My wife and I recently visited Cafe Chinois and had a mixed but overall positive experience. I ordered the Thai Chicken, and it was outstanding--well-balanced, flavorful, and exactly what I was hoping for. My wife ordered the Vietnamese Lemongrass Chili Chicken, but unfortunately it was extremely salty, even by my standards, and I tend to enjoy saltier foods. We also ordered two cocktails that came out much sweeter than expected. It left us wondering whether some additional tasting and quality control in both the kitchen and bar could help improve consistency. That said, our server, John, was excellent throughout the evening. He was attentive, professional, and genuinely cared about our experience. When we mentioned the issue with my wife's meal, managers Jack and David both checked on us personally and worked hard to make things right. Their involvement and concern did not go unnoticed and reflected a commitment to customer service. We've visited Cafe Chinois over the years and have noticed changes since the passing of the previous owner and the family's transition into running the restaurant. The menu has evolved, and the overall atmosphere feels a little different than it once did. During our visit, there was some trash on the floor that remained for a while, suggesting that attention to detail may not be quite where it used to be. Even so, the excellent service from John, Jack, and David, along with the quality of my entrée, showed that the restaurant still has a strong foundation. I love coming here for lunch! It is always delicious, calming, and a great environment. A girlfriend and I recently met here for lunch. The lunch specials are still huge portions and a great price. We were immediately seated for a later lunch (around 1pm), and the large dining room wasn't crowded at all. The team working were all super friendly- the hostesses at the door were really nice. Our waitress, Amber, was really fun, and was great with helping me figure out what to eat. There are so many good options that I really like, so I gave her a few and asked her to surprise me! She picked the Thai beef stir fry which is one I always love! It comes with a spring roll too. My friend ordered the lettuce wraps as her meal because that is a full-sized entree portion. My wife and I decided cafe Chinois was the perfect place to enjoy New Year's Eve dinner, and we weren't disappointed. We never are when we go there. The decor is very different - you might call it contemporary Victorian Asian Fusion. A bit cluttered but still pleasing. The dinners are always pleasing and well presented. We shared an appetizer of six delicate crab rangoons. Each stuffed with a mixture of crab meat and herb cream cheese. Delicious. I had the Korean Beef Bugogli , sizzling beef on a bed of steaming vegetables in a rich dark sauce with sides of Bugogli sauce, rice, and Kim Chi. Outstanding. My wife had the Shrimp Pad Thai with glass noodles in a pleasant peanut sauce sprinkled with peanuts. Fantastic. The restaurant was packed, but service was excellent. We tried Cafe Chinois on a Friday evening. We were both impressed with the decor of the restaurant. The artwork, bold colors, and decorations definitely made a positive impression on our meal; it was very well done. The cha goi appetizer was good. For $10, we received six small spring rolls. While tasty, the wrapper had an odd, chewy texture that detracted a bit from the spring roll. I will likely try another appetizer next time. I ordered the lemongrass-chili chicken, extra hot for my entree. This was very good and the chef found a nice balance between being spicy without being punishing. It was definitely one of the best versions of this dish I've eaten in a long time. The large serving would have been better if served without so much of the sauce. My dining companion ordered the lemongrass pork chops. The very generous serving consisted of two large pork chops, two fried eggs, along with rice, nuoc cham, and pickled carrots / daikon. I was able to sample this dish and thought it was absolutely outstanding; it was easily the best lemongrass pork chop that I've ever tried. I wish the dish included more of the pickled carrots and daikon. For dessert we split the coconut cake. The serving was easily enough for two to share and was excellent. It was very light and just the right amount of coconut. It was a delicious end to our meal. Highly recommended. The service was friendly and efficient, although at times not especially attentive. All in all, I thought Cafe Chinois was very good and an unusually reasonable value given the quality of the food, portion sizes, and lovely ambiance. This is a very strong 4-star restaurant and one we will visit again. read more

