I wheeled into the Current Cafeteria on a whim one day. Its hard to find good soul food, so when I…read moresee it n my area I make an effort to stop in. In this case I was glad that I did. From the outside the place looks kind of run down. Inside is the same way. Parking is limited to one side of the building, and is in that private lot only. Its kind of a pain to get into and out of being at a red light. Seating is the old 1970's welded up steel frame seating, where you cant move anything. Lucky there were a few tables on the wall. Its definitely not built for comfort. You order from a line like a traditional cafeteria from back in the day. The menu is a hand written board. The staff was friendly and helpful. I had the fried chicken with cabbage and lima beans, with rolls on the side. I added a tea to drink, and my total was $6.29 with tax. The prices here are great! They also take credit cards, which is great also. When I visited it was after lunch time, maybe 1pm in the afternoon. There was nobody in there except for the staff. The food was still hot and fresh tasting. Fried chicken was as good as I have had. It was cooked up nice with the perfect balance of taste, breading, crunch, and inside doneness. It wasnt greasy at all. The sides were spot on as well with the cooked cabbage tasting like real home cooking. My friend got hush puppies and after sampling these I wish I had got them. The hush puppies are awesome. Make sure you get them if you go. All in all I enjoyed my visit, the food is good old home cooking, and the prices are great. Outside looks a little scary, but dont let it fool you. The food has more soul than soul train.. and brother.. thats a lot!! 5 stars.

I found hair in my food and the price was high for four strips of bacon and a lemonaderead more

I've passed by this mysterious yellow building so many times this past year and finally decided to…read moredrop by. The inside I have to say is a little dim, but the excellent hospitality I was greeted with totally counteracted that. They have a wide range of items on their menu at VERY awesome prices. You can get a combination plate which includes your main entree and two sides for $6-$8. They have your usual chopped BBQ, fried chicken, fried turkey, cubed steak and for those of you more adventurous ones out there - pigs feet! You have to get there early though. I was there at 12:30 PM and they were already out of chopped BBQ. Bad for those of us who come later in the day, but a good sign that their food is great. I ordered the fried chicken combination (you can pick from white or dark meat) with a side of candied yams and collard greens. I washed it down with a delicious, but outrageously sweet cup of lemonade. I literally had to cut the lemonade with a full cup of water, but it was good nonetheless. Then, you have the opposite end of the spectrum with the food being pretty heavily seasoned. I personally don't see this as a bad thing because I've been to a string of restaurants lately where the food was just way too bland. So this is just a warning for those of you who don't like your food too salty. The fried chicken was decent, but the yams and collard greens were the best I've had in a really long time. They also offer different desserts daily. They're open for breakfast, lunch and dinner M-F, but they're only open for breakfast and lunch on Saturdays. If you haven't tried this place before, please do. Both food AND service is great, which believe it or not, is a very rare combination these days.

My turkey melt was perfectly prepared and tasted great. My wife's pancakes and sides were very good as well. The coffee drinks were tasty and well prepared with that good deep espresso flare. Not wanting to overeat on a freshly purged system, we ordered a couple of cheesecakes to go. My wife's lemon ricotta, mine chocolate. Both very different, both very good. Probably the best home made tasting desserts we've had in our 2 yrs in the triangle. Will definitely return after the next trip to Duke med.

The space is charming inside and out; the shaded patio has a nice vibe, though foot traffic to the entrance passes by those tables. Ordering is walk-up, and food is delivered to the table. Menu is broad with clear gluten-free indicators (huge plus). Coffee was dark and delicious, and service throughout was genuinely warm, knowledgeable, and fast -- easily 5 stars for hospitality. Getting to-go boxes was effortless and we were offered refills often. Food was a mixed bag. My wife had the gluten-free smoked salmon toast with avocado. She wished the veggies and tomato were grilled; the GF bread itself was very good, but the greens/tomato ended up pushed aside. I had the smoked salmon Benedict. The salmon portion felt light, and the hollandaise leaned more toward mustard than citrus and was a bit thin. Breakfast potatoes and veggies were nicely cut and well-seasoned but undercooked; same for the bacon, which tasted more tough than crisp. (I reheated the potatoes/veg at home -- flavor was there once cooked through.) Prices felt reasonable, ingredients seemed thoughtfully sourced, and the team's earnestness shines. With a little tighter execution (fully cooked potatoes/veg, crisper bacon, brighter/thicker hollandaise, slightly more salmon, grilled tomatoes), this would be an easy 5. I'll definitely be back -- I gave it a 3.7 but rounded it up to 4 stars for the service, coffee, and GF-friendly menu options.
