Food was amazing! A must try!

Food was amazing! A must try! I got the Jackie Chan and the Big breakfast! Both were delicious!

Trekking through the laneways of Melbourne CBD we crossed this little place for lunch. It is the famous Melbourne Cup Day so things are a little quieter than usual in the area, with a few shops actually closed today. What made us stop here was the fact that they weren't the norm of this lane (ie just serving breakfast and/or pizza). The better half started with a raspberry hot chocolate which she thought was awesome. Deciding on the menu was made a little easier by two potential menu items not being available. I had the pulled pork bun whereas the other half had the open lamb souvlaki. Didn't really care for the presentation of her meal as the lettuce looked like it wasn't fresh. Mine was fairly delicious however I wouldn't come here if I was on a health kick - food was a little greasy, but good all the same. It was a tough star rating. I think a 3.5 would be suffice for this place.

A nice place to eat breakfast in Melbourne CBD. You can sit along the alleyway and people watch, which is perfect on a beautiful day. I ordered the açaí bowl and liked it, but think it could have been a bit more flavorful. The passion fruit on top was a nice touch. The latte was okay.

NOTES: ~ I texted my friend saying "I just found the cutest cafe!" and "cutest" auto-corrected into "firestone". This has absolutely nothing to do with the review but made me giggle for the next 5 minutes. Background Information: I had a pretty rough and upsetting weekend and whenever I'm upset, I always gorge on food so I went out and planned to get my favourite dumplings at Shanghai Street only to find that it was closed. You know those times when you become disappointed because you didn't really get what you hoped for, but things turn out better than expected? This is one of those times. I hungrily ended up walking around the CBD, trying to find a place to satisfy my stomach only to see nothing but closed restaurants (it was Sunday after all, so I guess it's understandable). I ended up stumbling upon a beautiful, dimly lit laneway that had a wonderful charm and my heart immediately lit up and my mouth dropped. I feel like if you're a Melbourne-native and grew up among the laneways, it's a lot harder to appreciate. But seeing as how I recently moved here a few months ago, every time I stumble upon a laneway I feel like a tourist all over again. Ambiance: Absolutely wonderful. Usually, I don't like cramped tiny restaurants, but I can make an exception for this place. Dimly lit, wooden tables, cushy seats - it actually looks like someone's backyard relaxation spot or something. Adorable. Customer Service: I was served by this tiny, cute Asian girl who never stopped smiling. She was very very friendly, and the food came out at a respectable time given how packed this restaurant was. Even the chefs smiled every time they passed by. You could really make yourself feel at home here! Food: I ordered the Osso Bucco, a side of Potatoes w/ Mayonnaise, and a Banana Milkshake. I don't remember their exact names because it has a lot of description with it. Osso Bucco - Terrific! A tad expensive, but the meat was tender and fall-off-the-bone. The mashed potatoes it laid on top of was creamy and delicious, the tomatoes tangy and flavourful. Potatoes w/ Mayonnaise - It's not only mayonnaise - they add a lot of flavouring with spices and honey as well. The potatoes were chopped and cooked perfectly - very soft and went well with the mayonnaise. Banana Milkshake - Yum! Tasted like bananas mixed with honey, you cannot go wrong with this. Their portions are huge and delicious, so it's well worth the value. --- Issus helped me fall in love with Melbourne and made me remember what made this city so special - the laidback, strange charm it possesses of finding hidden gems everywhere you look. There's just something magical about it. I will definitely be coming back as well as exploring the laneways a lot more. And thank you for cheering me up from my disastrous weekend. This is my new favourite restaurant in Melbourne :)

This place was very cool. It's on a small street with a lot of character. We shared the middle eastern egg breakfast which was soo good we went back the next day for the same. The meatballs were delish. The side of sausage was eh; the first day we had bacon that was much better. It was plenty of food for me and my gf to split for a light breakfast. We also had the banana milkshake and the banana berry milkshake. The first day the banana shake was amazing but the second day I think they forgot the honey. The big globs of honey made it especially sweet and good. The berry banana shake was fantastic. I also had a glass of the chasing thieves Chardonnay which wasn't bad. What can I say, I'm an american on vacation, I like booze with my breakfast.

