I work in the oilfield. Well, not actually in the field anymore, those days are in the rear view mirror, but an acct mgr for an oilfield service company. And that job lets me still run the roads sometimes and the best part is all the little towns I go thru. This time I was passing thru Pleasanton, Tx. And lunch time. A quick search of Yelp and I was pulling in the parking lot of Cafe Chris. A chic name for a good small town restaurant. A lot of reviews mentioned the chicken fried steak and I haven't had one in a long time. So I went with the CFS sandwich thinking it would be smaller, as I'd already seen a few delivered to tables. So I was wrong. The sandwich has the same CFS just on Texas toast. First it's huge. Second it's not all breading. There's a lot of meat under that fried layer of batter. I immediately got a to-go box. Dinner for later. It was an awesome meal. Got some cream gravy for a little dipping sauce. And the dinner later was oh so good. Can't wait until the next trip thru. The customer service was unacceptable. Our experience at Cafe Chris in Pleasanton was extremely disappointing, and honestly, the customer service was the worst part. I had an issue with my chicken-fried steak that I was sharing with my sister, so I sent it back to be replaced. No big deal mistakes happen, and I was completely understanding about that. What was NOT okay was what happened afterward. While we were waiting, the cooks repeatedly looked over at us and laughed. Whether they were laughing about us or not, that is how it came across, and it made us extremely uncomfortable. The waiter's tone and attitude only made the situation worse. Then the owner started talking to us from across the room, which caused other customers to look over. When she finally came over, we explained calmly how the situation made us feel. Instead of simply acknowledging our concern, she responded by saying, "Well, I told the chef not to laugh and not enjoy their time and work." That response completely missed the point. Nobody was asking the employees to not enjoy working. We were asking for basic professionalism and respect toward customers. Then there was the bill. The main item was removed, but we were still charged for the side, and the pricing did not add up correctly. For the prices being charged, I expected much better service and attention to detail. And honestly, the part that pushed this experience over the edge was being told by the owner not to "spread" this or tell other people about what happened. If you don't want customers sharing their experiences, the answer isn't to tell them to stay quiet it's to handle the situation better in the first place. I wasn't looking for an argument or trying to cause a scene. I simply expected to eat my meal, have a normal customer experience, and leave. Instead, we left feeling uncomfortable, blamed, and disappointed. Food can be fixed. A bad order can be replaced. But the way you treat your customers is what people remember. I would not return based on this experience, and I hope management takes the feedback seriously. read more

I'm very very disappointed. We've been coming here for years and never have had any real issues other than occasionally being mis-charged several times and all the flies that are in there. But today we ordered a chicken fried steak and everything tasted great! It's just the steak was very tough so we asked for a chicken fried chicken swap. Well the kitchen is open for everyone to see. Well as soon as the server takes the food back they all group up and look at me and everyone sitting with at the table. You can obviously tell things were being said and they begin to laugh. We were a bit uncomfortable and stated to our server that we no longer wanted the plate. Well the owner then yells to our table half way across the restaurant. Instead of coming off respectful and calmly talking to us about the situation. Instead she was very confrontational. Which made us very uncomfortable we were not trying to make the situation bigger than it was. We had told the owner that the one waitress was very rude and every time we come in she is like that. The manager stated she was aware of how she was because they've had other complaints. Yet she still acts the same and treats people disrespectfully. Then the owner came up to the table to continue basically arguing with us about that her kitchen is not like that and that she would go ahead and tell her staff to not laugh or have a good time at work every again. Which was not the problem but the owners attitude escalated it.The whole situation was not needed and then we when we went to pay we were mis-charged again after all of that. We will not come back after that the whole situation could have been handled better. We're very disappointed and hope they fix the way they handle situations in the future with their customers. read more

The staff members are so nice and welcoming and even when the restaurant is packed, they still do their best and give you amazing service. Cafe Chris is great! We walked in at 7:25p not realizing they had modified their hours due to COVID; closing today was 7:30p. As my husband and I discussed leaving after we saw their closing time on the menu, a nice woman over heard us and walked up, greeted us nicely, assured us that we need not rush, and encouraged us to enjoy our dinner. I wasn't planing to eat lunch here but our other location appear to be closed. Parking lot was packed as was the restaurant, looking good so far as crowded restaurants usually have great food. Ordered a huge chicken fried steak and hamburger steak with baked potato. Real plates metal utensils paper napkins a bit crowded inside of staples are close together to fit in more customers of which they had plenty. Service was good especially as busy as they were, had almost every table filled. Food was very good, Home style cooking, comfort food. Cost for both meals was right at $20. I came into this cafe after reading about it here on Yelp. The only reason this review isn't a 4 star review is because of the Tuna Salad- I'll elaborate in a bit. The service was excellent. Immediately as I entered, I was greeted with a loud welcome from the check out counter. That welcome, plus the decoration and the abundance of locals, made this place feel less like a cafe in a strip center and more like a home-y cafe. I placed an order to go so that I could get back to my work in the hotel room. I ordered a Cobb salad with a scoop of Tuna Salad. The length of time between order and getting my food in hand was minimal, and it came with the same level of service. Definitely come here if you want fast service with a smile. (Now the only negative) The tuna salad is the only downside. It is basically just tuna mixed with a crap load of (too much) mayo. No veggies, no visible seasoning, no additional flavors... It was really disappointing since that was what I was really craving and I was trying to avoid the "Mayo Salad" of places like Subway. I figured that a homestyle cafe would have homestyle tuna- one with flavor and a presence of veggies like celery, carrots, and pickles. Something. I'm sure by the crowd that this cafe can make a mean plate of comfort food, but if you're coming here for their tuna, then you'd be just as good with going to a fast food deli chain for a bit cheaper price. read more

There are a lot of choices on this Cafe's menu, but in general they are fresh and filling choices. I ordered a sandwich and my lunch partner had the chicken salad, both of which were good. It's very busy at lunch though and our food took awhile, though the service was very friendly. I'll be back to try other things when I'm in town again! Anywhere that has great healthy menu options stays on my list. Originally I gave his restaurant 3 stars, but realized that as far as choices go in Pleasanton - well, there aren't many.
