A friend and I stopped here for a late lunch over the weekend. She got the patty melt and I ordered the classic cheeseburger. We both opted for a side salad, which ended up being lettuce with vinaigrette on it. My friend loved her patty melt, but my medium rare burger was so messy, between the drippings from the burger and the abundance of ketchup on it, that it was hard to eat. I must have gone through a dozen napkins. I do like a juicy burger, but this was undercooked in my opinion. I would try something else if I'm ever back in the area.

We went to Cabalar on a Saturday to try their special, which they were sadly already out of. Pivoted to the Mac Daddy burger instead- a great option! Plenty of seating, and we enjoyed some hot cider while we waited for our order to be ready. Food was ready much quicker than we were told the wait would be. The burger was outstanding, and definitely grab some homemade ranch for their fries.

I came in for the Reuben or the Cuban but they were all sold out when I got here. So I got the Bahn Mi. and of course the delicious fries. Staff is friendly as always, and I like the open seating. I got here after 1:30 so that's probably why they were all out of my choice. Next time.

Such a cute aesthetic with plenty of seating. Quick service. TALLOW FRIES. No disgusting seed oils here. Cheap upcharge for a good gluten free bun. Burgers coked perfectly and the toppings are *chefs kiss*. Will come back here anytime I visit Lancaster!!

Cabalar Meat is a very hip and trendy place to grab an amazing meal. I went with my family of 6. Seating is great- cafeteria style and they have additional seating upstairs. There is also a bar in the back and an outdoor patio. I had the Cuban and it was amazing. Portion size is very good too. Fries are delicious! Everything we got was very good! Love this place- we will be back!

Honestly thoroughly enjoyed this location. I had heard about it in passing and then my fiancé saw it online and really wanted to try it. The only negatives I have is there's no physical menu and you have to look on your phone and I could not get service - and also it took a long time. I don't mind waiting so it wasn't bad but like it was awhile. I think they allow you to order online ahead though which would probably help. You order at one counter and then pickup at the back of the shop. I think that is also where you order drinks. I love their branding and the display of merch in the meat bunker. The food was also really really good. I loved that the fries were cooked in beef tallow. I didn't get a stomach ache from eating this which was crazy. So it's gotta be good quality. I did however not really like their ranch. It just kind of tasted like a funny pickle dressing. I got the patty melt and the burger was so good the onions on it were melt in your mouth. I definitely will be going back when I'm in the area. I could only eat half so I had leftovers and they were just as good! Definitely a must stop but beware it does get very very busy! And they're only open Thurs-Sunday.

Top tier burgers and fries. They have so much more but I honestly have not gotten past the burgers and fries. My favorites are the bacon jam burger and the classic burger (BB pickles is a total subtle but significant game changer in the burger experience). Fries are cooked in beef tallow (insert chef's kiss). They have milkshakes, beer, and soda beverages. Soda is a local soda maker which I think is cool. Ordering is easy and there is plenty of room in the queque. Drawbacks to some folks is the wait time to get your food, but to me it's worth the wait. Other drawbacks...not much parking . Very spacious venue indoors there are two floors. Upstairs is an area for children to play which is family friendly. There is also outside seating. They have an easy online ordering system as well. For a local restaurant highly recommend!

Delayed review: visited Dec 14, 2024 Depression is a mfer and I have had an awful time trying to gather the energy to write my reviews. We stopped here after spending the day at the Yuletide rennfaire at Mount Hope. Renn-food is so expensive and we prefer to spend our money on drinks, so we were ready to devour some cheeseburgers. Calabar Meat does have a meat counter, but it's clear that they do most of their business selling burgers and other prepared foods. They also have a brewery, so there's that, too, if beer is your thing. It was really busy when we arrived. We placed our order at the counter by the door and took a seat and waited, and waited, and waited for our buzzer to light up. Of course it didn't go off until I went to the bathroom. We sat at the table closest to the door because it was the most accessible one, but the draft from the door did make it slightly uncomfortable. Jeremy had the Macdaddy (special Sauce, minus lettuce, Cheese, Pickles, Onions On A Seed bun) which he did not care for, claiming the mac sauce wasn't right. He's done a lot of research in order to make mac sauce at home so he can be choosy about when other restaurants make it properly. And some chicken wings - they only offer one flavor: hot sauce. Just average, boring wings. I got the Sweet Heat (jalapeño jam, spicy fresno aioli, crispy onions, cooper sharp). It was all right. I feel like for all the hype calabar talks about getting their meats and other ingredients from local farms, it could have been better. D got the Bahn mi, but it took her a while to eat it, which is not like her, so that's not a resounding thumbs up either. The onion rings were probably the biggest hit. Everyone at the table enjoyed those. It was fine. No one left hungry but I wish we had gone somewhere else.

