But just go inside and see how very much there IS a bar inside. And what a bar it is. Live music almost every week, DJ's spinning real vinyl almost every week, the best value for money food served every night (from appr. 6-10 pm), a great crowd, very welcoming warm staff and an infamous omnipresent owner, Hayo. Kaffee 't hof consists of two rooms. In the principal room there are a bar, a large table for regulars, about five or six dining tables and a DJ set. In the other room, there is a stage and there are about ten more dining tables that make way whenever there's live music. The food is excellent and cheap. Expect to pay about € 9 for a dish of the day, tapas & snacks around € 5, mains from about € 9 - € 18. There are no desserts and usually, about a third of the menu is sold out. But hey, this is 't Hof. You'll be happy you stepped in anyway. Hayo puts a lot of effort in his beer list. He may not have a lot, but what he has is pretty good stuff. Quite a few belgian trappists, German Weizen, etc. 't Hof has a bohemian, underground feel to it. Brown nicotined walls dating from before the smoking ban, loads of statues of Christ & Mary, a pretty non-standard music selection (sometimes you only vaguely recognize things like Johnny Cash and Tom Waits). When the weather allows it, there's usually a pretty impressive crowd drinking outside. Officially that's not really allowed, but hey, this is 't Hof. What do you expect.

My Caprese sandwich was good. My friends had fish & chips and loved them. I snuck some fries (with mayo of course) and they were yummy. Our server was efficient and kind.

Middelburg's living room. Open 7 days a week from 11am to 2am. Laid back, indie bar for all ages…read moreduring the week. A bit louder, busier, younger, less indie and more dance and even some Dutch party music on friday and saturday nights. And one of the few places in town where sunday afternoons and sunday nights can actually be pretty good. Seventy-Seven (just call it 'Sev' if you want to blend in) is where Middelburgers learn to drink, fall in love, celebrate the birth of their children, come to to find old friends on christmas eve (even if they left the city decades ago), catch their elderly parents getting drunk and eventually catch their own kids having their first beers. One of the oldest bars in town: people have been drinking here on this spot since at least the 1780s. The original building was destroyed in a fire in the 1890s. The present-day building dates from around that time and survived Word War II. It's current decor is from around 1970 when the original De Koophandel (The Commerce) was renamed Seventy-Seven. Probably one of the ugliest and most worn out of all Middelburg bars, which adds to the charm. Other features: regular drum 'n bass nights, not so regular live music, huge terrace out front from april till october. The selection of beers (about 5 on draught, 10 on bottle) could be better. But the atmosphere is always good and you can get crisps, peanuts (free!) and all sorts of toasties around the clock.
