Mackintosh at the Willow - Formerly The Billiard Room

Afternoon Tea in an amazingly restored Art Nouveau interior by Mackintosh. The origins of this…read morebuilding was it was commissioned by Catherine Cranston who was a leading figure in the development of tea rooms and a major supporter and patron of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It was originally opened in 1903 and restored and reopened in 2018. It's the last surviving Mackintosh tea room and worth coming to for amazing architecture and history. If you are seated near the windows people-watching is SO good and doing it from the high-backed Mackintosh chairs gives the whole experience an very surreal quality. The third floor was not occupied when we went and I liked the blue colors, this is also the floor where the bathrooms are. My wife wanted to try a traditional British afternoon tea experience, for some reason we have never tried it before and have been to the UK, Scotland, and Ireland before. The appealing this is its the stereotype of the experience with fancy pots and teacups for the tea, and stacks of small plates on a carrying tray like a movie. They offer a "classic" afternoon tea which has a mixture of sandwiches with smoked salmon, egg salad, cucumber, and ham. Sweets are fruit scones or cake with homemade short bread rounds. My wife got this one. They also offer a "savory" afternoon tea which I got. The sandwiches are the same but it comes with haggis on oatcakes, sausage pastry roll, chicken, and a cheese and tomato tart. I got this and we both loved these. For teas we highly, highly recommend the House blended tea "Mackintosh". It's like a "super" version of black tea and I never had one like it. It's so good we keep trying to replicate an English Afternoon tea like this at home!

First you go down an alley, only to reveal a secret enclave of an antique store, corner shop, and the tearoom. The square itself is fun to explore and great for photos. Once we sat down in the charming tearoom, we were greeted by a friendly and accommodating server. We ordered the afternoon tea. There was a perfect balance of sweet and savory with yummy finger sandwiches and delectable scones with clotted cream and jam. This is a lovely afternoon tea spot for all ages!

I had their house chai and their London fog, both of which were creamy and SO flavorful and served in the loveliest teapots. The finger sandwiches and cakes were also really good and I actually did leave full, as did my travel companions. The servers were friendly and checked in often, and the place itself was actually fairly big (had 2 floors and we sat in a corner on the second floor), but it had a quant feel. The cost per person was reasonable in my opinion at £16 per person for a mini pot of tea and selection of sandwiches and tea cakes. We really enjoyed our experience there and I would recommend it to anyone looking to have a lovely afternoon tea!

I sat outside it…read morethe beautiful gardens and was able to take in all the gorgeous nature but also be secluded from the crowds. The servers were nice enough but it was rather slow. I waited around 30 mins for tea to come out. The pastry was a bit hard and seemed like it had been sitting out for awhile. The seats outside are those plastic chairs that are not very sturdy. There was a tall, broad man that came to the restaurant while I was there, and he was embarrassed because he wouldn't fit in the chairs. So the seating is not necessarily accessible to everyone. I had to wave down a server to get my check after sitting there for an hour and half waiting. Overall, the ambiance is nice but I would choose somewhere else to get afternoon tea.

I expected something a little more than what they where doing here, there was just something missing like an atmosphere, the tea rooms are ok but felt to corporate like or council canteen. There is a display of cakes as you walk in the seating area but sadly they are overpriced bought in items, with a cup of Earl grey and small bought in cheese cake setting you back £6.50, I personally know a place just around the corner where I stay where you can buy a coffee and home made cake for £4.50. Inside the tearoom in the seating area the walls are decorated with colourful oil paintings for sale, some where priced between £50-£100. An ok place if your looking for nothing exciting.

For the very reasonable £14.95, the afternoon tea is made up of your choice of English/Scottish loose tea, two rounds of sandwiches (e.g. cheese and tomato, tuna and sweetcorn, ham and tomato, egg mayonnaise), scones with cream and jam, and a selection of cakes. The staff are absolutely lovely - run by a family, it's lovely and unique to be seated by a granny, then have her grandson bring over your order, then pay the auntie! The staff have always been so lovely to speak to as well - chatty, friendly and cheerful, giving the Glasgow Tea Rooms a more 'friendly local' vibe than other similar tea rooms and restaurants in the Merchant City area. The afternoon tea is a generous size - every time I've visited I've had to take away at least a few of the cakes in a box because me and my friends simply couldn't manage them at the time! It's not a problem at all to take away some of the food if you've not managed to eat it all, with the staff usually suggesting it before you even have to ask. Everything is home made and fresh, which means you can ask for a slight change in sandwich toppings if you fancy (e.g. I always have cheese sandwiches with no tomato) and - if you're lucky enough to time it right like I was last time - you can tuck in to scones warm from the oven. The Glasgow Tea Rooms does get busy, so, especially if you're popping in over the weekend, I recommend booking a table. The last time I visited every table was full so the staff were really busy which meant there was a bit of a delay between finishing our pot of tea and having a fresh one brought to the table - if you're happy with a short wait then pop in any time, otherwise I'd avoid Saturday and Sunday lunch times! A lovely homely venue in the city centre - I've already been a handful of times and would definitely visit again!

They are very nice and will have a chat with you as they serve teas, coffees or their great selection of cakes and goodies. They serve amazing afternoon tea on vintage china, it is a great idea for taking out mum or grandma. They have a three tier cake stand; sandwiches on the bottom, scones with jam and cream then cakes on top. They play Sinatra on the speakers and the carpet is just like your grandma used to have, it has a really homely feel. There is a massive painting on one wall of various Glasgow attractions which really makes it feel Glaswegian and authentic. I can't say how good this place is enough, I have been a few times now and enjoyed it every time, the family made me feel very welcome and I'm proud to take my family and friends there.

Anyhow, I recall her excitement at finding this place a while back but never having been in. I took it upon myself to do all the work and pick her up some chocolates for a mini-celebration. They might have been better than the ones I have just worked through from Marks and Spencers I got from Christmas, and were certainly better than Thorntons. Everything in Thorntons sort of tastes the same, in the same way everything in McDonalds also tastes the same. The staff were friendly and chatty and more or less done the work on my behalf to be fair with regards to buying the chocolates, all I done was actually pay for them. Didn't pay as much as I was prepared to either so I treated myself to a cup of coffee, which was also above average. I am a romantic man. Who knows how to treat himself as well.
