My mother and daughter (8) and I went on the 90 min ride together. My mom was the only experienced rider. The staff did a great job of making us feel comfortable on our horses. They picked out horses specially for each of us based on our size and riding experience. Zoe and Matt were our guides and they were great about making the ride enjoyable for us. Riding on the beach was wonderful!! My only negative comments were that probably 2/3 of our ride time was spent getting to and from the beach. We only spent about 20 min on the beach. That was disappointing to all of us. The other negative was that a lot of the staff was smoking cigarettes around the stables while the horses were being gathered for each if us. I didn't like that especially because I had my daughter with us. It was definitely an experience that I am happy we had. read more

My family and I have been on more than 5 horse back rides in many states. C & M stables was the prettiest with green terrain, sand and beach. The four female guides were great and horses were well trained. Loved this place! Had a memorable ride with a big group on the morning of the bride's wedding day. The beach ride was a true delight and I'll never forget it. Staff was helpful and friendly. We opted to go to Florence as a bit of a graduation celebration for my daughter earning her bachelor's degree. We ate lunch and I decided to book some riding time as our kids had never had the experience before. The cost, I guess was standard; $60 per person. The staff knowledgeable, and the horses friendly. We took the dunes ride, and it was beautiful moving through the wood line and breaking out onto the dunes. The experience rated 5 stars, but sadly, the horses were well-ridden. By this I mean that they simply didn't need a rider in control. The horses know instinctively where to go, and actually seem to dislike attempts to correct what they already have mapped out for themselves, and rarely took commands. I felt that at least one of the staff, I will leave out the name, could have been a bit more congenial as her behavior came across as indignant and condescending at times. If you are a new rider, simply being on horseback in this beautiful area is worth the money, but for more experienced riders simply sitting on a horse that takes you on a walk, just didn't do much for me. Random stop with a buddy. Rode horses for 2 hours -$95 and tipped $20. So not bad considering we saw ATV for $60 a hour. We got a horse ride on the beach for less!!! Amazing time going through the forest and ending up on the beach. We wish the horses went faster. Mine just did a little trot on the way back. His name was yahzi... anyways had a great time and our instructor kelly was super cool. Everyone that worked there was very nice and warm. Great customer service! I can't say my experience was as bad as Quinn M's, but there were some problems. There are a fair amount of dogs around the property. While one of them is older and fairly nice, the little wiener dog is a yapper and bites customers and the bull dog stirs up the horses. With 10 young girls who mostly haven't ever rode a horse, this can be a fairly scary thing to see since the dog is allowed to run around in the horse pins. The girls are matched to horses based on size and experience. Sometimes the horses get days off to rest so the girls won't always have the same horse, other times it changes, but they're all the same horse except for the bigger horses who are temperamental. My co-worker had a horse name Kansas who didn't like they're riders wearing packs of any sort or else he would buck, so I wore the health/safety kit. My horse, Tennessee, was moody and didn't like to follow, but he was placed at the back of the line where he bit the horses in front of him and didn't like to be controlled at all by me. After the line up had been determined, one of the females hosts got on her horse who was obviously very aggrssive. He began bucking in the coral where all the girls were and stirred up all the horses. My co-worker and I were standing side by side on our horses and almost got off to get all the girls off their horses and call it quits, but they assured us that the horse (Turbo) was just aggressive and they were working on training him still and not to be worried. I never experience the guides talking on their phones, but we only had one friendly guide by the name of Ryan who was a little annoying but fairly friendly. The owner was older and grumpy so I chose to stay limited with him ad just have an in-and-out kind of experience. The guides expected the girls to be in full control of their horses (no grass eating, standing in the stirrups when they needed to use the bathroom, no passing of other people's horses, stopping and leading them despite obstinance) by the end of the week in order to have a beach tour, which was extremely short and the horses never stayed put and didn't really trot of gallop. I think the girls had fun because experiencing new things is always a thrill, but the place is a little... unprofessional if you ask me. read more

