The waitress smiled shyly; she went to get boss Jac. The boss came, he heard we had a question. I asked if the waitress had said anything. He said, somewhat annoyed, "Yes, but I want to hear from you." I said that I thought it is strange that the wine was already uncorked on the table. Then, as if stung by a wasp, he was ignited in irascible anger: we always do that here, then you should have said in advance that you wanted an unopened bottle, nobody here has a catering training, you apparently do not belong to our target group, the old-fashioned term 'customer is king' does not apply here, we are not going to please you. I was stunned by so much overwhelming verbal aggression. I looked at my wife, 'shall we leave?', she nodded. We got up. Jac said boldly that we had to pay for the bottle of wine. I didn't want that and we walked away without paying. I hope to contribute to the 'success formula' of Mr. Jac by disclosing this negative unpleasant Mossels & Meer experience. Eaters who appreciate civilized restaurant manners should stay away, those who like to be insulted, go ahead. Hubertus Friederichs

Restaurant KAAP is a newcomer to the square but with historical roots in Rotterdam and France. Deli Restaurant Z&M is its bigger sister and certainly knows the ropes. And why France you ask?nBecause the owners took their inspiration from la Cale, a restaurant in Normandy which has declared itself the worst restaurant in the region or even in France at large. But really, La Cale is one of those perfect hide-outs. But hey, an 8 hour drive for some fish is a bit silly so we happily gorge on the menu in KAAP and pretend to have our feet in the sand. You can come here on a first date, a second or third even, why the hell not? What's not to like? Come here with colleagues, friends or your folks. It is one of those places that manages to be intimate and anonymous at the same time with an open kitchen and relaxed service. They offer a good wine list to wash away the feast and make sure your night is off to a good start, or finish.