Cabalar is a new favorite in Lancaster. Delicious food, great open space, and a (not so) hidden playground out back for the kids with long tables for the adults. Order at the front and pick up your food and drink along the side. Seating available outside, and upstairs, too.

Entering through the parking lot was a bit challenging, with no clear signs about where to order or sit. Only a mobile order and order pickup at the kitchen. There was no host, and the cafeteria-style seating--especially upstairs--was loud and crowded, with no elevator access. With no visible menus, we assumed ordering was done online and placed our order at 6:22 p.m., receiving a pickup time of 7:15 p.m. Only later did we realize orders were supposed to be placed at the front butcher counter, which one would assume is just for ordering meat, though signage walking in never indicated this. The long wait time and unclear process made the experience frustrating, and the food and milkshakes tasted only average. Overall, the visit was disappointing, --2 stars until service improves.

It is supposed to be $14.00 pulled pork mac n cheese.

When Taco Bell is too good for you. Cabalar's used to be amazing; that was back when they were on Queen St, now they are on Lemon St and the quality is horrendous. (See photo). The pulled pork mac n cheese is disgusting. It's more like cheese soup with oily bread crumbs on it. The quality of their menu has dropped a lot. Everything is greasy and low quality.

Our first time to Cabalar will most definitely not be our last!!! The restaurant is very open and organized, it's just a welcoming environment, the star of the show however is the handcrafted burgers and sandwiches they make, not to mention the fries fried in beef tallow, and you must try the sweet pickle mayo to dip them in, cabalar is just flat out an amazing dining experience!!

Don't be misled by the 'meat' in Cabalar's name (thinking it's a butcher shop ...Although they do carve and bone their own meat right here!). One of Lancaster's newer 'in' spots for lunch, it is not to be missed! I enjoyed the Pulled Pork sandwich and it was to die for! The slaw in the sandwich was a perfect addition, to what can be an ordinary sandwich, at any other restaurant. I'll be back to try breakfast. And, bring friends. Bring yours, too. read more

I've been raving about this place since I was there over two years ago. I was finally able to return this weekend and was not disappointed. I ordered the bbq bacon burger and it was great. The fries are great as well, as is the beer. Wish I lived closer so I could come here more often. read more

Had the best fried chicken sandwich here last weekend. The sandwich melted in my mouth and can't wait to go back again hopefully this weekend. Great little place with friendly staff and great having Voodoo brewing company in the same building 8/25 update. Came over the weekend and it was amazing as always. Best staff they are always so friendly and now the guy that runs the register knows my husbands name since we have been coming so often. Tried the fried pickles this trip and they were probably the best we have had and of course had 2 chicken sandwiches. read more

Way overhyped. Typical downtown hipster butcher...if there is such a thing. Rack of ribs needed to be he's ivy trimmed-lots of fat. Which left a clean rack without much meat on them. I wish I would have known before I paid 30 dollars for a rack of ribs. Chicken sandwich was ok. If it wasn't completely soaked in sauce, it would have been better. The bun it's served on can't hold up with that much sauce. Come on now. This is sandwich 101 stuff. The chicken itself was good quality though. Less sauce and a heartier bun, and we would be on to something. Maybe come up with some variation in sauces also. Just a thought. Anyway, most likely won't be a returning customer because of the ribs. read more

Great location. Awesome interior. Staff is very friendly. Voodoo beer is great. We have been here 3 times so far WOW the burger was pretty good but man was the fried chicken sandwich to die for. If you come you have to try it. Spicy chicken with a buffalo sauce and pickles on potato bread. I would go way out of my way for this sandwich. Took about 20 minutes to prepare the food which is a little long and we were the first ones to order food that day but everything is made fresh so it is to be expected. Will be back for that sandwich read more

