I stumbled upon this place while looking for another coffee place. This little hole in the wall has the some of the best empanadas I have ever tasted! The inside is small and the menu isn't that big. We ordered the chicken empanadas and cafe con leche. The empanadas could have used more chicken, but you can tell it was made fresh on the spot and it was very tasty. My hunt for the best Espresso in town continues with the Venezuelan Cafe Canela in the West Sunrise/Weston area. Easy access from Strd 84 or Weston Rd into the Westgate Square plaza. The friendly staff, Diana, brewed me a strong cup of their Columbian Espresso for $2.99. Six small tables for my choosing, and sat near the door as another patron happily ate his rice and black beans close by as we chatted about Venezuelan cheeses. The Tequeno spear with cheese was incredible - after first bite the white melted cheese dripped out. We are Venezuelan, and we don't have the good fortune of living near a place that serves traditional food. This place hits every craving so hard. You can't really go wrong with anything here. As a matter of fact, we usually order just about one of everything. I especially love the tequeños and the empanadas, which are corn based (and better). The cachapas are always delicious too. Any of the drinks and juices would pair perfectly with a meal here. The locale is unassuming, just in a strip mall. The most expensive Arepas in the world are made with a homemade devise instead of making big arepas like the originals which are made handmade. This has the audacity to charge you for a tostiarepa the same as for a handmade arepa that is 1/4 of the size of a regular arepa you get from any other Venezuelan place. Quaint little shop in Weston. Packed full of goodies to choose from (seats about 10 people per occupancy sign). It's cluttered but I feel like it adds to the charm of the place. She greeted me when I came in and I ordered the shredded beef arepa with a side of fries, a samba bar, and guarana can. Arepa - I've never had one where the arepa was so clearly crisp all around, it was enough to hold the filling. The shredded beef was placed evenly and dropped its sauce into the arepa. This was the first one where I didn't lose all the filling before getting to the end of the arepa. It's also the first one that the arepa held up to the sauce! So yay for that! Fries - golden and crisp. A bit soggy towards the bottom fries but that's par for the course when you get takeout Onto things they don't make: The samba is like a wafer cookie coated in chocolate - yummm! And the Guarana is almost like a different version of ginger ale... more flavor, although I think it'd be acquired taste - pour it into a glass with an orange slice and it'll help offset the taste if you have the time. Now this is a Sunday at 4:30p and I didn't notice they closed at 5:00p and everyone was cleaning to leave. (which is normal in any business). But the young woman Mariangle said she can make me some Colombian Empanadas. So I ordered 4. Let me tell you for starters I could only eat 2. These things were HUGE. They are like 3 times a regular Columbia's empanada and they were FANTASTIC!!! The hot sauce they have has just the right kick without over powering the fantastic seasoned tasting meat and doe which you can tell it's handmade. As I was leaving I asked her if they make those in house or do they buy them. They make these things in house. I can tell you this this is not the last time I'm coming here the service of these young ladies, the attention that they gave me, and of course food makes this little place a fantastic place to come to. I can tell that they really take pride in what they do and how they do it. I highly recommend it if you want some good Colombian food. We stopped in this morning for a quick breakfast while on vacation from Tampa. We ordered 2 empanadas (1 chicken and 1 ground beef). They were ok. Then we ordered the American breakfast ($8.99 we thought was a little pricy) which included 2 eggs, toast, bacon, coffee or tea. ... I have to agree with most of the other yelpers on this restaurant. The food is good when its fresh , but its not always. Do not expect to leave with pocket change. Its like ur buying diamonds in this very small place. Worst of all is the service. I have been overcharged and charged different prices (depending on which family member rings me up)several times. Which is why i stopped burning my money there. They are very rude. They never smile or say please or thank you. The worst staff member is the older blonde lady that i belebelieve Is the mother. Im not fluent in spanish and she made it very clear that she didn't like that. She always overcharged me and always threw my food at me. Shes ignored me several times. This Venezuelan restaurant is right next to my house in Sunrise, FL. Its been there for the past 5 years and this past weekend (March 2010) was the first time I tried it. Most people that I know had tried the restaurant, but their experience hasn't been the best. I finally decided to take my wife for lunch on a Saturday to see how the food was. I was not impress with the quality of the food neither its price. I got a "cachapa", a passion fruit juice and a "pirulin" box and my wife got an "arepa" and an oraje juice, our total bill was $35.00 and they still asked me for a tip!!!!!! The menu doesn't have a great variety and the quality is not the best. I guess I was expecting something better like the Bread Shop in Fort Lauderdale or Date Aqui Pana in Miami. I really hope they improve the quality and prices soon. It wont be until next time I see another review from Cafe Canela that I would give them a second chance... read more

