First you go down an alley, only to reveal a secret enclave of an antique store, corner shop, and the tearoom. The square itself is fun to explore and great for photos. Once we sat down in the charming tearoom, we were greeted by a friendly and accommodating server. We ordered the afternoon tea. There was a perfect balance of sweet and savory with yummy finger sandwiches and delectable scones with clotted cream and jam. This is a lovely afternoon tea spot for all ages!

I had their house chai and their London fog, both of which were creamy and SO flavorful and served in the loveliest teapots. The finger sandwiches and cakes were also really good and I actually did leave full, as did my travel companions. The servers were friendly and checked in often, and the place itself was actually fairly big (had 2 floors and we sat in a corner on the second floor), but it had a quant feel. The cost per person was reasonable in my opinion at £16 per person for a mini pot of tea and selection of sandwiches and tea cakes. We really enjoyed our experience there and I would recommend it to anyone looking to have a lovely afternoon tea!

The origins of this…read morebuilding was it was commissioned by Catherine Cranston who was a leading figure in the development of tea rooms and a major supporter and patron of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It was originally opened in 1903 and restored and reopened in 2018. It's the last surviving Mackintosh tea room and worth coming to for amazing architecture and history. If you are seated near the windows people-watching is SO good and doing it from the high-backed Mackintosh chairs gives the whole experience an very surreal quality. The third floor was not occupied when we went and I liked the blue colors, this is also the floor where the bathrooms are. My wife wanted to try a traditional British afternoon tea experience, for some reason we have never tried it before and have been to the UK, Scotland, and Ireland before. The appealing this is its the stereotype of the experience with fancy pots and teacups for the tea, and stacks of small plates on a carrying tray like a movie. They offer a "classic" afternoon tea which has a mixture of sandwiches with smoked salmon, egg salad, cucumber, and ham. Sweets are fruit scones or cake with homemade short bread rounds. My wife got this one. They also offer a "savory" afternoon tea which I got. The sandwiches are the same but it comes with haggis on oatcakes, sausage pastry roll, chicken, and a cheese and tomato tart. I got this and we both loved these. For teas we highly, highly recommend the House blended tea "Mackintosh". It's like a "super" version of black tea and I never had one like it. It's so good we keep trying to replicate an English Afternoon tea like this at home!

The Crypt is like a pleasant cafeteria. You collect your food on a tray, pay and then take a seat. The tables are all set up for six people so you often end up sharing unless you're in with a group. Food wise there's soup, toasties, pies, salad bowls, macaroni cheese, pizza slices, baked potatoes and some dessert options like traybakes on offer. I've found the food to be quite basic but not bad and it's cheap. My tomato soup and cheese and ham toastie cost £4. There are quite a lot of cafe options in the West End where I think the food is better and similarly priced but if I was a student or working at the uni I imagine The Crypt would come in handy for a short lunch break. It's also a lot more spacious than most places so you could get your laptop out or catch up on some reading without feeling like you're hogging a table.

I waited around 30 mins for tea to come out. The pastry was a bit hard and seemed like it had been sitting out for awhile. The seats outside are those plastic chairs that are not very sturdy. There was a tall, broad man that came to the restaurant while I was there, and he was embarrassed because he wouldn't fit in the chairs. So the seating is not necessarily accessible to everyone. I had to wave down a server to get my check after sitting there for an hour and half waiting. Overall, the ambiance is nice but I would choose somewhere else to get afternoon tea.

I expected something a little more than what they where doing here, there was just something missing like an atmosphere, the tea rooms are ok but felt to corporate like or council canteen. There is a display of cakes as you walk in the seating area but sadly they are overpriced bought in items, with a cup of Earl grey and small bought in cheese cake setting you back £6.50, I personally know a place just around the corner where I stay where you can buy a coffee and home made cake for £4.50. Inside the tearoom in the seating area the walls are decorated with colourful oil paintings for sale, some where priced between £50-£100. An ok place if your looking for nothing exciting.

It was our first stop so, what's best that getting a good cuppa in before our walk?! I'd been here before many years ago with Angela B but had the memory of we didn't like it. The place is very very hidden in the West End, you've got to know or plan how to get to it as it's down one of the many Glasgow's West End's hidden lanes. When I arrived it was puzzling me why didn't we like it, then my man reminded me they do the shisha pipe and they used to be able to smoke it indoors before the smoking ban. Ahhhhh!!!!! Now I remember. They fortunately now take the shisha outside in their wee tea garden. As it is a very small venue, it makes me think of a student's living room, it's that small. I think Angela and I being non smokers it was too smoky for us while trying to enjoy our tea and I hadn't really enjoyed my choice the last time either. This time though was much better. Yay!!!! With guidance from Sara I choose the Turkish Apple tea which was absolutely delicious. I would definitely have again. Slurp! I still find it too cosy, I know that sounds weird but maybe because it's very cluttered with stuff, lots of trinkets and just stuff. There's also lots of soft furnishings so not short of cushions and blankets but for some reason I'm not the biggest fan. Maybe it's just me and I just find it too claustrophobic, especially if it gets very busy. I still say it's somewhere worth popping into if your out visiting the West End for the experience.
