First time eating Ethiopian. I ordered 2 dishes for takeaway, which came out to $30. The bread was a little sour; I didn't care for it, an acquired taste for sure. Got the beef stew, it was ok. There was a decent amount of meat. The flavors were very earthy. I also ordered the lamb with spinach. The meat came in small bits and was pretty tough. There wasn't much flavor to the dish. Think steamed spinach with small bits of boiled lamb. Too bad, I really wanted to enjoy this place. I may try it again and go with someone who knows what to order. read more

We got the veggie combo, chicken combo, and green chicken. Most of the dishes were either oily or dry, and just not gelling the ingredients together enough somehow. Like, fosolia from other places tends to be cut green beans and carrots intimately commingled in a soft pile. The green beans here were entire green bean pods like stir fried veggies with a sprinkling of spices. The green chicken was dry and not as flavorful as Ras Dashen. read more

In Seattle visiting and had to hit a few Ethiopian places. Ended up at this Cafe Ibex and was really pleased. We had the vegetarian combo and the Fish Tibs (no spice). It was so delicious, we ordered more. What was amazing was that even my picky toddler son loved the spinach and nearly ate an entire veg combo portion. We liked that they could adjust the spice a bit so that it was edible to everyone. The portion sizes are very generous. The restaurant was clean with good ambience and has a parking lot. Ibex is a great spot for Ethiopian, and I've even seen a show on their stage in back. We always order the combo platter for two people. The price is incredible, beer is cheap, and they were very sweet to our 3-month-old baby. We sent my small-town parents by themselves, and they loved it as well. Great value, sweet service. We had the vegetable combo platter and the spiced Injeera. I have tried Ethiopian food in NY, RI, CA - other than WA. I must say that the best Ethiopian food I had was at this place. I am an Indian and I have always had a problem when the Injeera was sour (it reminds me of sour dosas). The Injeera at this place was excellent. The vegetables were extremely well made. The spiced Injeera was absolutely delicious. The prices are perfect too. Best Ethiopian in Seattle, although the beef was a little tough. But the veggie combo is the best and on the best Injera I've ever had. It's thin and a little crispy on the edges. Perfect. Cafe Ibex truly is the best Ethiopian restaurant in Seattle! Our family has gone there numerous times and we love their food! The servers and everyone working there are super friendly and helpful. There are many different things on their menu, so people who are gluten free, vegan, etc. have many things to choose from. For four people, we usually stick with one veggie combo and one meat combo to split. The food comes out quickly, hot and smelling delicious. They bring everyone as much injera as they want and it is usually warm and always delicious. The meat combo satisfies meat lovers, with multiple meats, all incorporated with different sauces, spices and tastes. The veggie combo is a personal favorite with Kik alicha (split pea stew), a small salad, some misir wat (red lentil stew) and other vegetable dishes. I can't wait to go back again!!!! read more

This is an incomplete review. All I can rate them on is the service and facilities. A one or two star rating seems too harsh based on other peoples food reviews and a three star seems too generous, I don't want to skew their numbers based on a possible anomaly though. The place was unassuming, but clean. Saturday at about 9:30 pm, I went in to ask for a to go menu. Went out to the car to see what my wife wanted. Came back and couldn't get anyone to take the order. The gentleman that gave me the menu was at the register apparently trying to work out a credit card problem. The two women that were also working came and went from the register to tables. I was in the right place to order, I let a woman go ahead of me that was just getting drinks ( she was having the credit card problem...) After about 15 - 20 minutes of only getting momentary eye contact with the wait staff I gave up. It was busy, but not so busy that they couldn't get an order going. Perhaps it would have been different earlier in the day, or if I had sat at a table, or some other factor I'm overlooking? Restaurants are a service industry though and the service I received was disappointing. If you can get some food there it is supposed to be pretty good. read more

I've been a fan for a while from before the light rail and after. The space is spartan and understated. The food is quite good and is also a good value. hmmmm.....well, the place is a dump but the food is very good. i had my usual, the veggie combo, and it was quite delicious. i was with 3 other people and since we all ordered the same thing, it was served on 2 huge platters instead of 4 big ones. it made the experience feel more intimate, sharing a plate with a friend. it worked for our group but i can see how it wouldn't work for less acquainted people. we were the only people there for lunch on a a saturday, which was sad. the price is right on par with what i'm used to ($12 for a platter that serves 2), though i did end up eating the majority of my half of the double platter, skipping breakfast to accomplish that feat. i'm still searching for that perfect combination of great food AND ambiance. every place in seattle i've been to thus far has either one or the other. read more
