It's a bit of a haul to pick it up but the local places get their schedules filled and can't hands our order. The first year, when we drove out to Lebanon in October, it was nearly 100 degrees out there and our beef was almost thawed by the time we got it back to the coast (even though it was in coolers and frozen when we picked it up). Part of the reason is that they wheeled the meat out to the lobby and in boxes. We used the dolly to take one box at a time out to the car but couldn't fit it in that way and had to open the boxes and load it into coolers. It took a while and no one offered to help us. In future years, we took a truck so we didn't have to open the boxes. More expense in gas but worth it. They do a nice job wrapping the meat, everything is clean and clearly labeled and the order is custom. They call and ask how you want everything. One annoying thing is that they don't seem to keep this information on file so we have to go through it again every year. Good thing we keep notes! The hamburger comes in two-pound tubes which are really convenient, especially for company. It makes plenty for a party of four to six. But you can also get it in one-pound tubes. Same with steaks. We get them in packages of two but you can get four per as well. The do a great job with the trimming, the meat is really beautiful. If you request to receive the organ meats, bones or fat, however, you have to really make sure they've given it to you. They'll either forget to include it, give you something else, or give you a partial order. After driving home an hour and a half, it's pretty annoying to realize you didn't get it all. Like most meat processors, they also make sausage and have a good selection at the shop. We didn't try any but I would guess that they're good.

It's my sister's favorite butcher shop though, and when I'm going to make a pot roast I want to use the best meat, so we stopped by here. It was larger and more spacious than a lot of butchers which I appreciated--often they're super crowded. The area where you enter has a nice selection of cheese and wines as well as some other foods. The staff was friendly and helpful. ETA: Today when I started to make my pot roast, imagine my surprise when I found that I had two chuck steaks... not really super conducive to pot roast, and a little annoying since I asked for chuck roast. I've been to other butchers and asked for chuck roast and never been given bone-in chuck steak. This isn't something I could use because it wouldn't fit into the pot and I couldn't cut it with the bone in, so I had to go buy another $40 of meat at Albertson's. Not sure that I'll be returning to Long's. Hope my sister can use the meat so it won't be a total waste of the $30 I spent here.

We have stopped in a couple of times, and the service and especially the meats are excellent. The owner clearly enjoys interacting with customers, and is a pleasure to do business with. From our initial contact on the phone to the pick-up of the meat, Jason and his crew do a fantastic job! They take time to carefully explain all the choices a novice meat customer has with the intricacies of butchering. They also adhere to their quoted timelines. The wrapping of the meat is high-quality (other butchers have made unwrapping the meat next to impossible because tissue-like paper sticks to the frozen meats). Their staff is very friendly and helpful at the pick-up also! We ordered teriyaki-flavored pepperoni sticks & they tasted amazing- fresh and flavorful! We look forward to more purchases from Mountain Valley Meats & highly recommend them.

It is abundantly clear the owner loves his business and will talk to you about basically anything, give tips, helpful recipes, and so much more. I'm a food blogger and so I love talking about recipes with him, but he is great with food styling too, and makes sure if I'm using whatever meat for a blog recipe that it's absolutely perfect. All I have to do is ask, and it's done. They run weekly specials, and it's always a great way to stock the freezer. The specials rotate too, so it is different each week. We also really love the ribeye steaks, which are perfect for a stay home date night meal. They also make food there like sandwiches and other things. Which I often forget, but the owner can absolutely cook. His baked beans are a favorite of mine, and I generally hate beans, which says something to me. Would I return? Absolutely. This is easily one of my favorite small local businesses to get behind and support. The customer service and product are always on point. I stopped in for a quick lunch based on the recommendation of fellow Yelper Mark M., and I couldn't be more appreciative of his advice! The cook was super friendly and we chatted up a storm while he prepared my turkey club with bacon and avocado. He grilled the turkey, which came as a surprise to me... but I loved it! They don't have indoor dining at the moment, so I took my lunch to a nearby park and had an amazing time. If you find yourself in Springfield or Eugene, stop by Benedetti's for a little nostalgia and a full and happy belly!