I love coming here. The owner and staff are absolutely friendly and make the best with the space they have. Pros: The cachapas are delicious, get them with nata and queso rallado on top (sierra nevada) and you can't go wrong. The tequeños are some of the best, as well as the chicha with cinnamon and condensed milk. Cons: The food is pricey and the amount of food you get, compared to other places fails in comparison. All the other dishes that I have tried on the menu are tasty, just not abundant. For example, Arepa Reina Pepiada, Pabellon Criollo and Asado negro and their daily soups. Overall I will keep coming back to this place because the staff makes you feel like part of the family. I just won't be going if I want huge servings. read more

I visit Cafe Canela at least once a week. I am most impressed by the quality of the food and on how clean the place is kept. The owner Mr. Ramon Peraza is courteous and on top of the business. All the food is good. Prices are very fair considering the location and the fact that the menu is different from most restaurants in South Florida. The Ground Beef Empanadas and the Cachapas are extraordinary. Tequeños are very tasty, these I recommend to dip in Ketchup. If you are going to sit for Lunch, the ASADO NEGRO is out of this world. Highly recommended if you wish to enter the world of homemade Venezuelan food. read more

Stopped in a shopping center in Weston to find breakfast and saw this little Spanish cafe next to Subway and a Mailbox place so it was an easy choice. It turned out to be a Venezuelan cafe that serves breakfast, fresh juices, arepas, empanadas, sandwiches, pastry and coffee (my new favorite place for espresso now). There's also Spanish TV on (currently CNN) so I can learn some Spanish. I ordered a cheese and a pork arepa. The Venezuelan arepas are different that they don't melt the cheese like the ones I am used to at outdoor fairs although it is made from corn and is much lighter. I enjoy listening to the espresso machine firing up a 4 oz. cup which makes my day. They also have Americano coffee, cafe de leche and espresso. I like the cilantro sauce with my cheese arepas. The food was actually OK but the service was TERRIBLE! I walked in and said good morning and none of the people from the restaurant even looked at me. I asked about the food and they barely responded. Then I went to pay and try to have a conversation with the lady and she just asked me to pay the bill on a tablet that FORCES you to leave a tip. My first time here and never coming back. My arepa was just ok, not delicious, not good, and seems like they put the white cheese with fear because there was just a little of it. I also asked for a "Papelon con limon", a typical venezuelan refreshing beverage..well...horrible, it tasted too acid and needed more sugar. This Venezuelan restaurant is the worst of all Venezuelan restaurants in South Florida, here is why... The food is very poor in quality, the meat, doesn't have any flavor, the arepas dough is hard, the empanadas are dry and on top of that it is extremely EXPENSIVE. Another interesting aspect was that at the end of our meals we ask for the total and the owner of the place didn't give us the total, we ask again and he didn't respond, he came to the table and presented a receipt for $43.76 and the bill was not displayed. We had 4 empanadas, 2 areas, 4 Susies and 1 Soda. They charged us $43.76 for something that we could have gotten in Doral, Miami Beach or any other Venezuelan Restaurant in South Florida and even Orlando for half the price and the food quality would have been better. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE. NEVER AGAIN! Este restaurante venezolano es el peor de todos los restaurantes venezolanos en el sur de Florida, esta el la razón del por qué ... This place charge you 8% fot service they do not rendered without making you aware of it upfront. You have to stand up for your food wrapped up in paper plates, and once you are done, you take the waste to the garbage trash yourself as well; so no service provided for you at all.
