We'd never been here but were in town at lunch so we decided to try it. First, if you're looking for a fancy restaurant this place isn't it but if you're looking for good Mexican food - this is it. The chips were standard tortilla chips but the salsa was flavorful and with heat. I'm a salsa snob and my wife hates that I'm hard to please when it comes to salsa - this salsa passed the 'test'. I had the small (lunch) plate which came with a hard taco, cheese enchilada, rice, beans and tortilla. The beans had great flavor - definitely not from a can. I usually let the rice sit on my plate when I have Mexican food but this rice had a good texture and flavor. The taco was very good - the ground beef was moist and had good flavor. The enchilada was what I expect an enchilada to taste like. The tortillas were thick but very soft. My wife had carne guisada, cheese enchilada, rice beans and tortilla. The carne guisada was tender with a flavorful gravy! We will definitely be coming back! Again, a very unassuming place that has great food! read more

I discovered Mata's café in 2023 and have eaten there regularly; sometimes weekly. I like that it is a small, family owned business and it is very simple and a comfortable café. I have had different dinner plates and have never been disappointed. The café is clean and comfortable. The service is always very good. Prices are reasonable. I'll try and make this one short and sweet. Hands down the best Tex-Mex breakfast in the world! Next to my mother and grandmother some of the best homemade tortillas I've ever had! If you live in Atascosa/Wilson county this place is a must! Great service, friendly people, and good prices!! Small quaint clean, and a quiet restaurant. Everything on the menu is great. In my personal opinion "Terrible Service", wait staff spent the entire time speaking and what appeared to be gossiping with table of guests and ignored requests for condiments to complement the food. No drink refills for anyone at the table. . Food was cold according to all diners in our party and the children even said their food was worse than cafeteria food. read more

Dine in now. The salsa is too spicy. It needed salt. The chips are greasy. The waitress was going to give us menus from a table she just waited on. She was very nice about getting us sanitized ones. The enchiladas and the tacos were excellent. read more

This is a wonderful local place to have a great breakfast. The staff is awesome and very responsive to your requests. The breakfast tacos are wonderfully tasteful and filling. I have been here twice. The first time I had 3 breakfast tacos (chorizo and egg x2, bacon egg and potatoes) and a pancake. I did not eat again until 7:00 PM. The second time I had only 2 tacos, I added potatoes to both, and could not eat them all. The total for 2 tacos and a coffee was under $6. That is the deal of deals. Good food, nice service, and great prices. I was visiting the local hospital and need to get a late lunch. They had a lunch special for $5.95. Two enchiladas and a crispy taco with rice and beans. I don't know what it is about Mata's that makes me keep coming back for more maybe it's the small town hospitality maybe it's the great service maybe it's the great food. Maybe it's all of these things. I think the food here is great and they get it out super fast. This is the kind of place that makes me wake up at 7 AM on a Sunday to leave the house by 730 drive 30 minutes to get there, then sit outside and wait 30 minutes so that I'm the first person in line. If they open at 8:30 in the morning guess what the place is full by 835. read more

I had the crispy taco plate it was very good. My partner had the enchilada plate. The food was hot and came out fast. But the service was not up to par. I am not sure if it because we were women but she did her duty took our order and brought our drinks. And then brought out our food. Got only one come back and that was it. Near downtown is a plus. Clean, old school cafe. Quick to get the meal out. Hard-working waitress. Otherwise not remarkable. Brown walls with no artwork except a few religious items on a window. Tried three breakfast tacos. Papa ranchero was good. The other two, egg and bean and potato and egg were bland. It was the first time in months I have added salt to a restaurant meal. I sure do not understand why this place has only one review, but I can attest to it having a 5 star rating. While this maybe a small local restaurant the food was amazing and staff friendly and quick. Enchiladas were great, tortillas fresh, salsa nice and spicy, beans, rice taco meat cooked to perfection with just the right seasoning. Tortillas were so good I bought a dozen to take home to Arizona. It's off the beaten patch in the historic downtown area but well worth the short drive. I hope to eat here again if we are back in the area. Great job. read more

Matas was recommended. When we walked in and it was packed with locals, we were excited. It looks like the set of a 1955 movie and that alone made it great. The food was five star as was the service. Don't know when we'll get back to that part of the state, but it is on my "to do" list and we'll definitely make time for Mata's. read more

Wow... Im really not that excited about eating out, just do it when i dont feel like cooking so take a chance on paying too much for food that might not even be good but its a chance everyone takes when they dine out... But today i decided to give the enchilada plate a try... It was amazingly delish!! Beans were perfect rice was nice and fluffy seasoned just right. And enchiladas were cheesy with right amount of sauce! So yes i give it a thumbs up! This will be my spot for those days im just too tired to cook dinner but expect a tasty meal. 100 times better then ANGELICAS NO LIE!! read more
