If you are wandering by this square around 10am, 11am, 2pm or 3pm you'll find it massively busy with tons of tourists, as this is the starting point for Sandemans Free walking tour of Lisbon. Our tour guide provided some history and a funny (maybe false?) story about Luís de Camões the statue and the person this square is named after. Basically he is considered the Shakespeare equivalent for the Portuguese language and travelled around the world to a lot of the Portuguese colonies in the 1500s. The funny story goes that his ship was attacked by pirates near Macau and he could either save his Chinese wife or the manuscript he was writing. Since the manuscript still exists, I guess we know the ending of the story! Yelp 184 / 2019

Praça Luís de Camões is not the biggest square in town, nor is it the prettiest, IMO, but throughout our visit (during Carnival), it sure was the liveliest. Lots of street performances, including music, dancers, those fake-statue people, and commercial promos with freebie giveaways. My guess is that the location of this square (in the Barrio Alto neighborhood, very close to the border with Baixa-Chaido), makes it a huge traffic-way for Lisbonites commuting from work neighborhood to home neighborhood, and tourists whose hotels and hotspots are all around, thus it's a great place to grab a lot of people's attention. Surprising to me, there is vert little public seating in this square, but people are content to hang out standing, gathering around performers, just hanging out. Personally, without benches, it didn't feel very relaxing to be there, as entertaining as it was. Lisbon is full of steep hills (stairs), and very few subway stops in the popular cultural areas, thus you walk nonstop all day, and I needed a bench to unwind. There are just a couple of cafes off of the square, and those (seated) people seemed much more reposed. Unfortunately, the standing crowds around the entertainers make it impossible for the people at cafe tables to really see any of the action. There is a cable car that stops on the square, as well as a bus stop. Lots of shopping in the Baixa direction of the square, and famous nata shop, Manteigaria, has a location on one corner of the square. Two nearby churches worth seeing, just off the square, are Basílica de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires and Igreja Nossa Senhora da Encarnação.

I am SO glad someone from our hostel took us here! Not only is the view absolutely amazing, but…read moreit's a perfect place to hang out with a couple of beers and enjoy the live music. Even though it was packed, everyone seemed to find a place to sit, perch, or dance, and there were just generally good vibes all the way around. Don't be surprised if you run into familiar faces! Sunset seems to be the most popular time to be there, so if you're looking to get a bit more space to sit or are with a larger group, definitely get there early. It got cooler at night, also, so you could always just layer up and bring a sweater with you. I would also recommend a mini stash of toilet paper/tissue and some hand sanitizer, as the washrooms are pretty gnarly if you plan on squatting :)

With a wide open concrete platform, it's a lot more laid back than the more crowded vista points at Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia in Alfama. I presume tourists are less inclined to scale the hillside streets that lead here because it definitely feels more like a locals' spot. Fortunately there's an adjacent kiosk cafe (Quiosque do Adamastor) should you need nourishment for your trekking efforts. It'll help make your climb down easier.
