On my first day in…read moreStockholm, I had planned to eat here - I'd heard extremely good things about it from reviews - but unfortunately the queue was out the door, and the summer weather was too hot for me to stand waiting for long, and so I left. Finally I've gotten the chance to try this place for myself, and it did not disappoint. The servers are efficient and polite, and the selection of pastries, breakfast and lunch when I was there was top notch. I ordered an omelette with smoked salmon and spinach, which came with a side salad topped off with authentic dijon mustard - a rarity in Sweden. For anyone missing the flavour of France, I would certainly recommend La Petite France. The prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the food. The only warning I have is that the seating becomes quite limited at busy hours (breakfast, lunch, fika and dinner), so be sure to plan ahead. The location is in a generally quiet quarter of Kungsholmen (unfortunately there was construction going on right across when I was there, but other than that, it's not noisy at all). Seating is mostly outdoors but also available indoors, and the outdoor tables are surprisingly well-shielded from rainstorms, as I found out by chance.

The place has a cozy feel and I especially love stopping by in autumn and winter for some soup or casseroles. They also do excellent salads so for spring an summer that is a great alternative. Price wise it is in the mid-range (in Stockholm) but lunches are often good value. Reservations are recommended as the place fills up quickly (they do however have some seats along the window that are for walk-ins). Wine list is not super extensive but what they have on it is carefully selected. The one thing that has not been top class on my past visits is the service. It has been knowledgeable but they have somewhat lost the friendliness that I used to find here. Service is by no means bad or rude so still above the average but not as great as it used to be. While it is cozy it is still not the place for discrete conversations as the tables are close to each other so one can easily hear what others are talking about. To summarize still one of the better French mid-range restaurants in town.

I had the steak tartare, with some alterations (I ordered 200g for 50 SEK extra, and a big salad rather than fries) that caused no problems. The food arrived within reasonable time. The steak was in the french form of a ready-blended patty (I prefer the neat and clean kind), similar to the one at Bistro Berns. The taste was good and fresh. I appreciated that the meat was cool, not cold - nice! So, plus for the food and minus for the crowd!

If you are arriving from the south (i.e. arriving from Södra station), try to not get lured by Johan & Nyström's; go their for your caffeine fix at some later time, surely, but at the moment, direct all attention to Petrus. But try to not walk past it; because the café is what Swedes would refer to as "mysigt" (cozy), you could unknowingly walk past it and stride into Mariatorget. Upon entering, you will be tasked with placing an order from the all equally eye-catching buns. Reassuringly, know that you can do no wrong, but if it's your first time (and one of your first times having a fika), the Beginner's Guide to Fika (if there were one) would recommend a kanelbulle, or a cinnamon bun. It's sticky, it's doughy, it's sweet, and the cinnamon is all there, with a kick of cardamom. It's best complimented by a cup of tea, I think, because coffee might steal the spotlight from the flavor. For seasoned fika experts, a kardemummabulle will give you an even stronger kick of spice. The kanel and kardemumma "fikabrod" are like the buns, just made in a bigger quantity. The semlor (available from Jan-April) are also great, but know that they aren't the most conventional. They're a bit sweeter than normal, my hunch being that there's something in addition to the almond paste that's usually in the buns. Perhaps it's a little too sweet, but nothing that irritated me, or dare I say stopped me. Seating can be a bit tricky to find, but don't let that discourage you from coming here. Staff are always super friendly and kind. I wish I lived next door.

I can't tell if the multitude of American reviews are because 1) Petrus has managed to attract tourists; 2) these particular Americans have taste; 3) Swedish people don't really use Yelp; or 4) some combination thereof. Needless to say, Petrus was recommended by some other friends who had previously visited Stockholm as the go-to for buns. It is well worth the trip. As many have noted, the storefront is small and tucked away off of a fairly high traffic pedestrian thorough fare. Given how many people are obsessed with staring into their phones, surely following google maps to the address won't be tough, but I've learned to lower my expectations of people over time. ANYWAY, I was pleased to stop into a coffee shop that wasn't Espresso House or Fabrique, the latter of which I'm lucky enough to enjoy at home. I was able to grab a seat by the door which gave an interior view (through a window) to their bakery which occupies the other space on the first floor of their building. Despite the baking appearing done for the day at that time, it was neat to see the machinery behind the delectable treats we were having. Coffee was straightforward and lacking in pretension, as you served yourself from the drip coffee thermos in the restaurant. As many have suggested, I'm sure the kanelbulle would have been as tasty as the kardamummabulle and "breakfast bun" (a slightly sweet combo of various nuts and seeds) I had. Everything was quick, pleasant, and tasty, just as a coffee shop / fika place should be; in a quiet, residential area which was relaxing; and a perfect beginning to get the day jump started.

The restaurant itself is a quaint little bistro with a mix of French, Mediterranean and Swedish food. Everything feels chic and cosy at the same time. Very modest european and NYC feel to the interior of the place. It's an excellent restaurant to go on a chill but nice date night with your significant other.

The space is fairly small so they are probably aiming for a lot of customers taking their food with them. There are however around 10 seats inside as well as several seats outside - it is however on the fairly busy Sveavägen so not really the nicest spot to sit outside at. Focus here is of course bread and baked goods. The breakfast that I opted for was the big breakfast which includes a large sandwich of your choice (they had egg and caviar, ham, cheese and ham&cheese to select from), coffee of your choice as well as a an almond cookie. The sandwiches looked delicious and they are not at all bad - just not that great either. I was satisfied with the egg sandwich and the ham&cheese one was ok. I would however be expecting a bit more from a bakery. The almond cookie was good, a bit too sweet for my taste but still tasty. Where they really fail is the coffee - poor quality beans makes the coffee pretty bad. These days there are plenty of good options to get some specialty coffee in and any place with some quality focus should offer something decent at least. Price-wise the breakfast is 59 SEK and that is not bad, with the offer they had via Yelp this week it was 2 for 1 so 2 breakfasts for 59 SEK is really good. I could imagine coming back for breakfast if I was in the area but not worth going out of your way to come here. Still if you live or work in the area it can be a good option.

Operated as a Champagne Bar and Café at Biblioteksgatan 6, nearby shopping and local businesses supplying an endless supply of foot traffic that has made the Restaurant as successful with tourists as it is with locals, guests arriving at one of the Restaurant's two entrances during morning hours will find themselves free to waltz right in and explore, table service eschewed in favor of a Bakery where items are laid out with prices a bit higher than other places less well appointed in terms of décor. Maintaining much of its old wood and granite, the kitchen clearly upgraded at some point since Wienercafeet was taken over by a local group managing at least a half-dozen additional Bars and Eateries, it was with several guests already enjoying Fika and Coffee that six items were selected from a line-up for approximately 240 SEK, first bites of the Cardamom Bun seeing caramelized outsides give way to a dense interior rich in Butter but low in Spices. Improving henceforth in terms of Food, the lone waiter in charge of Water refills spending most of time kibitzing with two middle-aged women seated outside, it was setting aside more than half of Roll one that attention turned instead to another topped in Nuts, the base similar but deeply penetrated by Sugar though in terms of taste the more traditional Tosca Tart proved better thanks to less Bread and more notable flavor from an array of Seeds and Nuts. Next investing in previously unheard of "Wienerbrod," a laminated ring of Pastry surrounding Vanilla Custard and lightly drizzled with Icing, it was here that Wienercaféet again showed well, the Budapest at first appearing dry but in reality delicate and light with smooth Cream supporting Orange segments while the Chokladbol was dark and rich but spared from being one dimensional by an equal ratio of Cocoa to Oats and Coconut.