This is a place for a nice date or evening out with friendly service and requisite menu prices. At each table is a fresh taper candle that's lit as soon as you sit down, and soon after ordering, we received an amuse bouche of a parmesan crisp with fromage blanc and mustard, as well as bread service--sourdough with two kinds of seasoned butter! To start, we shared the assorted greens (lettuce, radicchio) in buttermilk dressing, which was fresh but nothing too spectacular. We continued with our mains: the snapper with pureed eggplant, oyster sauce, watermelon radish, and purplette onion was creative and tasty. But my favorite was definitely the mushroom pithivier, a lovely mushroom "pie" made of layers of duxelles, kohlrabi, and Comte cheese in a flaky, crispy pie crust! Absolutely divine--the filling was rich with umami, but light at the same time with the kohlrabi. The dish came with a light frisee salad on the side and a mushroom ketchup, which added a hit of acidity to every bite of the savory pie. We were told that the pie would take 30-40 minutes to prepare after ordering, but it was totally worth it! We decided to skip dessert, but to finish off, we were given small complementary bites of a jelly and a salted chocolate truffle, which simply melted in your mouth! Overall, this is a lovely place to come for fine dining, though it does get expensive quickly.

"I just rescued some wine. It was trapped in a bottle."…read more Why try just one wine bar when you can do two from the same group? Another stunner with its solid energy, jovial conversations and relaxed feel in a contemporary setting. Wine is king here. New and dynamic wines from up and coming producers to DRC's and Australia's very own Henschke Hill of Grace. 30 wines by the glass, 600+ by the bottle. All at very reasonable prices. Food is a big part of the wine loving experience and Cutler and Co delivers. Ingredients are fresh and seasonal. The menu changes regularly to reflect this. Standouts included: Donuts with sour cream, salmon roe and chives - Not a donut in the American sense, this one, more like a pate a choux puff. Mix up the accompanying sour cream, salmon eggs and chives then spread it on, the slightest hint of yolky brininess in the otherwise mostly sour cream spread and a sip of a racy red; ahhhh. Taco of suckling pig, salsa verde, anchovy and rocket - A simple white corn tortilla with chunk of crispy skin, juicy and tender suckling pig, a smear of a creamy salsa verde backed by anchovy and a peppery, bitter rocket leaf. Add a squeeze of lemon and the flavors come together while begging for a sip of wine. Zucchini flowers, fresh cheese, pickled radicchio and pistachio - A true celebration of summer. Vibrant, fresh, colorful. A kiss of citrus sweetness from the zucchini flowers, texture from the young zucchini themselves. A zesty vinaigrette brings it all together. You guessed it, more wine please! Service is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Prices are good with many selections 60AUD - 80AUD. Markup for top wines 1.5x - 2x auction prices. A worthy visit. Just remember, be a good visitor to Australia, "save water, drink wine".

That being said, the 5-course lunch was executed well: it had some unique elements and the service throughout the experience was excellent. The stand-out dish of the day was for sure the Meat Fruit, I was kinda hoping for the mandarin but that day they served the plum. The pate was super delicious, one of the best I ever had! The first dish of the day, Hay Smoked Kingfish was also flawless, it showed restraint and was perfectly balanced. The entree, Chicken with Lettuces was very tasty but I found that the garnishes were better than the protein itself. That being said, I found the Meat & Flesh on the salty side and for a 38$ appetizer I find the amount of meat, two tiny pieces about the size of my pinky nail, unacceptable. In addition, I asked the sommelier for a cocktail suggestions and specifically stated that I did not want a sweet cocktail. He suggested the Mint Rickey which was way too sweet for my taste. Overall a good experience, would go back for the Meat fruit and the atmosphere was excellent but I wouldn't call it a flawless experience and isn't that what you expect for this type of restaurant?