I made it very clear that I was a beginner. They put me on a horse that obviously did not want to go anywhere. When we got to the beach, this horse wanted to turn around and was getting agitated with other horses. He took off in a full sprint with me on his back. Kinda scary when you've never ridden before. If you get Pippen, good luck! They also had me put my phone in a dirty case that I wore around my neck. Made all my photos blurry. Thanks for nothing. read more

We traveled to the stables on a road trip along the coast this past May. We had chosen the 2 hour beach ride and had a great time. The trip was as described and although you do not spend 2 hours on the beach we found the route to the beach to be very beautiful itself. The staff was very informative and did their best to be accomodating to all skill levels; which there were many. They did very well keeping tabs on all of us it was a good sized group, so they had their work cut out. We appreciated the level of concern for the well being of the horses. The guides had a good sense of humor and we enjoyed them very much. Most of the previous reviews are pretty old, but I encourage anyone considering taking a trip with C & M Stables to not let them discourage you. Keep in mind it is an organized trail ride - of course the horses will follow each other and you cannot expect them to let everyone just take off on their own. Our ride was a birthday present for me. Both my husband and I owned horses at one time. My husband hadn't ridden for almost 20 years and it was close to a year for me. I was soooo happy to be able to do this ride and my husband was going along for grins. We ended up having such a great great time!! Our horses weren't crazy, they weren't fast, but, they weren't crazy. We had a nice easy ride, which was fine with the both of us 'cause we didn't know the horses. We had a beautiful ride to the beach and once there had an even more beautiful time. Sun and no wind!! And, we had the beach to ourselves!! What a day! Our guides, Arianne and Leah (sorry if I messed up the spelling!) were very professional and knowledgeable, with safety being the most important factor. After owning our own horses for years, we learned even more about horses from our guides. Our horses, Float and Samson, were sweet but with cute attitudes!! Oh yea, we are coming back!! If you would like to have an unpleasant ride on the beach for about 30 minutes, while riding sick animals and being yelled at by the guides, this is the place for you! This is by far the worst service I've ever experienced. The horses seemed to be in very poor health. I noticed one had a opening sores under its tail. None of the animals were wearing horseshoes to protect their hooves. At several points during the ride, my partner and I were left behind. It seemed as though we were riding the unruly horses and the main guide was in no way willing to help. We were constantly yelled at for no reason. If they weren't yelling at everyone, they were ignoring everyone. Needless to say I did not feel safe at all. The website states that you have an hour long ride once you get to the beach, we did not ride anywhere near that long. Perhaps 30 minutes total. Most of the time was stopping while they shouted out more rules or at the stable while they again, yelled even more. I have been horse back riding in almost every state in the US, however I have never been to such a place. The customer service was absolutely horrid, but mainly the animals should be properly cared for! read more

I've been here 3 times in the last 5 years, all three times have been an amazing experience. the guides are helpful and very nice. the facility is clean and seem to take care of the horses really well, which is big in my book. the horses may be stubborn at times but they'll take care of you, lol they just want to get back to the barn. I dragged him along (you have to have at least 2 people in your group) and he loved it! It was a gorgeous day, a little windy but we are on the Oregon coast. The horses were well trained, the guides were very friendly and informative. I felt safe and got a beautiful view of the beach! I understand that most people that give these reviews are given from a beginners perspective and from an advanced riders perspective, these guys are very professional and handled things very well. The only reason the guides kept a 'slow' or sluggish pace, is so the horses can follow each other and beginners don't have to worry about trotting. The trails to the beach can be very difficult with horses constantly trying to eat thorn bushes or foxglove. That's why the guides tell you to stop the horse from eating. Talking on their cell phones ensures that the group is safe and secure HOWEVER the guides, while I went on my ride to the beach, really engaged in conversation with our group and cared about how our days were, if we were having fun, and what he could do to better our day. When we got to the beach, I found my horse very cooperative to trot and was very enthused with his enthusiasm to go into the water. The reason people couldn't trot for more than ten seconds was probably from the fact that the horses had been going all day and were probably very tired. TL;DR If you know how to handle a horse, you should have a very fun time; however, beginners that have never been on a horse probably won't have as much fun because they don't know how to make a horse trot and wont know how to react in situations where a horse is uncooperative. read more

