Blackbird is situated in quite a small space but has lots to offer. Not only they brew good coffee but also sell art, 60-70s style furniture, t-shirts and vintage bicycles. It is one of the first espresso bars in Utrecht combining the possibility of drinking coffee with shopping. Blackbird uses Koffieslab beans which are nice but sometimes have a sour note (don't kill the messenger, it's a personal preference). Apart from coffee Blackbird has a small menu with breakfast, dessert and refreshing drinks options. Baked goodies are made from biological products and are quite ok, but unfortunately very inconsistent and definitely not the best in town. Overall, Blackbird is a nice place for a cup of coffee and definitely a noticeable stop in search for interesting vintage items. My huge board of food (soup, salad, bread with croquette, bread with ham cheese and egg) as 9.50 and my husbands 3 eggs, ham and cheese was 8.50. Great deal. Not gourmet- but it will fill you up. It was too much bread for me, so I just ate everything else, and the bread was sort of flabby- I would have preferred it toasted.

The cafe is quite big and also has a terrace in front of it. There are a lot of seats and tables but still they could be all taken if you come here during the weekend because it's such a popular place. You can come here for coffee with pastries, lunch with sandwiches/salads and a fresh juice or drinks and snacks. I tried a cheese cake with berry rose sauce and beetroot nut cake and they were both delicious. The coffee is also nice. The interior is lovely. Lots of plants and cute decoration and the whole place just has this super chill vibe. The staff is friendly and the prices are good. This is my new favorite place in Utrecht!

Large portions so you can certainly share plates. The meatball was large and like a big patty, served with a grilled onion and bread that was not my favorite. Most other items were fried with thicker outer breading and then was served with more slices of bread. During lunch, they had a good selection of brunch items too like pistachio strawberry french toast and lox toast. Interior is cute and centrally located. I ordered the Gehaktbal with a side of fries. The waitress said that if we get a meatball dish anywhere, it should be from this establishment. Did it live up to her claims? Not really. While I loved the sauce, the meatball was a bit too soft (I am impressed though by how the chef was able to cook this in a pan without it breaking apart). It felt like I was eating meat sauce rather than a meatball. Texture wise, it left a lot to be desired. The boyfriend got Melanzane (it's basically like a lasagna, but with eggplant layers instead of pasta layers). To me, it tasted super bland, and the lack of texture made me think this dish was made for people without teeth. Like it was just such a soggy mess. It came with a side of salad. The salad was fresh, but I left most of it untouched as I found the dressing barely palatable. Save yourself the €17,50 and order something else. Lastly, we tried the tropical smoothie. A bit overpriced, but it tasted very fresh.
