La Turka Bistro - Grilled seafood platteravishing!

La Turka Bistro

It's looking increasingly unlikely that I'll be holidaying in Turkey this summer. To get over this…read moreunbearable disappointment (first world problems) I've been adamant in finding the best in Turkish cuisine Manchester has to offer. And boy have I found another gem for all fellow foodie Yelpers. Eccles isn't exactly on par with the city centre, Chorlton, Didsbury et al as a place foodies rush to in their droves. However, that might be changing very soon. Driving through Monton village felt more like cruising through the leafy suburbs of Prestbury than Eccles. Monton road is already littered with decent eateries such as Enoteca, Blind pig, Malt dog and Blacksticks amongst others. The addition of La Turka not so long ago adds considerable weight to the argument that this part of Manchester is fast becoming another foodie hub. After dining at La Turka I'll certainly rubber stamp that assertion. A friend of mine brought this place to my attention after I confessed my love of all food Turkish, so off we went having booked our table in advance. (I was told it's mega busy all week) The restaurant may not look very big from the outside but has over 100 covers and a car park at the back. The interior is very airy, spacious and carries a real holiday vibe (Always a hit with me) It was very busy as predicted but there was enough staff to keep things flowing smoothly. The kitchen was visible from our table and we could almost taste the delicious aromas. The attention to detail by the proprietors was reflected in the fact they spotted us as new diners and came over for a quick chat. The order to arrival time was exceptional but not as good as the food itself. Hands down the chicken livers were the best I've tried in a long time and the spiciness was perfectly complemented by our zesty second starter, Veggi stuffed mushrooms. The bread and yoghurt sauce served as a side was also fresh and delightful. What's more, the sweet chutney served with the livers was an innovative addition, I liked it. When ordering the mains, my decision was heavily influenced by the fact I was starving. A meat platter was swiftly ordered without much thought. As good as the other options probably were I was in no mood for experimentation and opted for a good old carnivorous protein fix. My friend ordered the seafood platter which probably won the aesthetically pleasing award, not that I cared. My plate of delicious meat may not have looked as good but it certainly tasted fantastic. The lamb chops were perfectly seasoned and grilled to perfection. There was just enough crisp without too much burn and the meat was well cooked and just the right side of tender. The chicken and beef kofte were also divine as was the red sauce served with it. Perhaps the portion of rice could've been a tad more generous but the generosity of the meat portion meant I withheld anything resembling complaint. The seafood platter was no mug either, although I only tried the mussels (which were heavenly) I have it on good authority it was sensational. After the meat sweats had subsided we bravely ordered a Creme Brulee to share (Even though there was absolutely no room left in our respective well fed bellies) I had a few spoons and was very impressed but not surprised. It was a great way to end the evening. The only slight downside to the evening was that some of the staff weren't on their game and looked a little young and inexperienced. I'm certain that with time the management will amend this slight hiccup. The food and atmosphere however was absolutely brilliant, and I've bookmarked this place for sure. So should you! A mere 5 miles or so outside Manchester, the car journey took around 10 minutes from Deansgate. The 33 bus from near Hilton Deansgate takes around 30 minutes. Which means it's probably closer (If not he same distance) than the likes of Chorlton and Didsbury to get to. I highly recommend it! I shall be updating the review in the near future after my second visit. A great little innings from Monton for Manchester, bravo! As a side note, they're now open 9am to midnight serving breakfast outside in their brand new terrace. So as soon as summer arrives (It's nearly July, better late than never) I will be here sitting outside having Turkish breakfast pretending I'm in Istanbul! I'll also probably return to check out what this belly dancing night malarkey is all about on the weekend.

When it comes to food, it's salty!! I guess they spend more on salt. Why not, it's cheap and adds flavour! You will agree it does exactly the opposite and makes it not palatable if you forget you already added salt once to the dish! The end result not a good starter!! You might think it was a mistake, but if the mains come with a salt lake!! Well you got to question if they have a salt company and sell it at the restaurant!! Don't worry the baklava did not have salt!! Hence the 2 stars If you want to see belly dancing, surely there are other places..... and not T!

Ambiente is well worth the trip to Worsley. Nominated by the Manchester Food & Drink Festival as…read morethe best newcomer of 2008, it stands head and shoulders above the other Spanish restaurants in the city for its creative modern approach to traditional favourites. However, don't come here thinking you're going to be paying tapas bar prices as this place is very much a special occasion destination. As you'd figure from the name, the owners have spent some time creating a wonderful ambience here with stunning red drapes hanging low over a very rustic scene. The menu choice is outstanding, with tapas classics taken to a new level of sophistication without disrupting the original flavours too much. Mains (or raciones) include my personal favourites Conejo Basco (braised rabbit) and Pollo Tournado (with paprika and Chorizo fondue, melted Manchego cheese and sherry cream, £15.95). Washed down with a Long Island Iced Tea, I felt like I was floating when I left here. Definitely a great restaurant if you're looking for romance or dressing to impress.