This place is great! We did a 1.5 hour beach ride and it was the perfect amount of time. I haven't ridden since I was 12, and my 15yo had never ridden. They made us feel safe and comfortable, and made it a great ride. Really nice people from the check in to the guides. The trail to the beach is beautiful and the beach is cool (both literally and figuratively, we went in August and it was CHILLY, so wear long sleeves regardless of time of year). I also recommend sunglasses, the sand was blowing hard. They also took time on the beach to take pictures of you (or group) if you wanted, way cool. The horses were great, pretty chill and knew what they were doing. They let you trot on the beach if you want, that's fun for a bit, then it catches up with your backside ;) I kind of don't get these reviews that say there wasn't enough time on the beach, it was plenty (about 25 minutes), and the rest of it was fun as well, they sound whiny. So I decided to make this my great adventure during my trip and signed up for a 2 hour beach ride (never ridden before). The staff was great, from reserving the ride, checking in, horse setup and during the ride. It was about a 30 minute trail ride to the beach, about an hour on the beach (walking and trotting) and then returned to the trail to get back. The guides checked on us throughout the ride to make sure everything was going well. I would absolutely do this again, it was a fantastic experience!! read more

Certain members of the staff were really rude!!! After being told the whole time to kick the horse if they stopped, I got yelled at for kicking the horse when he stopped for a long period of time, without knowing that the horse was "going to the bathroom". I was totally insulted. This woman should not be interacting with customers, regardless of her skill level. I would never hurt an animal. The staff does not try to be welcoming or treat the customers with dignity. For $180, I came away from the experience feeling humiliated. If I treated my customers this way, I would be out of business. read more

My review is around their boarding facility. In reading the negative reviews about riding, it caused me to pause, but the reality is: they provide a great facility and environment. Jeff, the manager, was very helpful and patient as I was arranging the move of my horse. There aren't many options out here, but I felt my horse would have been safe and happy. Being from the Midwest, this experience was phenomenal. We took the 2 HR beach ride. The horses wind their way through a wooded area before entering and climbing the dunes. My experience was much more favorable than that of reviewers from past years. Early this past summer I took my granddaughter to C & M Stables on the Oregon coast as a pre-birthday present. Arriving in the afternoon, we both went on a beach ride. My granddaughter so enjoyed horseback riding that we stayed overnight, wandered the harbor shops in Florence, tried a seafood dinner and then returned the next day for my granddaughter to take a trail ride - without me. This adventure was such a success that we repeated the visit just before school started. Although my granddaughter lives near Portland, staying overnight in Florence makes for an easy weekend trip. We take the freeway down and the coast road back, with no shortage of ocean related things to see and do. Grandpa found a winner. Next summer, I predict a horse ranch birthday party. read more

I'm not a big fan of trail rides, but decided that this time on our trip to the coast I would do a trail ride on the beach. We made reservations a couple of days prior to the ride. Person taking our reservation wasn't overly friendly. Was probably the same person that checked us in on the day of our arrival....not real big on customer service. Seriously people when tourists are your bread and butter....show a little enthusiasm. We were told to meet by the corrals, where after about 20 minutes we were assigned our horses based on our riding experience. I have experience riding and feel that the horse I had was a good choice. Matt and Zoey were our guides. I thought they did a good job. I didn't enjoy the long ride to get to the beach....single file is pretty boring. Once we got to the beach it was fun to trot and break away a bit from the group. Only downfall is that we only got to spend about 15 minutes at the beach....not long enough for the $70.00 a person you pay for the beach ride. We didn't bring our cameras but Zoey was gracious enough to take our picture for us using her phone and send it to us. That was super nice of her. Upon leaving we wanted to leave a tip, but wasn't sure if they had a tip jar or what so we stopped in the office and there was an older gentleman in there who just pretty much ignored us. I finally asked if we could leave a tip somewhere and he said "it says to leave it with your guide" Not sure where it says that but okay.....again work on the customer service people. read more
