I remembered Uptown Grill and spotted salmon cakes on the menu. That's when I knew I had my sales pitch. My logic was flawless. Every senior citizen, advanced-age citizen, seasoned citizen, or as some folks say, "old people," loves a good salmon cake. I presented the evidence to Mom, and she immediately signed off on the operation. The first challenge was that Yelp didn't list a website or online ordering option. No problem. After a little detective work, I located their ordering site with ease and placed our order. For me: - Scrapple, egg, and Swiss cheese on a croissant - Tuna melt with tomatoes on white bread For Mom and my sister: - Salmon cake platter with scrambled eggs, American cheese, and home fries - Pulled chicken salad sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, and provolone on wheat About 15 minutes later, we arrived at Uptown Grill. Several people were waiting for food, which is usually a good sign. The place itself is a tiny hole-in-the-wall operation with a few tables tucked into the lobby area of a commercial building. Despite being busy, the ladies behind the counter remained friendly and professional. When my order was ready about 10 minutes later, they carefully reviewed everything and even asked if I needed condiments or silverware. That's the kind of customer service that earns bonus points. Once we got home, the food faced the first two tests: appearance and aroma. Passed. Everything looked good. Passed. Everything smelled good. Then came the salmon cake. CASE UPDATE: Mission Failure. Mom absolutely loved the home fries. The scrambled eggs were good too. But the salmon cake? She hated it. Not disliked. Not wasn't impressed. Hated it. She thought it tasted like a store-bought salmon patty and wasn't a fan of the texture. My carefully crafted salmon cake surprise had officially collapsed under questioning. Fortunately, my sister thoroughly enjoyed her pulled chicken salad sandwich, so the family investigation wasn't a complete disaster. Now let's get to the real stars of the show. As a longtime scrapple sandwich and tuna melt enthusiast, I know these sandwiches are often prepared incorrectly. Too many places serve an open-faced tuna sandwich and call it a tuna melt. News flash: that's not a tuna melt. I'm proud to report that Uptown Grill understands the assignment. The tuna melt was outstanding. The bread was buttery, golden brown, and grilled to perfection with a firm crust. It looked exactly how a tuna melt should look, and thankfully, it tasted even better. Then there was the scrapple sandwich. Ladies and gentlemen, we have another winner. The scrapple was the perfect thickness and size, but the real test was the cook. Uptown Grill nailed it. The outside had that crispy texture scrapple lovers crave, while the inside maintained just enough softness to deliver that classic scrapple flavor. That's not easy to do, but they got it right. If you haven't figured it out by now, the tuna melt and scrapple sandwich were absolute home runs. Will we return? Absolutely. Will we order the salmon cake again? Let's just say that case has been permanently closed. Uptown Grill turned out to be a fantastic little hidden gem. Great service, excellent sandwiches, and a reminder that sometimes the best food comes from the smallest places.