I'm not typically a Pastrami kinda guy, but this is the best Reuben sandwich I've ever had. Great flavor combination and overall consistency of the sandwich was perfect. Everything I've had at this place has been unreal. One of the best sandwich stops in Lancaster fir sure. read more

Really good quality burger! Interesting spot on the 300 block of queen. More of a butcher shop, but they do serve food in a relaxed, non-formal setting. You order at the counter and there is no table service. Definitely high quality food! There is a brewery in the same space called Voodoo Brewing that you can grab a beer at as well, but that service is separate so be prepared for two separate checks. Overall, would return. read more

This lunch was like getting baptized by a burger; I was born again after this life changing experience. The sweet heat burger was one of the best burgers I've ever had; meat was perfectly cooked and juicy, onions were crispy, the aioli and jam combination provided an out of body experience. Fries were perfect and washed down with an ipa from mad chef. I'll be making the hour and a half drive back just for this burger. Wife got the house special and loved it and the kid crushed his kids grilled cheese too. What a spot. What a time to be alive read more

Favorite local spot for a burger. They offer carry out and dine-in and a local brewery has beer available in house (and crowlers to go). Their food is consistently great- burgers and fries, especially, but everything is good. Service is friendly and quick. A definite must if you're in the area. read more

This is only the second time eating at Cabalar Meat and each time has been great. The pulled pork was very good. The pork Banh Mi had crispy meat and great flavor. This place is a must try. I will be back to try another meal.... Crispy chicken, a burger, etc. read more

This place is a burger joint.... period. But they make some great burgers! I love the salad that goes with the burger as well. I have tried several different burgers and they are all delicious. The burger was juicy, messy and full of flavor. The condiments were first class. What else is there to say about this place. Great burgers at a great price. Will be going back soon. read more

Stopped by after seeing several glowing reviews and was not disappointed. Simple menu with just a few choices made to order with exceptional ingredients. I can't say enough good things about the food here. Steve the owner puts so much care and thought into the menu. Nothing is ordinary, everything is exceptional. I find myself more and more impressed each time I leave here. I've been trying hard to work my way through the menu but during my once or twice a week visits I find myself craving something I've already had. While reviewing each menu item I love would take quite a bit of time I'll just say that this is probably the premier spot in Lancaster for a relatively quick gourmet lunch/dinner, and while I don't drink I know a lot of people are happy to have Voodoo brewing in house read more

I can safely say this place makes the absolute best burger I've ever eaten in my life. The house special burger is the perfect combo of flavors that hits the spot every time. I've been coming to cabalar regularly since it opened, and it is by far the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had in my entire life. It is our usual stop after walking through Market downtown. The side salad that comes with most sandwiches is also incredible. The onions on the sandwich are to die for. My boyfriend gets the dry aged burger every time and can't say enough great things about it. They also have soft drinks and beer on tap. This place deserves 10 stars. Great service, great food, great atmosphere, and awesome food. read more

Excellent quality in everything they have, my favorite is the spicy chicken sandwich and the banh mi. I can't stress how well prepared the food is and while it's not the fastest thing it's definitely worth it. Also it's very consistent. Great option for a quick bite to eat without the full sit down restaurant time frame. read more

Very unique top quality sandwiches. Some of their specials are so good that I wish they weren't specials. There is also a Mad Chef bar for getting beer; in addition you can buy high quality meats. Has a nice industrial rustic look inside with good service. read more

This place is awesome to grab a bite to eat. Met the owner Steve who was friendly and welcoming. Nicely decorated with a selection of organic and local diary products and produce as well as a nice selection of bottled teas and other drinks. I had the cheeseburger today and it was delicious. One of those than besides what the restaurant puts on it, you don't need to add anything else. The cheese, bread, and other toppings were perfect. Highly recommend stopping by to try the food. read more

New cool little spot for eats and meats. Visually everything looks clean and simple. Fits right into the kepel. I had a breakfast sandwich and it was dope. Not too much room for customization. If I had a choice it would be the option to add bacon to some of the menu options. For food pricing was comparable to the "trendy" eateries downtown, but for the meats pricing seemed high. Regardless check them out. read more

