I've known of this place for a long time and have wanted to visit, so I'm glad it finally worked out! It's a really nice environment for one thing. We went in the evening for a jazz band, and we did need to pay and reserve seats online ahead of time. There is a $10 drink minimum per person as well, so it adds up if you go that route. But it's classy, their menu is pretty substantial and the service was great. The music was also really enjoyable as the band mostly played Brazilian jazz, so it was really different and refreshing. It is so hard to come by spacious coffee shops! I usually feel super cramped when I am going to do work with someone or just on my own. Caffe Vivace had a great layout, gorgeous latte art, a bar, and AMAZING peanut butter cup cookies -- please tell me what's not to love. The staff was extremely nice and for checking in I was rewarded a free large peanut butter cookie which I will definitely be getting again. Aside from my cookie I got a hot latte. I did order a large and was surprised that the drink only came in one size but nevertheless it tasted great. This place is so great! I'm sad that I discovered it right before moving out of town. The coffee is amazing, they offer every type of fancy coffee drink but their plain brewed coffee is my go to choice. As a vegan I was so happy to find that they offer two very yummy vegan items: the African peanut stew and a breakfast burrito. I could eat them daily. The ambiance is great for studying or working too. They have lots of seating and power outlets. So far I am a huge fan of this place for lunch. I really need to get back some evening to enjoy some music. I will update the review then. It is pretty early and they seem to be working out some kinks, but basically I really like this new place in Walnut Hills. I stop in for the breakfast sandwich and a beer. They have a great selection of beers, including a few from Brink brewing, a local brewery in College Hill. It was new to me but I really like their IPA. The servers are all trying very hard to make the place pleasant and run smoothly. The decor is very nice, I like the space with all the natural light flooding in. They have pastries and cookies which are also very good and a bit too tempting. The almond pastry is very good. The coffee is also top notch. Sometimes they have some brewed, but if not they serve a pour over with is very delicious, though it takes a few minutes. They usually have some jazz playing softly in the background, so it is just enough to set the mood of a jazz coffee bar. One review thus far? I'm shocked. I was there this evening, and I can tell you that the folks that run this place are DRIVEN to make their restaurant a wonderful place to eat and drink and listen to music. I went down to listen to the Rusty Burge trio, one of the many great jazz acts that this place has lined up. I know they open at 7 AM For breakfast, and if you are looking for a review of their food, this would not be one of them. We arrived during the middle of the first set, and once we were settled, the diligent waiter came around to get our drink orders. (you should have seen how gingerly he walked bringing my very full martini to my table!) There is a minimum drink order when jazz acts are playing, but it's only $10, which is very reasonable. I ordered a martini and it was a generously-sized drink; I was not disappointed. I also had some coffee, which was good. Overall, the experience was WONDERFUL. These folks love jazz, and they love their customers too. If you are inclined to go down for breakfast, or a sandwich, or just coffee, I'm pretty sure they do what they do very well. To me, it's all about the jazz, and I was extremely pleasantly surprised. Go there and eat a lot and drink a lot. I want this place to be there forever. read more

Came here a few months ago, before everything was closed down for the corona virus. We had a great time. They have a drink menu which specializes in different kinds of moscow mules. This happens to be my favorite drink so maybe I'm a little biased. They also had a winter drink menu with more options. The employees were really nice and helpful. They invite different jazz bands to to come play, and so the music is very good. We've been back once and it was just as great of an experience as the first. read more

Phil DeGreg's trio was playing and he played some Brazilian music since my wife and her friend are from Brazil. I was particularly impressed by the service. I think his name was Aaron. This cafe is new. I live 5 minutes walk from here. It's nice to have a walkable cafe from the house. I ordered an ice americano. Besides someone working, I was the only other person there. We went here for NYE. We booked tickets for Kathy Wade Quartet. First, I was very pleased to see they had sidecars on their menu and they tasted great. However, when I ordered the sidecar by pointing to the menu, the server said "do you want it with cognac or... the other one I can't remember what it is" I said yes cognac. (A sidecar is traditionally made with cognac). Later on our bill (which she tried to have us sign the little tablet for the total without showing us the breakdown) we noticed we were charged $6 more for each sidecar than the price shown on the menu. We asked why and she said well you chose cognac instead of brandy. I mean come on. You're kidding me, right? She never once mentioned when asking me if I wanted cognac or "the other one" (which she conveniently forgot the name of) that it would be $6 more for cognac. They ended up giving us back the $6 per drink but because our cc was already processed by then, we still paid tax and tip on the higher amount and they didn't refund us on that. And they never even apologized, as if we tried to scam them, when it was actually the other way around! Also, as a side note, the band was excellent but Kathy Wade is not a great singer at all. She was off key multiple times, unable to hit certain notes which really made me squirm. And the hors d'oeuvres were honestly horrible. I would not go again for NYE or for Kathy Wade. If you go another time, just make sure you are very clear on what liquor they use since it seems they try to get you to choose a different liquor and then surprise you with a hefty charge later without being transparent about it. (And while the menu does say in fine print at the bottom there may be additional charge for selection of specific liquor brands, that is very different than asking someone "cognac or the other one", they choose cognac and you charge them $6 more for choosing cognac. No brand of cognac was ever mentioned.) read more

I love Caffe Vivace, and living it the neighborhood, it's a great place to sit and work or read during the day. I was excited to go back when they had live music, so I suggested it for a date. But right before the music started, they requested that no one talk while the music was playing out of respect for the artists. Which, I get. People are there to see the jazz bands. But not a great date night atmosphere unless you just want to watch the music. Still giving it 5 stars, because they have great coffee, great food, and a wide variety of beers, wines, and spirits. Friday night my sisters and I went to this place looking for some good jazz. First of all looking at the beer selection, it was limited to either Corona or Pabst as far as what we were even familiar with. We are in our fifties so I guess we're not up on the cool beers to have. Lord forbid you ask for a bud lite or Coors lite or even Mich Ultra. We sat down anyway. The bartender finally comes over and says it's a $10 cover plus $10 worth of beers for each of us. I said "don't you mean either or" and she cut me off saying "no, both." By this time they didn't have what we wanted to drink anyway so my sisters wanted to leave and I said I would pay for their cover because I just wanted to hear some good jazz. Well after waiting probably 15 minutes we finally get our coronas and two mixed drinks. Before we had a chance to get our next drink she comes and says we're being to loud and to keep it down. We were shocked because we made sure we weren't loud because it was kind of empty and all the tables were facing the front like a school class. So she comes to me with another beer. I told her forget it! I was so mad I went up to the bar and said we weren't being loud and asked who complained. She said no one, but our voices carried all the way to the bar which, I kid you not, was 6 feet away! She was rude and on top of that slow! Needless to say we left and will never be back. She did say "this isn't a bar" after I said "we can't talk?" Wow! I was blown away, she couldn't have been any more rude! So if you plan on sitting in a classroom environment which is brightly lit I might add and don't plan on having a conversation at your on table, this is the place for you.
