Unfortunately, the girl who 'helped' me wasn't so great. Appeared to have no personality while lacking the more important thing (service). Basically repeating what I was asking about, no selling skills whatsoever. There were a couple other employees working, but this was the one who approached me so it was all downhill from here. Might have been a better time had it been one of them. Left empty handed and ended up at The Grove anyway where the experience was much better-

I came to this Sephora location after work because I needed a new foundation and wanted help…read morefinding a shade that matched my skin tone. Unfortunately, part of my experience left me feeling extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome. I understand that this is Beverly Hills and I may not have walked in looking glamorous or "high-end." I had just gotten off work and simply came in to purchase what I needed. But regardless of how someone is dressed, looks, or presents themselves, every customer deserves to be acknowledged and treated with basic respect. I had an especially disappointing interaction with an employee named Cami. I was standing directly in front of her and asked for her opinion on two foundation shades I was testing--one on each side--and which one looked better on me. She completely ignored me. She did not acknowledge me or even look at me, despite the fact that I was clearly speaking directly to her. Thankfully, another employee noticed what was happening and immediately stepped in to help me. I unfortunately did not get her name, but I genuinely appreciate her kindness and willingness to help. I also want to give a HUGE thank-you to Natalia. She was an absolute sweetheart. She was kind, welcoming, helpful, and had such a great personality. She made me feel comfortable and helped turn an unpleasant experience into a much better one. If you come to this location and need assistance, I highly recommend looking for Natalia. She treated me exactly how a customer should be treated. I also want to recognize the gentleman representing Dior who was working in the store today. I believe he mentioned it was his first day. He had black curly hair, and unfortunately I cannot remember his name, but he was incredibly kind, professional, and helpful as well. Thank you for treating me with respect and helping me. As for Cami, I really hope she reflects on how she treats customers. Working at a high-end location does not make anyone better than the people who walk through the door. You never know someone's background, what kind of day they've had, or how much money they have based on their clothes or appearance. Ignoring someone who is standing directly in front of you asking for help is rude and unnecessary. Everybody is different. Everybody is unique. And everybody deserves to be treated with respect. Thank you again to Natalia, the Dior representative, and the other employee who stepped in to help me. You three showed exactly what good customer service should look like. Unfortunately, Cami showed me the complete opposite.

A growing craze (and I am definitely on board for it) is the rise of niche perfumes. Niche can mean…read morefrom a single compounder working in her garage to a large and venerated house with a long European pedigree. I would put PdM in the latter category. Niche fragrances are distinguished nowadays from designers (YSL, Dior, Chanel, etc.) and they tend to emphasize natural oils and a range of categories from gourmand or food-like to smoky and leathery. Not just for women any longer, everyone can wear just about anything as it will mingle with individual chemistry and create something signature and personal to each wearer. I have been getting up to speed on some really excellent scents for about the past year. One of my discoveries (through Sebastian Jara, The Perfume Guy) was Oajan from Parfums de Marly. Oajan is a velvety Oriental with a complex compound of flavors including Cinnamon, Honey and Osmanthus; Benzoin, Ambergris, Labdanum and Artemisia; and Vanila, Tonka Bean, Patchouli and Musk. Its delicious, sophisticated and exotic. Imagine my happiness when I noted that Parfums is right across from one of my favorite restaurants (see my Bacari, BH review from last month). Since PdM perfumes are pricey, getting a chance to smell them (or 'get my nose on them' as the fragrance cognoscenti say) before plunking down some Georges is a definite must. Parfums de Marly, BH is open on Sundays (bonus!). It is a sleek, cool, modern boutique where you might expect to see models emerge in Carolina or Oscar, but no, just it's exquisitely crafted perfumes in classic OG bottles are featured. See my photos (taken discreetly and perhaps not rising to great photographic standards as a result). Myra was our customer assistant and she was as smooth as glass. I showed her my short list to sample on blotters and she immediately handed me elegant square ragcloth cards on which to smell each one. Then she offered me a sample of each save, unfortunately, the one I truly liked best, Herod. Still, I now have Safanad, Godolphin, Delina, and Althair to try out over the next week or two, since we will be back in BH later this month. Presumably, then I can try Herod or purchase one of the others. Myra explained the scent profile of each one so I could better understand what category it falls into, liking gourmands, spices, smoky, and orientals best, personally. If you have a chance to stop in this particular (or any) PdM store, it is a delightful way to round out a day dining, people watching, and shopping. Ask for Myra on Sundays, to get the royal treatment yourselves.