It took a few minutes to find the door to enter but once inside I was greeted and I asked for a lunch menu which was only a board at the counter. I decided on the Reuben sandwich and looked around the store while it was prepared. The store was nice but a little pricey for my taste. I got the sandwich to go and ate it at home. I thought it was just ok, it had a smoked taste that overpowered it. I wish them success but I won't be returning. read more

Goes without saying that the meat here is the best around. Extremely thoughtful butcher who is informative and knowledgeable. But don't forget the sandwiches, which are very very very good in their own right. Their Monte Cristo is one of the best I've ever had, certainly the best in Lancaster. read more

It was impressive that they rarely needed a price check on anything. They use scanners now and even have self-checkout, so everything's up to date in Millersville. Besides being a full-service grocer, Herr's offers a nice salad bar and eight soups every day, along with the usual fried/roasted chicken and other fried treats, along with sandwiches, for lunch. I'm a sucker for those Amish baked lima beans -- not the healthiest version of lima beans, but a local treat. Most local residents would point to Herr's meat counter as a strong point. They still cut and sell meat like the real butcher shop of the old days, and the people behind the counter seem pretty knowledgeable if you have a question. Very clean, good location and plenty of comfortable, outdoor seating. However the prepared foods are really lacking, especially compared to other Whole Foods. No sandwiches at all and sad pizza. However the Greek-style and salad bars are excellent and a decent value. Again, with a caveat: they use sunflower instead of olive oil. Why?? They have their own brand of excellent olive oil, why wouldn't they use that on their dolmas? Such a weird decision. It's not like you need the prepared foods to be shelf stable. Of course it tastes just like sunflower oil instead of olive oil. Sad. Otherwise the dolmas are really good, not dry or rubbery like they can be. Changing out the oil brought the flavor up from a 4 to a 7. The place is pretty small, maybe half the size of a typical grocery store. The alcohol section is tiny and picked through, The freshest breads sold out. Even saw a guy buy out their entire stock of 3 12-packs of farmhouse ale. If the place was bigger then they could have the foot traffic to offer more prepared foods and a larger stock. There's really no deli section, butcher or seafood section. They got rid of their house brand cold press juices which were excellent and priced well compared to the competition. The actual whole foods (cereals and beans) was not stocked for the most desirable stuff like black rice. Maybe 20% out of stock and the other 10% was clearly not stocked in a very long time. They did have buckwheat groats at $5.50/lb though which is fantastic. I think the Greek food and salad bar is the only redeeming quality because it's a good price and was fresh and stocked. Just be sure to poor off the oil and add your own olive oil and it tastes much better that way. If you're careful and observant you can find some good deals and rare products not stocked anywhere else.

To start, I dont write reviews for average places, and this is far from average. This was the first time i ate here and all i can say is Wow. when we first walked in it had the ambience of a family friendly lunch room, with room to spread out. it was crowded and we had to look for seats, but it also was not squished. they have an upstairs too that i would have liked to enjoy, but it was full. Perhaps, i will take my family back and go upstairs. The food was outstanding. i had a burger and poutine. dont ask me if the pohtine was authentic, im uncultured in what it should be like but digress. both of these items were exceptional. like i said, not average. then there were the adult beverages. ill tell you what.. ive tried a few things at a few places, but this takes the cake. i got 2 items, "the west wnd whiskey" and "the midnight oil" the first being similar to a old fashioned and the latter- an espresso mixed drink. Just try them. Outstanding. My last positive remark is the price. You get more than what you pay for in terms of quality. It is well priced and affordable for the family. Now, the reason i gave it 4 stars and not 5 is the wait. They were up front and disclosed the long wait before we ordered, asking if it was alright. This i commend, im fine waiting long as long as its disclosed. But it was also packed, so who can blame them. Lastly, the service was great, all the staff was extremely friendly and personable. Their advertised tallow French fries disappointingly turn out to be cut with vegetable oil, a fact revealed only upon inquiry. Additionally, spotting large containers of soybean oil stored on the floor raises concerns about the quality and authenticity of their offerings.
