I live in California but I grew up in Iowa and Pro's is a great bastion of the classic tradition of "loose meat" sandwiches that I grew up with. When we come to Iowa every year around July 4th, this is always our first stop for lunch. They pack their sandwiches until they are overflowing. The meat is really tasty. Try the homemade pies and the root beer. This is Iowa food! As a footnote, Pro's started out many years ago as a Maid-Rite which is where the sandwich tradition began. There are a handful of former Maid-Rites around Iowa that shed the franchise but still sell the sandwich and have retained the mom and pop restaurant feel that used to be there back in the 60's. Modern Maid-Rites are a bit more fast food oriented and standardized. I still like Maid-Rites, they are my favorite for fast food in the Midwest, but I seek out the old school former franchises wherever I can find them. The only other one I know about is the Canteen in Ottumwa, but I would love to find more.