Even Google maps wasn't having it but when we did find it, it is well worth it. It's a small restaurant that is quite dark inside. There is a simple yet effective tapas menu with all the usual dishes and a few different ones to tempt you. For me, Spanish food done well is something we are lacking in the City Centre. This is a bit of a trek but well worth a visit. My favourite dishes were the calamari (soft and tender with a light batter), chilli bread (toasted with just the right amount of chilli to heat your mouth without blowing your socks off) and meatballs (soft and juicy with a good amount of sauce for dipping when you have nearly finished). I think it might be my favourite Spanish in this country so far...

I'd forgotten that we had takeaway food from here before, but once it was suggested to me I…read moreremembered. So this time we got a mix of meatballs, falafel, moussaka and chicken souvlakia among four. The food arrived fairly quickly which impressed us, and had really tasty sides like salads (that included olives) tomato and yoghurt based dips as well as pita breads. I had the moussaka and salad and it was so flavourful and properly seasoned it was just prefect. As I was enjoying the food it struck me that to call this restaurant food would be to mis inform. Oh no, this was home - cooking at its best and way above restaurant standard. What I mean is if you set out to make the best moussaka with the best ingredients this is what you'd get. As it was takeaway we had a few fabulous beers by 7 brothers that they brewed from Kellogg's coco pops and Rice Krispies from cereals that would otherwise just be wasted; instead it becomes beer and the brewery waste given over free to farmers to feed pigs. The takeaway food we got here was about £10 a head so darn good value really for the quality and deliciousness. And as I thought about it, Chinese takeaway prices in particular have risen unjustifiably year on year with food quality taking a real nose dive so next time we'll think of this Greek long before over paying for rubbish food. So if you have a Chinese local takeaway, and you are paying near a fiver for a starter and seven quid for a main please become more discerning. If the food isn't top notch now start saying so as it's the only way to bring higher standards back or you'll be paying through the nose for rubbish.

Certainly not the prettiest establishment on the block, but sometimes you get the best food from tatty looking places. Although the restaurant was empty, it took a while for the waiter to come over to take our orders. I must point out, he was a lovely, lovely man and very endearing. We ordered our starters and meals and anxiously waited to tuck in. Slowly other folks started to trickle in, which made us feel confident that it was a good place, given the numerous options immediately surrounding it on Northenden. Oddly, it seemed people that came in after us were getting served before us. We chalked it up to the fact that ours was getting special attention in the kitchen. The starters of tahini & pita and the fried feta came out. I've never had fried feta before and imagined it would be glorious. Guess what? It tastes just like it sounds....hot feta. Super salty, same consistency of unfried feta, just hotter and not very nice. The tahini was fine. For the mains, I had the lamb kabob and hubs had Greek sausages (forget what they are called). The lamb kabob (insert heavy sigh). It was way over cooked, and strangely didn't taste of anything yet still tasted not very good, if that makes sense. I almost took hubby's eye out after trying to slide a piece off the stick with my fork, and it was as if it was stuck with glue..finally giving way and flying across the table into my darlings baby blues. There was rice and a giant pile of shredded lettuce along with some raw veg (I have no problem with raw veg at all so that was one part of the meal I enjoyed). Very bland though, and hubs grumbled that his was not nice either. The highlight of the night was the lovely waiter. I wish all serving staff had his warm, friendly and charming personality. It almost made up for the sub-par food. Almost.

Chorlton

One visit and I love Panicos…read more I'll give you the highlights: - Handy location in Chorlton, near a number of bars and the tram and bus stops - so it's easy to roll out of a bar, into Panicos, and then home with your kebab. - The shop is small but clean and tidy. - Prices are reasonable - I paid less than £5 for a kebab on naan. - The staff are great! My lamb kofte broke on the grill and the staff member insisted on 'repairing' it by putting some chicken shawarma on top. No complaints here! He also gave me a piece of shawarma to eat while waiting. I'd be much happier to stand in queues in general if I were given food every time. - Obviously the proof is in the pudding - the food was delicious. Salad and sauces were fresh and plentiful. The meat was juicy and full of flavour. Next time I think I'll go for chicken shawarma all the way - I usually steer clear of chicken expecting it to be dry and bland but this was super tasty.

Well, perhaps class is the wrong word, and may attract the wrong clientele. Big, filling, cheap food that tastes healthy in comparison to any other fast food. The kind of kebab you could go for with your mum.
