Some plays bussa nova, some plays folk songs. I come here every morning in Lisbon to watch the sunrise while sipping my tea. This small spot is right in front of my hotel. In the afternoon and during sunset, the city below is painted with different scenes that enchant me all day long. To the left, there's a cafe, and on the right, there's a view of Tagus River. This is a popular site in Lisbon. It's a big plaza with lots of little shops and restaurants…read morenearby. Three sides of the square are surrounded with bright yellow walls/buildings, while the fourth side of the square is made up by the water! I think that's a cool feature! You enter it through a big, pretty stone arch, and in the very center of the plaza is a statue. When I went, I enjoyed hearing a man sing opera under the arch. It contributed to a nice atmosphere. It felt fitting. I came across this location more than once so it's relatively easy to get to depending on where you are/where you're going. I had sardines for the first time at a restaurant in the plaza, and I wish I could remember the name of the restaurant! They were so good!!! They had a nicer flavor than I expected- mild and salty with maybe a bit of sweetness too. Crispy thin texture on the outside, too. And much larger sized fish than I expected. I was lucky to be there during sardine season/festival, so I'm sure that helped.

We started at the top floor through a special exhibit which was beautiful, and then worked our way down. You'll pass penguins and waterfalls, you can go over a wooden bridge through a little tropical feeling forest, and onto the playful otters. Then you'll continue around passing the giant central tank. As you descend, you'll get additional looks at the tank and different viewpoints like watching the penguins dive below the water. This is the first aquarium to capture my son's delight, but I also think he's just turned the corner on appreciating animals (or at least sea life). Our toddler daughter also enjoyed it very much! We all did. We don't typically book into zoos or aquariums unless they are top in the world, and this aquarium was very highly rated, so I was very happy we came. It was a perfect attraction for our family, but I also would have been happy I came even if this was a trip without kids. With kids? A slam dunk. You can add a gondola ride onto your aquarium ticket which we did. We booked the roundtrip gondola and our kids enjoyed the experience. I wouldn't say it's a must do, but it's not terribly expensive and if you have kids, they'll like this experience too. If you're up for a packed day, you can do the science museum which is next door as well. I read it's a very interactive hands on museum but we had to get back that day. The aquarium is a half day experience. I think we there for 2.5 hours.

The Full-Day Best of Sintra and Cascais Small-Group Tour with Nunu was a great tour…read more Nunu was patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. He handled our tour with grace and professionalism! Starting out, we went to Sintra but unlike other tours we walked the grounds to get to Peña Palace vice getting dumped off with the herd at the main gate. A truly relaxing experience, the grounds were calm and peaceful, the walk was inclined but easy for a group of seasoned adults. The visit to the palace was vivid with color and informative. Next stop we visit the nearby town with ample time to catch lunch at one of many eateries and/or shop at the many stores. Be sure to get a Pastéis de Nata before you depart! A scenic drive through the hills as you travel to the furthest western point in the European Continent, this stop with the green hills, crashing waves, and lighthouse was amazing! A final drive to the beach line you will enter Cascais where you will have time to explore the tourist beach haven or visit the free museum on its history. Whether you want a good drink or another Pastéis de Nata you will enjoy the wind and the water in this town before ending back at you hotel or air BnB. A great trip to plan into you schedule and do ask for Nunu, he was the icing on the cake of this tour!

The trams and buses circle the plaza, the tourists are walking all through and there are restaurants all around. There is underground parking here and a public toilet. I suggest popping in to O Trevo for "bifana e cerveja" - it's a pork sandwich and a small beer. It was one of Anthony Bourdain's stops during his only visit to Lisbon.
