weren't on. I noticed a girl behind the counter and one in back making cupcakes. I was a bit surprised she didn't acknowledge me when I walked in, since I was the only customer in the shop. I walked up to the case and noticed about 6 different types of cupcakes. Just then, about 2-3 minutes after I walked in, the one girl said hello. I asked if those were the only flavors they had and she said for today yes. Which I took to assume there are different flavors every day. I told her it was my first time stopping in and she showed me a cake plate filled with with mini cupcakes for samples. I tried a mini peanut butter banana with honey and buttercream frosting. I was pretty disappointed in how dry the cake part was. I actually didn't even really want to purchase one after the sample, but thought, maybe it was dry because it had been out for a little while. So I decided to get a traditional birthday cake cupcake with green buttercream frosting. I waited until I got home to try it, I will say, the frosting is amazing! But again, the cake part is dry. What a disappointment. And she put my cupcake in a bag. Who does that? Cupcakes need special containers so they don't get smushed, well, it got smushed, just like one would think. I have been here several times in the past year. All my friends absolutely love the cupcakes. I have had a few good ones, but some of the cakes are way to sweet with tons of frosting. And yes, I love sweets and cakes. I have also experienced questionable customer service here. One occassion, with my family, the girl at the counter did not tell us they had a leftover special. We found out after we ordered and a single person came in. The kids would have loved to enjoy the leftover special. And I felt I just paid a ton of money for a few cupcakes and maybe I didnt look the right part to deserve the leftover special. I also have experienced a crowded store and slow service. I think for the price, I would rather go down to Fresh Market where the bakery ladies are always so friendly to my family. read more

I actually disagree with the reviews I have read thus far, my experience was quite different than others it seems. I ordered a couple different flavors of cupcakes for my sisters birthday celebration in August PBJ and red velvet and I thought the cake itself was very dry, the frosting made the entire cupcake, honestly but still only an average cupcake. The customer service skills of the staff is poor at best, I called ahead to find out availability of flavors and talked to one of the owners who was very rude and short with me on the phone, it felt like I was almost a bother! When we went to purchase the cupcakes at the store we were treated just as terrible shocking really considering how successful this business has become. I guess one thing never to forget......without customers like me left with a bad impression, your business would not be a success without customer sales! read more

Hands down best cupcakes in Toledo, probably America. The frosting is DELICIOUS- and there is an insane amount (in a good way). Pretty expensive, but worth every penny. Plus the workers are nice, service is great, and there are always very generous samples (think whole cupcakes). A great variety of flavors, my favorites are the classic vanilla with the colored buttercream frosting, and the red velvet. But there are always unique flavors to try too! Definitely give them a try. My only complaint would be that sometimes the cake itself is a bit dry, and again they are pretty expensive. read more

I loved my cupcake. I thought it tasted much better than grocery store cupcakes unlike most people seem to think. The frosting was the best part to me, and there was absolutely no way I would spend that much money on a cupcake if they used less frosting. The reason this place doesn't get more stars is because the prices are ridiculous. I think that the cupcakes should not be priced any higher than two dollars, but I'm not sure if that is possible. I've spent a lot of money here, this was one of my favorite places. However, after today I will NEVER spend another dollar here. I had a small request to add sprinkles on one cupcake for my 6 year, who was standing there with me. The cashier refused, I asked to speak to a manager, she called the owner who also refused to add sprinkles. If customers mean so little to this establishment that someone could not throw a few sprinkles on a cupcake, it says a lot about this business and is definitely not a place I want to give my business to any longer! My child stood there with a sad look on his face. Rather than appease a 6 yr old by doing something so simple as add a few sprinkles to one of the cupcakes, they accepted my return on all of the cupcakes I just purchased. I'm highly disappointed in the staff and the owners. After all the money, I've spent there, I feel cake in a cup basically had a screw you and your kid attitude. Omg! Best piece of cake ever! $2.50 sounded like a lot to me at first too but it is TOTALLY worth it. I had a devil wears prada and my husband had a pumpkin chocolate chip (which he generously let me taste) and they were both delicious. Instead of a predictable wedding cake, I offered my guests every flavor of cup cake that Cake in a Cup had made for that day. All of my guests raved at how good they were! It was easy to order and pay over the phone and they showed up on time to set up the cupcakes on tiers. Bravo! I had an idea of what flavors of theirs they had as I'd looked at the website before to see what they were doing. I'd heard so much about them on the radio and cupcake wars (which they won so can't be all bad right?) Dry, dry, dry!!! They were beautifully decorated but horribly DRY. I ordered them a week ahead for a Friday pick-up for my father-in-law's 80th birthday. I was unable to order his favorite flavor (strawberry) as it is only available on Thursday. The lemon barely had a lemon flavor to it - in fact, the family had mixed votes on which was the lemon and which was the vanilla. Both were as dry as dry can be. There were leftovers and nobody wanted a second one. Many were thrown out as they were inedible. I would not recommend...so sorry as I was so excited about serving these. :( read more

After watching this business on Cupcake Wars, I was so excited to try the cupcakes being that I am from the area. They looked amazing. I also looked up the reviews on here before going to the store. I am not sure what cupcakes everyone else tried, but these cupcakes were awful. We got the cupcakes at 3 o'clock so it wasn't like it was the end of the day. My husband and I got 3 different cupcakes to share (red velvet, pretty in pink, and the peanut butter cup). The red velvet and pretty in pink were extremely dry and the ratio of icing to cake was ridiculous. The worst part was...they didn't even taste good. The peanut butter cup cake was more moist as compared to the others, but this one had a different problem. The icing was awful! If you take the icing off, it is somewhat bearable but then it is just a plain chocolate cupcake. At $2.50 a piece, I would NOT recommend these cupcakes to anyone.
