But, I had over looked this recently renovated restaurant, built into the foundations of the red bricked building. Oxford Exchange is a superbly welcoming chique bohemian restaurant. Surrounded in black, leather and warmly lit the long sloping restaurant leads to a semi-open kitchen at the rear of the premises. A large bar and small seated balcony for lunch hours complete the set-up. The food is right up my street. A combination of rich meaty main courses, zesty starters and interesting desserts. On my first trip I had deep-fried goats cheese balls served with a acidic chilli salsa. Superbly tart and creamy cheese balanced perfectly by crisp shallot, fresh cubes of tomato and puckering chilli. The main. A chunk of well sourced rib-eye steak, crab claws and huge prawns. A modern take on the traditional surf and turf, the steak was gamey and woody, hugely flavoured and balanced perfectly by the clean slight iodine character from the freshest local crab. All brought together with a nutty beurre noisette. This was served with a rich fruity Rioja. The prices are very reasonable, the surroundings warm and welcoming, the service fast and friendly and the food absolutely superb. This is an often over-looked little eatery which demands your attention.

The staff were very attentive and a glass was never empty for long. I had the organic slow roasted lamb and it was delicious. The meat just fell off the bone and melted in the mouth. I went for the first time a couple of weeks ago and really badly want to go back asap. The interior is just the kind I love, all starched linen tablecloths and napkins. The atmosphere however is not starched, well not at our table anyway and no-one complained so it must be the kind of place you don't have to whisper. Tedfords is famous as a seafood restaurant which fits with its location right down at the water in Belfast. I had smoked salmon, crab mayo and quail egg. Without the quail egg. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll know that eggs make me hurl. The good news is that the waiter didn't huff or puff of look as if he felt sorry for me. The other good news is that the salmon was fab - delicate and beautifully flavoured. I felt obliged to have fish again for main course and boy was I glad. On of my group had recommended the curried monkfish and I now do too. It was sublime - the meaty fish was matched brilliantly by the creamy sauce and fragrant coconut rice. I was all full up with no room for desert but managed 2 spoons of the husband's chocolate soufflé with fresh (huge) strawberries. Bliss. Tedford's is certainly not cheap but for a special night out as a couple or with friends, it is my new must go to.

The ambiance is cozy, upscale, and yet makes for a nice place to hang out with friends. Go for the pork belly which comes as a big chunk of meat, perfectly seared and chewy. The monkfish was the standout of the night. I was congratulated for my menu prowess with a "best lineup of the night" comment, but I think the monkfish was the MVP. The lobster roll was crispy, buttery but not watery, and substantial without being overly fishy. The curry sauce that accompanied the dish, I could have eaten alone or just with the rice though the thick cut and well seasoned fish made it all the better. All around the mulberry bush, the monkfish was the best I've had. Dessert was this assortment of sweets that put together I think looks like a muppet's head. The peanut butter ice cream was delicious with a great balance of sweet and slight salty savoryness. The custardy chocolate was also excellent and on the dark side which offset the sweetness of the ice cream. The crispy biscuits provided a texture difference and cut through the sweetness to keep it from getting cloying. The service was a bit aloof though. Our waiter over-poured prosecco to overfill the glass, spilled wine on the table, and nearly knocked out someone with a plate.o the owner or employees.

I don't blame the staff; they're mostly young adults but I'd challenge management to elevate their expectations and service. For example, when orders are taken the team should note who ordered what. Their approach is to bring food to the table and ask, who ordered the filet? Same with water and bread service. They dont anticipate, you need to ask. The hot stone was novel, but my ribeye was tough and sinewy; not a very good cut. The decor and setting were ok, the location is great so they're set for success. They just need to work on the details!

Lunch menu is decent to sample some fancy dishes £6.50 each. Of your in town and want to be a bit posh for the day this is the place to go. You may have to google some of the names of the dishes. And you'd be right. I am not a fan of seafood so cannot comment on those particular dishes. But I can comment on plenty of other things. The restaurant has went to great lengths to fancify itself but lets itself down with the little things. The staff were slightly brusk, and the toilets were not exactly the cleanest. The tables were poorly layed and my particular table rocked erratically on the uneven floor. All small things granted, but still annoying. We were a party of 11 (one a small disabled child) and the Quays did fit us all in at very short notice so I must give them credit for that. The downside of that is that we were positioned on our own away from the rest of the diners and basically in the entrance hall. And here comes my first real complaint. - Located as we were, we were close to the kitchen and the waiters passed by regularly carrying hot food plates - over my nephews head. Not nearby, not close, but directly over his head. I was not one but impressed with this. But let's move on. The food itself, for those who enjoy seafood seemed to be very pleasing to them. I noted from the menu that their steaks were only available as medium - well done. No rare etc. I opted for the southern fried chicken burger with chips. The burger was very tasty and the chips were terrible. Terrible as in not homemade, hand cut chips. They were the prepacked chips that fish and chip shops use. Only not as nice. Given that they are going for the 'posh' feel, this was an epic fail. EPIC. One of our party was a vegetarian (and still is) and was very disappointed to find absolutely no vegetarian options. Unless you like deep fried brie. Which they don't. So apart from the one unsuitable option, there was nothing. Except chips, which as mentioned before, were simply terrible. All in all, it is geared up for those who like seafood, and I'm sure they do a mighty fine job of those dishes. For the rest of us, I wouldn't overly recommend it.

It is child friendly with a full kids menu. I personally like the saloon style seating in The Windmill Grill because it gives the feeling that you are eating in an actual restaurant rather than a takeaway. Oh and it is open 7 days a week so if you are stuck for somewhere to eat there is always the Windmill Grill. The staff are great too, they always sort you out with big portions and if you get a single battered sausage they will through in a few free ones. Top Notch.