What a gem! Everything was delicious. This is my new go to Thai restaurant. I had a Southern Thai Iced Tea, Thai Orange Beef, and Fried Rice. It was all so, so good. I had the beef cooked mildly for spice but it still had great flavor and sometimes restaurants will miss the mark on that but this place did a great job delivering on flavor. The portion size was large enough that I was able to have leftovers for lunch the next day (and they were still great!) Now I can't wait to go back. It's going to be hard to try something new because the orange beef was SO good but so many items on the menu sound good. This new restaurant is located next to Anytime Fitness. Once you see the tree trunk that is wrapped in red and blue lights, you have arrived. Ordered to-go on the second day of their opening through the phone. Originally ordered Korean Japchae, Thai Larb Gai, and Vietnamese aubergine. Received a call from a private number 22 minutes later that left a voicemail telling me that they do not have the Vietnamese aubergine. I wonder if they even tried to go to Saigon Market to get some? Turns out they did not have a lot of their dinner menu items available. For the first week, the only dinner entrees they have available at this time are the Vietnamese Nem Nuong wrap, Vietnamese Bahn Xeo, Thai Southern chicken, and Chinese pepper steak. They were able to complete the rest of my order by the time I arrived 36 minutes later. There was a lot to look at inside. They had wicker type chairs, chandeliers, fresh flowers, tons of large art pictures of people dressed in traditional Asian wear, with some having their own individual wall light. Even the bathroom was decorated similarly- a bit much. At least you won't be bored while going to the bathroom. There is a small bar inside and outdoor seating of four tables for two each. I really enjoyed the Thai Larb Gai ($9). It had tons of ground chicken mixed with toasted rice powder, green onion, herbs, sliced red onion, and chopped lettuce, with a wonderfully tart and salty flavor. I wasn't very impressed with the Korean Japchae ($13). I've had better. It was lacking in flavor and it was missing a few ingredients as advertised- did not have tofu or snow peas. Nevertheless, I enjoyed that it had tons of (the other) vegetables. I called to see if it was a menu mistake, which it was not. The general manager, Mike was apologetic and graciously offered a refund or a gift card. I forgot to request chili sauce so I was relieved to see that they already included chili garlic sauce and a chili condiment in my to-go bag. Lunch menu is available Tuesday-Friday from 11am-2pm. Next time, I'll have to try dine-in. Hopefully they won't be out of any food at that time. read more

When you first walk in, the smell that fills the room will make you hungry if you weren't already. It seemed to be a busy night when me & our party of 5 came in to dine but we only had to wait a few minutes to be seated. We were greeted by our server pretty soon after. The menu was straightforward. We ordered a bunch of entrees and shared. Everything we had was amazing and plenty of food that we still had to take some home. The decor in the room we were seated was really cool. You could tell someone took the time to put up some unique pieces. We did order alcoholic drinks that took a lot longer to get to our table than we expected, considering we could see the bartender from our table & there were only 2 guests seated in front of them. Low key I didn't want to review Cafe Chinois so that I can still get a table whenever I want. While the location is on the opposite side of town from us, it's nice to know we can show up and get a table without much fuss (or an hour long wait like their sister restaurant Indochine). The quality of food is so good, and the staff and ambiance are great too. We never go wrong with an order of Cha Gio or their Panang Curry. 5/5 for being one of the best places to get some yummy curry or noodles in Wilmy. read more

My friend knows how much I love Indochine so for my birthday she brought me to Cafe Chinois, which is owned by the same woman (what I was told). It was wonderful. This location is so much closer to where I visit. The location is in a strip mall so parking could be an issue when they are busy. To my understanding the week before on Tuesday, they were packed. The interior is filled with the owners treasured art work. Her daughter (what I was told) made the big beautiful vase that sits in the middle of one room. There are chandeliers and it is just comfortable. We ordered from the lunch menu. $10.95. It comes with a meat and one side dish. Our side was the spring-roll that was very tasty and the sauce sweet. I ordered the Massaman Curry- Cardamom, cinnamon, cumin with potatoes, carrots, onions, peanuts and coconut milk with Chicken as the meat. The flavor was out of this world. My friend ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice- Fried rice with pineapple, cashew nuts, eggs and onions, topped with scallions and cilantro with her meat also being chicken. She did not care for the flavors at first, but after a few bites she got used to it. She tasted mine and really like it, so I gave her some of my extra sauce and mixed it in with her rice and she really enjoyed her dish then. I was glad she at least tried something new. She is not as adventurous as I, but I grew up with East Indian food so I know and love these spices. Lord, I wish I could remember our servers name. A bubbly, sweet, always smiling young lady. She did an excellent job. The hostess too was very nice and wanted to make sure we were happy where she sat us. I look forward to visiting again and trying another new dish. Five stars! read more

