Located in the basement of the Detroit Institute of the Arts, this beautiful cafe gives dinners the opportunity to eat tasty food in the presence of priceless works of art. What more could we ask for? They are open Wednesday through Friday from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm, Friday evening, 5pm - 9pm, and weekends from 11:30 am- 3 pm. Food is a great mix of American and ethnic dishes. You can get your meal made to order at one of the grills. There is also a great salad bar that is sufficient for a whole meal. The soups and chili are also excellent. They have a different hot entree every day which is paired with a choice of side dishes. They also have grilled chicken, salmon and burgers, plus chicken tenders, grilled veggies, panini and wrapped sandwiches. Grab a tray when you first come in and work your way through the buffet section. Salad is paid for by weight. All other dishes have a set price, although you can easily mix and match. I sometimes get a piece of salmon grilled and then add it to my salad after it has been weighed. Drinks and desserts are right before the registers. Pay the cashier (you'll get a discount if you're a musuem member) and then take your tray to a table to eat. If you want to visit the cafe and don't want to pay the $8 to get to the musuem, never fear! When you first enter the main doors, go to the desk on your left-hand side and tell them you'd like to come in to go to the cafe. They will let you in, but security will be aware of the fact that you are there for the cafe only. Security does do spot checks and if you decide to browse the art after lunch they will find out and ask you to pay the admission fee (and the staff will not be likely to give you a complimentary admission to go to the cafe the next time you come in).

Today however, I wanted to have lunch after church and go to the DIA, so I decided to combine the two.

Kitab Cafe and Bookstore - Gallagher Sandwich was delicious!

it is definitely more of a café than a bookstore!…read more Not a ton of books selections, but it is a great coffee spot. The sandwiches and bakery items look great, the soup smelled wonderful. I was there, but I would definitely come here for another black and tan. Staff were fast and friendly. It's clean and inviting.

It was a little later in the day so I decided to skip the coffee and went with a hot chocolate instead and some potato leek soup to go. The hot chocolate was a little sweeter than I like but it still hit the spot on a frigid winter day and I loved the soup! I'm not sure how often they have that variety but I'd definitely order it again if I saw it offered during future visits. They also do sandwiches (until 5pm) and have a nice selection of Zingerman's pastries to boot. The bookstore selection isn't huge but it's curated to showcase a few noteworthy titles in fiction, non fiction, and children's. There space in general isn't massive but it doesn't feel cramped either, with ample tables and a comfy seating area with couches for working, meeting, or just hanging out and reading a book. Barista was really kind and welcoming and there's a ton of local fliers, meeting info, etc located on a centralized bulletin board by the counter, which shows me they're a community centered space which I love! Looking forward to the opportunity to visit again, and next time I'll definitely be getting some coffee!

Even better, Star is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which has become a rare and precious thing now that COVID has flung our dining options back by 25 years. (Star had more limited hours when they first opened and were ramping up, but are now at full 24/7 operation.) I stopped by with two friends late on a Saturday night after celebrating's a friend's birthday down the street in Hamtramck. Star's parking lot was brightly lit and is near a high-traffic intersection (Conant & Davison), and the lobby/dining room inside is also brightly lit even late at night. They have a big and diverse menu, even compared to most other coneys. You'll find most of the expected standards here -- breakfast plates, omelettes, and sandwiches; burgers and hot sandwiches; coney dogs; fried appetizers. But there's also quite a few dishes not found at other coneys: chicken wings; burgers, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches made with naga pepper sauce; chicken tikka sandwiches; but perhaps best of them all are five different kinds of egg rolls, which are large and well-stuffed. I had loaded hashbrowns, chicken tikka egg rolls, and a naga dog. My tablemates had Philly steak egg rolls, a burger, and a breakfast sandwich. We were all happy with everything we got, and I'll gladly go back again even when it's not a post-bar stop. Glad to have you in the neighborhood, Star!
