In the mornings before class, when we would have a ten minute break from class and at lunch times, myself and some other classmates studying at Screenwise would often pop next door to cafe Dendu.
It's a small coffee shop and purveyor of sandwiches and drinks located on Mary Street, that wins my vote, not just because they sell delicious coffee, but also because their menu is one of wit and simple reference that while charming and innocent could hold the power to making a child cry.
Their ham sandwich is called 'The Babe', their Turkey Sandwich, 'Big Bird', the Chicken, 'Chicken Run' and so on and so forth. Beloved children's movie characters sent to an abattoir, lead into the kill room and sent into what I like to call, "Forever Sleep."
I, in my sick state of mind, like to imagine a child with a puzzled look on his face surveying the menu blu-tacked to the counter and asking his father, "Why did they put Big Bird on a sandwich? Does this mean there's no Sesame Street anymore?"
And of course the answer is clear and comforting, "No, it's just the name of the sandwich." But this line of questioning is sure to lead these forming minds to the conclusion that all meats that they gorge on were once friendly animals like the pig in Charlotte's Web, the Horse from Mr Ed and if they existed, I would bet my bottom dollar there would be a Pikachu Sticky Bun out there somewhere. read more