If you live in Wilmington and like Asian/southeast Asian food, you probably have been to Indochine Restaurant. And Cafe Chinois is a sister restaurant of Indochine. So if you like indochine, you very likely will like this place, too. The interior takes on a more Chinese vibe than Indochine with all the painting/pictures of old Shanghai-style and Manchurian women. The environment is nice and clean. Though the decorations seem more Chinese, they actually focus on Thai and Vietnamese food, with some signature Americanized Asian food such as Chinese orange beef and Korean beef BBQ, but the choices are rather limited. We tried their Thai Tom Yum-which came in a cute jar, fried calamari, and Thai dumplings for appetizers. For entrees we got drunken noodles and Korean beef BBQ. They are all good. The server was nice, too. We had a good experience. I was talking to a Chinese friend who moved from NJ about this new place (which it is not. It's new to me because I never got around to check it out until last week.) He said it's fine to eat but not authentic compared to the ethnic food in NY/NJ. But to me, it's close. It's convenient. It's not a Chinese restaurant in the first place, so it's not in the competition ;). The food is nice. I like Thai food and their noodles and soup are both great to me. Whether it's authentic Thai or not, I don't qualify to judge. For a restaurant that does Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese cuisine with French inspirations, I think it does a good job. This is ABSOLUTELY my MOST Favorite!!! The ONLY PLACE in Wilmington I go for Pad Thai amongst other favs, but the Pad Thai is the most authentic I've ever had anywhere near here! The ambiance is awesome, so chill and delivers super zen vibes even though they're almost ALWAYS packed Full!!! I always go at lunch, because their daytime staff are the best! The Lunch waitress who it would appear never takes a day off is the most amazing server I've ever had anywhere I have literally watched her wait on an entirely full restaurant take care of the bar and train a new waitress under her all at the same time she is magical! This place has great food, but I don't like their dining room set up at all. They have their tables way too close together. It feels like the people at the table next to you are basically dining with you at your table. Forget any privacy or personal conversation. I get why they are doing it; they want to fit more people in so they can make a better profit. Which is understandable, however it's actually having the opposite effect. Twice in the last 6 weeks I've been with a group of people who were trying to decide where to have lunch or dinner. In both instances Café Chinois was brought up as a possible choice. But each time someone in the group said they didn't want to go there because they didn't like the tight seating. So both times the whole group went somewhere else to eat. I would definitely go here more often if they had a different dining room layout. But if crowding doesn't bother you, they do have good food. read more

Lunch at Café Chinois was spot on. This place is owned by Indochine, another wonderful restaurant that's much larger, busier, and quite noisy. I call this place the "little sister", a place that's feels more elegant, less crowded, and with a relaxing and enjoyable feel. I sat at the bar and had a glass of wine and ordered the Korean Japchae with beef. The bowl was beautifully presented with the glass noodles, julienned carrots, bok choy, tofu, thinly sliced wood ear mushrooms, and a light sauce. I absolutely loved the flavors and combination of everything but I would have liked it to have some broth, as it was a little on the dry side, but really no complaints. It was a good sized portion, in which I brought some home to enjoy later on. The bartender/waiter was attentive and helpful with my questions with the menu. The interior was lovely. On the one negative side is that a couple came in and sat in another room. The manager, who sat at the end of the bar, told the bartender to comp the couple one entrée. I was a little irked about it. If you want to comp someone's meal, mention it quietly so other customers don't hear the conversation. I almost spoke up to ask, "How about me?" With that, I still give this place 5 stars and will be back. read more

The place looks like a bordello on the lower east side of NYC. I ordered the Larb and it was bland and did not taste right, so the manager who was so nice took it and did not charge me. I ordered a chicken dish with the word Southern in it and it was OK-just fried pieces of what they said was chicken breast in a limited sauce-I wish it had more sauce but it was plentiful and had somewhat of a ginger taste. I might return when I'm next in WLM. read more
