(Consider it a rite of passage.) I was visiting New Bern and made an appointment for a cut & shave. What I got was an excellent haircut and my first straight razor shave. The proprietor, Claude Foy III, is first and foremost a gentleman, and second, he is a master barber who takes great pride in his profession. Passing through New Bern, two of us made appointments for haircuts at the same time -- one was done by the owner, the other by a very accomplished associate. They both assessed our previous haircuts (it had been a while) and suggested the kinds of cut that would look good on each of us. They worked meticulously for about an hour, which passed quickly and enjoyably. As we left, we not only looked a lot better, but felt better too. My haircut still looked fine a month later, but it was definitely time for a trim so I went to my regular barber at home (who is very good). Well, this is now my new favorite place. Mr. Foy is the height of professionalism and this is NOT a place to get a haircut, this is an experience that just re-adjusts what it means to have your hair taken care of. First off, Samantha is a very professional attendant and makes you feel welcomed the minute you walk through the door. There is an air of a refined men's private lounge that exudes quality, pride of ownership and professional attire. Mr. Foy explains the process (newbie here) and asks questions about your desired cut and then analyzes your head and current look. While I felt a little inadequate about discussing what I wanted, he was formulating his attack plan. The cut was great and then on to the piece de resistance, the straight razor close shave. As a first timer, I did not want to lose my Adam's apple, so I followed directions and presto; the closest & best shave I have ever had. Take a seat in the plush waiting area and you'll feel transported to the barber shops of old. Neither barber rushes at your hair with scissors. Instead they take time, establish rapport, and look, touch, and feel your hair to get a better understanding of their canvas. The barbers here are deeply interested in your satisfaction and won't let you out of the chair until they are certain that everyone, including their discerning eyes, is satisfied. You will not see a stray hair poking out at the end of the day. The experience is rounded out with a scalp, neck, and shoulder massage and a brushing down for loose hairs. This whole premise will set you back more than other stylists, but I promise this is an exponentially better haircut than you will receive from any discount wholesale hair cutter. The service here was unlike any other. You could tell that they took cutting hair as a craft. Made sure to get exacrly what i wanted and provided suggestions along the way. Overall i received a great haircut. Only reason for 3 stars is it was way more expensive then I was expectinf. Was figuring to be same general haircut price 20-30, but once i was done i was told it would be $55, not including tip. While it was a fine haircut, just too much in my opinion. They should advertise their prices somewhere within the shop. read more
